Ryan Leslie lights up New York's Bowery Ballroom

Ryan-Leslie-NYImage Credit: Ernest EstimeLast night at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, R&B underdog Ryan Leslie ran through an hour’s worth of fan-favorites and even a few new cuts from his forthcoming third album, Les is More. The venue, small and intimate, was perfect for the singer/producer. Leslie’s first two albums, both released in 2009, were commercial busts. But I couldn’t tell last night. Each fan in the almost-filled ballroom knew every word of his cuts.

Strolling on to the stage in a black leather vest, a denim shirt, black jeans, and matching shades, the first song his biker-gloved hands gripped the microphone for was “Glory.” It’s a new track that the rest of the world will hear on his next album. On it the 31-year-old raps about how critics said he’d never amount to much as a solo artist and shouts out his girlfriend, Australian model Nicole Trunfio, for being on the cover for her country’s Vogue Magazine last February. Though he’s got vixen under his arm, he’s not considered to be eye candy to the ladies. Leslie’s looks don’t exactly compete with that of his R&B peers Trey Songz or Usher. And that means plenty in a genre where sex sells. When he eventually dropped the jacket and shirt to reveal his black tank top, few women cheered. One a few rows ahead of me wondered out loud, “Why did this frail man take off his shirt?”

What he lacks in sex appeal, he makes up for in talent, stage presence, and skill. Along with his band, which included a keyboardist, drummer, two guitarists, and three male backup singers—all in black, Leslie ripped through R&B hits like “Diamond Girl,” “Something That I Like,” frequently jumping on his synthesized keyboard for solos. And on “Valentine” he used a talk-box to distort his voice and transitioned to a cover of Zapp and Roger’s “I Want to Be Your Man.”

Along with his music came an elaborate light setup. As he sang, streams of greens, purples, and whites sprayed him with their glow to the beat of his percussion. Expectedly, the biggest reaction from the crowd came when the drums for “Addiction” dropped, quickly earning cheers before he even began to croon. He followed that with “You’re Not My Girl.” Another track he debuted was “Maybachs and Diamonds,” a smooth cut he made a year ago for rapper Rick Ross’ Deeper Than Rap album. It didn’t make Ross’ cut, but likely will make Ryan’s.

Leslie recently parted ways with record label Motown Universal. Not discouraged by the task of finding a new home to release his next album or wary his days as a major label artist are numbered, he delivered a rousing speech before closing the show. “If you’ve got a dream,” he started. “And you believe in that dream, anything is possible.” The crowd cheered and rooted their approval. If they have anything to do with it, he’ll be living out his for a long time.

Michael Jackson, one year later: How will you mark the anniversary of his passing this Friday?

michael-jacksonImage Credit: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty ImagesThis Friday will mark one full year since Michael Jackson’s death. For his most devoted fans, it’s sure to be an emotional day. Even more casual listeners might pause and reflect for a moment when they see June 25 on the calendar.

I think we were all shocked by the news that afternoon last summer. Some of us felt Michael’s loss more deeply than we expected to. And though his peak years of activity were well behind him by then, it’s still a little strange to think that the world of Pop has kept on turning for another 12 months without its King.

So when Friday comes, I know I’ll be listening to Michael Jackson’s music and thinking all over again about his life and significance. It almost feels like a holiday of sorts, an opportunity to celebrate, mourn, or reconsider one of the most important figures in 20th century pop culture. Will you be observing the anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing in any particular ways? Share your plans with us in the comments below.

Drake tops Billboard 200 albums chart, Tom Petty and Sarah McLachlan follow behind

drakeDrake is Billboard‘s chart king today. His Thank Me Later comes in at No. 1 on their 200 albums chart, pushing out 447,000 copies in its first week. The first four slots on the 200 albums chart are new entries. The second highest debut is Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ Mojo at No. 2 with 125,000 units moved. Next is Sarah McLachlan’s Laws of Illusion, which comes in at No. 3 with 94,000 copies sold. No. 4 comes from Now 34, the compilation album of recent pop hits, with 88,000.

With 47,000 copies sold, Justin Bieber‘s My World 2.0 falls one slot to No. 7. Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now remains at No. 8 selling 40,000 albums. Christina Aguilera‘s disappointing Bionic sinks six spots to No. 9 with 40,000 units sold. And last week’s No. 1, Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals, closes out the top 10. It sold 39,000 copies.

Interpol return with 'Lights' video, stay super weird

interpolNew York’s dark-rock dandies Interpol will return this September with a self-titled fourth-album, their first since 2007′s Our Love to Admire—and first without longtime bassist/hairdo virtuouso Carlos D. And guess what? Whatever the calendar and the thermometer might say, it is not (ever) summer in the House of Interpol.

The clip for new single “Lights” begins with a title card: “Deep within the inner chambers of the Three-Horned Rhinoceros Beetle (Chalcosoma Caucasus), a closely guarded pheremone-harvesting ritual is about to begin.” And, in glossy, latex-ladied slo-mo, that’s pretty much exactly what follows. The National Recording Preservation Board inducts tracks by R.E.M., Loretta Lynn, and Tupac Shakur. What songs would you preserve for posterity?

REM-TUPACImage Credit: Ben Desoto/Retna Ltd; Ron Galella/WireImage.comThe Library of Congress’s National Recording Preservation Board announced today its annual list of music that the organization deems important enough to preserve. As always, the line-up is eclectic and includes tracks by King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band (“Canal Street Blues”), Little Richard (“Tutti Frutti”), Loretta Lynn (“Coal Miner’s Daughter”), R.E.M. (“Radio Free Europe”), Tupac Shakur (“Dear Mama”), and entire albums from The Band (The Band) and Patti Smith (Horses).

It’s not a bad list—though it is a fairly unsurprising one. What do you think of the Board’s choices? And what songs would you like to see inducted (bearing in mind that, according to the Board’s criteria, the music must be “culturally, historically or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States,” and be ten years old)?

Drake's 'Thank Me Later' lives up to hype, expecting first week sales around 460,000 copies

DrakeImage Credit: George Pimentel/WireImage.comYeah, it’s called Thank Me Later. But thousands of Drake‘s fans are appreciating him now.  462,989 fans, to be exact. That’s how many albums Hits Daily Double is projecting the 23-year-old rap stud’s debut sold in its first week out. It’s the third-highest debut of the year, behind Sade’s Soldier of Love (502,000 albums) and Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (481,000 copies). Many hoped he’d crack a million copies, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since his Young Money label head Lil Wayne did it with his Tha Carter III in 2008. Pundits and critics alike speculated that he’d sell about half of that.

Drake will debut at No. 1 on Billboard‘s 200 albums chart later today. We’ll have the rest of the chart’s news and official numbers when they arrive. Knowing that he’d be the top dog on the chart, last night Drake tweeted, “Thank you for the support…thank you for the memories…thank me later.”

Did you buy Thank Me Later? What did you think of it? Is it as good as you hoped? Let us know.

Jay-Z and Eminem perform on the 'Letterman' rooftop, after all

jay-z-late-showImage Credit: Jeffrey R. Staab/CBSNot even the mayor of New York City can stop Jay-Z from giving the people what they want. You may recall that last week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office denied Jay the permit he needed for a June 21 surprise performance atop the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater, where CBS’ Late Show With David Letterman tapes. So when Monday came around, the best rapper alive just went upstairs to the theater’s rooftop, where no permit was needed. (“The production decided to stage a performance on the roof of its building, which is private property, is not visible from street level, and is beyond the scope of our permit,” said a representative of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting in a statement provided to EW.) Better yet, he brought a friend you might have heard of named Marshall Mathers.

Jay-Z and Eminem performed their 2001 collab “Renegade,” of course, as well as a selection of their own individual hits. Rap Radar already has tons of YouTube clips from the two hip-hop titans’ set, parts of which will air on this Friday’s Late Show. Will you be tuning in?

Happy Birthday, Cyndi Lauper! You are 57 years awesome

Cyndi-LauperImage Credit: Donna Ward/Getty ImagesShe talks like a cross between a drunk smurf and Tony Soprano. She once called Donald Trump a hypocritical fatty on network television. She is an outspoken, money-where-her-mouth-is supporter of gay and lesbian rights. She put out a pretty solid dance album just two years ago, and unleashes her eleventh, a collection of traditional blues songs, today. She was Gaga-looney before Gaga was even a twinkle. And of course: She bops.
