felaFela!, the Tony-winning Broadway musical about Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, just keeps getting bigger. The original cast recording is in stores now, and the Music Mix is pleased to premier the music video for that soundtrack’s “Water No Get Enemy” right here.

It’s a straight-forward clip, with the Broadway cast performing Kuti’s 1975 cut on stage. Understated special effects add colorful highlights to the black-and-white footage, including lyrics that scroll around the show’s stars in chalky pastels. Hit the jump to watch the video and stream the entire cast soundtrack, then let us know how you like it.

Vince Neil talks about his first solo CD in fifteen years

Categories: Covers, Metal, Music

vince-neilImage Credit: Mick Hutson/Redferns/Getty Images“These are songs that have great memories for me,” says Vince Neil of the tracks he covers on his new CD out today, Tattoos & Tequila. “This is a window into my life.”

The Mötley Crüe frontman’s life is increasingly that of an entrepeneur—one whose business interests actually include a brace of tattoo parlors in Vegas, where he lives. Neil’s latest corporate venture? A  luxury air charter service called Vince Neil Aviation. The rocker seems genuinely disappointed when your reporter suggests some people might balk at the idea of flying on a rock star-owned plane. “My planes are pretty bad a–,” says the singer. “They have hot rod flames on them and a leopard-skin interior. But they’re regulated by the FAA. This isn’t like, ‘Hey bro, let’s go party!’”

After the jump, Neil pilots us back to the past to ruminate upon some of his Tattoos & Tequila cover choices.

Crystal Bowersox slays 'What's Up' on 'The Tonight Show': Let's brainstorm her summer tour set-list!

Crystal Bowersox popped up on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night to perform 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” a song she never tackled during her American Idol season 9 run. Crystal being Crystal, she was vocally terrific, and the ease she brought to Fox’s ubiquitous singing competition translated to the late-night talk-show universe without the slightest hitch. But don’t take my word for it: Check out the beaming face of the backup singer at the -1:13 mark, or the grin on band leader Rickey Minor’s mug at -1:42, then try to suppress your own smile when Crystal gets her holler on and soars over the chorus at -0:55. Gorgeousox indeed! As an unrepentant Idoloonie, I can’t wait to see Crystal on the Idols Live tour (even if, to put it politely, I’m not exactly bursting with anticipation for the entirety of the 10-act bill).

That said, the fact that Crystal is hitting the promotional circuit with “What’s Up” is a good indicator she’ll probably include it on her summer set list. (I’ve got a call in to reps for the singer as well as the Idol tour to confirm.) And that got me thinking: What other songs do you want to see Crystal tackling live? Under the blind belief that tour organizers will give her a six-song set, here are my picks: READ FULL STORY »

Lil Wayne pleads guilty to Arizona drugs and gun charge

Categories: Hip-Hop/Rap, Lil Wayne

lil-wayneImage Credit: Ray Tamarra/Getty ImagesCurrently serving a one-year prison sentence on a gun charge in New York’s Rikers Island, Lil Wayne appeared in a Yuma County, Arizona, courtroom on Friday (June 18) morning through live video feed to change his plea in a 2008 drugs and gun case there to guilty. The Yuma Sun reports that by doing so, his chances of more jail time lessen.

On January 22, 2008 authorities stopped Wayne’s tour bus at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint almost 80 miles east of Yuma. They found cocaine, marijuana, Ecstasy, drug paraphernalia and a .40-caliber handgun registered to Wayne. He was charged with felony possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia. At the time Wayne pleaded not guilty to all the felony charges.

The acclaimed rapper could get up to 36 months of probation on the Yuma charges. They’d start after his New York sentence ends. Superior Court Judge Mark Wayne Reeves sentences Wayne on June 30.

Radiohead 'at the finishing line' on new album, guitarist says

RadioheadImage Credit: Kevin WestenbergAccording to a BBC 6 Music interview with Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien, the UK brood-rock icons’ followup to 2008′s In Rainbows is nearly complete—and may be available by the close of 2010.

“Ideally, it would be great if it came out sometime this year. It has got to. I hope so,” he said. “We’re at the finishing line. When you’re making a record, a film, write a book for ages and ages you think the finishing line is miles away. Now it feels it’s in touching distance. But of course, it being a creative process, at the last bit also, you have bursts of energy, you achieve a lot of things in a small period of time and then you’re nearly there. It might slow down. But yeah, hopefully it will be a matter of weeks.”

The still-untitled release is, he says, “genuinely exciting” and “very different from what we did last time. It’s really nice to be doing this. It’s so good to be making music with the band that you feel is still as good as it’s ever been.” It also sounds like a better time than Rainbow‘s apparently taxing process: “It wasn’t fun making the record,” O’Brien admits. “Traditionally, Radiohead in a studio has been: Don your tin helmet, just see it out, like a war of attrition … We hear it all the time: ‘it sounds like you had a great time in the studio’. But, oh man… that [In Rainbows] was a slog. It was a really long process.”

“At the end, for instance a song like ‘House Of Cards’ has been recorded six times. Plus the fact: we had this genius idea in 2006 to go on tour and do 50 odd shows, play all these songs, go back to studio and record them. And that’s when we went back in with [producer] Nigel [Godrich]. We went in and recorded them having played these songs 50 times … And we got them down and most of them were rubbish. A lot of work in the creative process is rubbish.”

“We knew we had these songs,” he continues. “We really believed in these songs. So, we had to do it right. It just took a long time. And we basically decided then and there at the end of that record: ‘We are never doing this again this way’. That was kind of like the end of Radiohead, mark 2. We decided, the only way that worked for us to carry on was to do it in a different spirit. Enjoy it.”

No word yet on whether this more enjoyable outing’s digital and physical release will follow Rainbow‘s unorthodox release route. Readers, how do you think it should be done?

Rapper Game: Reports of his shooting death at LA's Beverly Center are untrue, according to LAPD

Categories: Hip-Hop/Rap

the-gameImage Credit: Vallery Jean/WireImage.comSeveral websites and blogs have posted news stories claiming that rapper Game—who rose to fame as a part of G-Unit, scored two Grammy nominations for his solo debut, 2005′s The Documentary, and was formerly known as The Game—was killed after being shot in the head during an altercation at LA’s Beverly Center mall late last night, but EW has confirmed with the Los Angeles Police Department that there was no shooting at the well-known LA location last night. “This is the first we’re hearing of this report,” says a spokesperson for the LAPD. “We haven’t gotten any notification of a shooting at the Beverly Center.” From the outset, the rumor seemed shaky at best, as no legitimate news outlets were reporting about either Game’s death or a shooting at the Beverly Center.

Celebrity death rumors tend to spread like wildfire on blogs and websites, even when they’re not true, a fascinating phenomenon that EW reported on earlier this year. In this case, “the game dies in shooting” was the No. 1 entry on Google Trends, a service from the internet giant that claims to provide “insights into broad search patterns.”

UPDATE: Game’s spokesperson has confirmed with EW that the reports were incorrect. “This is a false rumor,” Game’s publicist says. “Game flew this morning to Sacramento for part of his promo run.”
