Destiny's Child will not reunite, says Beyoncé's dad

destinys-childBeyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams’ last album together was called Destiny Fulfilled for a reason: Destiny’s Child is never making another album or performing together again. If you don’t believe me, trust Mathew Knowles, proud father of pop diva Beyoncé and former manager of the most successful girl group ever. Refuting reports from the rumor mill, Knowles says the trio is not getting back together, now or ever.

“Contrary to rumors online of a Destiny’s Child reunion, there are no plans for the group to reunite for a performance or album,” Knowles states in a press release issued today. “The rumors are false. Destiny’s Child made an unprecedented impact in contemporary music, becoming one of the best-selling groups of all time. Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams have each moved on to successful solo careers. The members remain close, but will not reunite as a group.”

Since their 2004 breakup, each of the three members has released her own solo efforts. Beyoncé, easily the group’s most successful alum, has three multi-platinum sets under her belt, while Rowland and Williams both have dropped two critically acclaimed albums.

Are you sad Destiny’s Child isn’t reuniting? Did you ever hope they were? Let us know.

We Are the Fallen covers U2

we-are-the-fallenTwo years after her controversial American Idol run, Carly Smithson is still looking for her big break. She recently joined with several former members of Evanescence to form We Are the Fallen, a pop-metal band that sounds like…well, like Evanescence with Carly Smithson subbed in for Amy Lee. Personally, I wasn’t hugely wowed by We Are the Fallen’s debut, which hit the charts last month at a middling No. 33. All that said, they’ve just recorded a U2 cover for Billboard.com — and it’s actually kind of good!

The metalheads broke with type to take on “With or Without You” in an acoustic format. Smart move: Without all that gnashing guitar sludge on top, Smithson’s vocals get to shine. “With or Without You” is well suited to any singer with Smithson’s dramatic instincts. I didn’t really expect to for the reasons mentioned above, but I’m digging this.

Check out We Are the Fallen’s “With or Without You” cover over at Billboard and let us know how you like it.

Eminem learns to fly in his 'Not Afraid' video: Watch it here

Eminem’s music videos come in two basic flavors: silly or serious. His new clip for “Not Afraid,” the first single from June 22′s Recovery, is definitely the latter, and it’s full of call-backs to previous entries in this section of his video canon. The first half of the video cuts back and forth between a windy rooftop (shades of “The Way I Am”) and a grimy 8 Mile-style basement. Eminem paces and gesticulates, as we’ve seen him do so many times before. We are to understand that he is once again at wit’s end with the world, full of barely contained energy that he’s not yet sure how to direct.

Eventually Eminem begins walking the streets, where he finds a creepy hall of mirrors and, later, a gaping crater in the asphalt. (Preserved amid the wreckage is a billboard for Beats by Dre headphones. Nice product placement.) He stops walking. This is where he is needed. He dives into the hole, again recalling “The Way I Am.” He begins to fly. The streets fill with light as he rushes by. The music swells. Super-Eminem will save us all from ourselves with his motivational rhymes!

Is this Eminem’s greatest video? Probably not, but it does do a great job of matching the redemptive vibe of “Not Afraid.” Check out the clip after the jump (some NSFW language) and let us know what you think.

Gorillaz creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett on the cartoon band's past, present, and future: The Music Mix Q&A

gorillazImage Credit: Astrid Stawiarz/Getty ImagesNot many musicians can hang with the likes of Harry Potter, Homer Simpson, and Carrie Bradshaw. But when EW assembled its list of the 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years for the cover story now on stands, we had to include Gorillaz, the fictional cartoon quartet that’s fronted three real albums (2001′s Gorillaz, 2005′s Demon Days, and this spring’s Plastic Beach, all stellar). I spoke with Gorillaz’ human creators — Tank Girl visual artist Jamie Hewlett and Blur singer Damon Albarn (pictured, seated left to right) — about the project’s past, present and future. Read on after the jump for our full Q&A.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: A good place to start might be the late ’90s, when you first hit on the idea of making a cartoon band. What was the initial spark for that?
JAMIE HEWLETT:
We shared a flat in London, and I think we were just sitting watching MTV. We felt that you had to wait a long time before anything decent came along. There would be the odd Spike Jonze video or Hype Williams, and then the rest would be pretty bad. So we had the very simple idea: Let’s do an animated band. There was no great formula or great plan. We started messing around for about six months. I was doing designs, Damon was doing demos. It sort of grew from that. And it’s still growing now, 10 years later. It’s a project that is growing larger all the time. For me, definitely I don’t feel it’s complete. I don’t know about Damon’s thoughts on that. But I think it’s something that can continue to grow until it reaches a point where we can’t really go any further with it. We haven’t reached that point yet. I don’t know if we will. Snoop Dogg, Daft Punk, and Noel Gallagher invade the Star Wars cantina: Watch the hilarious ad here

So Snoop Dogg, the Daft Punk robots, and Noel Gallagher from Oasis walk into a bar — wait, sorry. I’m telling this joke wrong. Let me try again: Snoop Dogg, Daft Punk, and Noel Gallagher walk into the Star Wars cantina. Laughing yet?

Okay, maybe this would work better if you just watch the World Cup-related Adidas ad I’m talking about. It features the aforementioned musical celebrities, plus David Beckham, Jay Baruchel, Ian Brown from the Stone Roses, Ciara, and others, all quite deftly integrated into the classic Mos Eisley cantina scene from Star Wars. It is hilarious. Snoop, in particular, steals the show.

What are you waiting for? Hit the jump and click play, then let us know which star you think is funniest in this ad. Answers other than “Snoop Dogg” will be accepted, but only with detailed justifications.

4 reasons why you can't miss VH1's Dirty South Hip Hop Honors

bow-wow-dupriImage Credit: Theo Wargo/WireImage.comLast night (June 3) at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom VH1 paid its annual homage to hip-hop, VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South. The “Dirty South” part is new. For the first time, VH1 chose to pay its respects to a specific region—an effort that a few Southern legends found disrespectful. Wondering why VH1 couldn’t simply incorporate more Southern acts into their regular Hip Hop Honors celebrations, Suave House Records founder Tony Draper and veteran Houston rapper Scarface both declined on opportunities to be involved. But the show went on. And aside from a couple of technical difficulties Uncle Luke and his 2 Live Crew experienced, it went off without a hitch.

Missy Elliott, Fabolous, and Keri Hilson came out to honor hitmaker and Virginia native, Timbaland. J Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records sat back and enjoyed performances from fellow Texas homeboys Paul Wall and Chamillionaire. But there were a few moments that stood out above the rest, making its premiere this Monday (June 7) must see TV. One was nasty.  Another was backwards. Read what they are after the jump.

What song does Russell Brand want played at his wedding? (And what was, or will be, played at yours?)

katy-perry-russell-brandImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesI recently spoke with British comedian Russell Brand, star of the out-today movie Get Him to the Greek, about his favorite songs (which you can check out in the current issue of EW). Along the way, I asked the reformed ladies’ man what tune he definitely intended to have played at his forthcoming wedding to Katy Perry. Brand’s answer? “(Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For?” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, from their 1997 CD The Boatman’s Call. “It’s just a beautiful song,” he explained. “Such a romantic, beautiful, song.” And indeed it is, as you can hear after the jump.

Anyhoo, Russell’s revelation seems a good enough reason to ask what song you insisted (or will insist) on hearing at your own nuptials. ABBA? Journey? Napalm Death? Let us know!

Previewing Dierks Bentley's 'Up on the Ridge': Listen to 'Fallin' for You' here!

Dierks-BentleyImage Credit: Danny ClinchCountry star Dierks Bentley is releasing his shiny new bluegrass-influenced album Up On the Ridge this coming Tuesday, June 8. Here on the Music Mix, we’ve got your exclusive preview of three songs. This is Song Two. [Go back to Song One.]

Today’s offering, “Fallin’ for You,” was written by Shawn Camp and Paul Kennerley, with background vocals from former SteelDriver Chris Stapleton. If you thought yesterday’s track (“Draw Me a Map,” with Alison Krauss) was all fiddley and achey in the best possible way, you might like this one, too — but it’s got a little more stomp to it. Let us know what you think in the comments! And come back Monday for the final preview track, on which Dierks, Jamey Johnson, and Miranda Lambert discuss their vices.

Andre 3000 covers the Beatles for a Nike/NBA ad: Watch it here!

Categories: Covers

Andre 3000 is back! While his OutKast partner, Big Boi, has been out in public gearing up for a July 6 solo debut, Dre 3K has been off in a psychedelic underground lair somewhere secretly jamming out to the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. At least, that’s how I’m imagining the genesis of the new Nike ad that has been airing on TV during the NBA finals.

The spot features Andre 3000′s brand-new cover of the Beatles’ “All Together Now” underneath a Kobe Bryant highlight reel. The nursery rhyme lyrics of “All Together Now” aren’t exactly Lennon and McCartney’s finest work, but it’s a catchy little tune, and Andre has fun with it. It’s great to hear some new music from Three Stacks, who’s been quiet of late.

Check out the ad after the jump (clip via Vulture). Have you seen this on TV? What do you think of Andre’s Beatles cover?

Justin Bieber rocks 'Today' show

justin-bieberImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesJustin Bieber just finished performing live at Rockefeller Center for NBC’s Today show. “I’ve got a fever that only cowbell can cure,” Al Roker quipped after the pop sensation left the stage. “And if not cowbell, Bieber’s the next best thing.” I believe this was meant as a witty reference to the ailment known as Bieber Fever, whose sufferers included many if not most of the kids packed into the 30 Rock courtyard this sweltering morning. Luckily, no riots ensued. (At least, no televised riots.)

In between commercial breaks and weather updates, Bieber performed a medley of hits including “Somebody to Love,” “One Time,” and his new Karate Kid single, “Never Say Never.” He handled each one with his usual level of professionalism, from the low-key choreography to the sorta-on-key singing. His dancers are very good at backflips. Whooooooo!

Did you watch Justin Bieber on the Today show? What did you think?
