Picture of Lady Gaga at John Lennon's piano lands on Twitter; Beatles fans freak out

ladygaga-lennonpianoImage Credit: Sean Lennon/TwitpicOh, good Lord. Another day, another tempest in a Gaga teapot. (At least she’s already got the outfit). A Twitpic posted by Sean Lennon—and now removed—shows the singer, in fishnet stockings and what looks like a goth kid’s ice-skating dress, tickling the keys of his father John’s iconic piano, of “Imagine” legend.

“With gaga at mom’s house, she’s belting on the white piano,” Sean tweeted, unaware of the firestorm to follow.

There’s no way to say this without sounding thoroughly obnoxious (nobody likes a bragger!), but having been lucky enough to visit that infamous Dakota apartment several years ago to interview Yoko Ono, the piano is—among many other priceless works of art, Dalis and Warhols and sundry John mementos—just sitting there. It is not encased in bulletproof glass or protected by deadly laser cats. And it’s highly doubtful that Yoko or Sean would let anyone touch the piano without permission; frankly, it’s theirs alone to give.

As Sean himself replied to one incensed caps-lock tweeter (“WHY WOULD YOU LET LADY GAGA PLAY ON JOHN’S PIANO?”) “Firstly, he gave that piano to my mother for her birthday, it is hers, secondly, he was not uptight the way you seem to be,” Sean tweeted. And later, “What should we do, lock it away in a dusty room? So judgmental…Come on, lighten up … life’s too short, there’re enough real problems in the world.”

I can’t tell if it’s her outfit, the generalized ill Twitter will towards Sean (“thus far, you’ve proven to be nothing more than a lucky c–shot”), or a more obtuse hatred for Lady Gaga, but her momentary contact with those keys doesn’t make her an honorary Beatle; John’s spirit most likely did not shoot up her garter belt and make her play “And Your Bird Can Sing” like a woman possessed.

Maybe it will inspire her later, who knows. Most likely, she was just super stoked to touch a pretty phenomenal piece of music history, and if you had the chance (and the blessing of Lennon’s immediate family), wouldn’t you?

Can you say over reaction? Clearly Lady Gaga had permission to play the piano, and she looks up to John Lennon. Why are people freaking out over nothing?

    • Daniel

No she didn’t. She obviously, since she’s such a fame whore, broke into the apartment, stole Yoko’s undies, took a picture of herself and posted it on Sean’s twitter account. GOOD GRIEF! Why is this a controversy? I agree woot, indeed an overreaction.

I hope they put some plastic on that seat, who knows about those butt cheeks

    • Rich

I hope she played the new song she debuted on The Today Show that ends with the chord sequence from “Hey Jude.”

    • Person Who Talks

I honestly am no fan of Gaga (she’s a great performance artist, but her music is simply mildly catchy, sub-par pop), but I don’t get the outrage. I bet John would have been amused by Gaga’s presence on his piano bench. “Imagine no possesions” These people need to take a breather…

    • Dan

      zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Bug

I don’t understand people. What’s the big deal? Pretty sure it’s their property to do with as they wish. Chill out, people.

Also feel the need to mention the irony of people getting worked up about music memorabilia related to a guy who wasn’t really into getting worked up.

    • KC

      Fap-a-licious

  • Sally

I’m not getting all the hype about this either. If John’s family was fine with Lady Gaga playing the piano, then everyone else should be.

    • AcaseofGeo

Not only that, but Gaga is bigger than the Beatles, so…seems appropriate.

      • padilla

she will never be as big as THE BEATLES ok get your info right!!!!

  • J

To all the outraged fans, jealousy is very unbecoming.

  • Courtney

Controversy surrounding Gaga’s every action is so last month.

  • Hans M.

I’m no fan of Gaga’s music (same old disco, as far as I’m concerned), but I appreciate her existence in the current pop realm. I’m a casual fan of the Beatles and Lennon, however. This picture is no big deal, and, indeed, Beatles fans best relax, as I bet Lennon himself would get a kick out of Gaga in his home, playing his piano.

    • Rob

My thought exactly. Had Lennon been there, he probably would have dueted with her.

  • NicWin

Yes, I would if I could. I visited the house where John grew up in Liverpool, and touched everything I could. The piano does belong to Yoko/Sean, and they can let anyone touch it they want.
However, I’d love to know when the fascination with this questionably/marginally talented kid who dresses like a 13 year old who’s mad at her mom will put down the Cliff’s Notes version of Madonna’s career and do something actually original or worthwhile. Or just go away.

    • Aprilcot26

That is the best description of Gaga’s career that I’ve heard to date. Brilliant! :)

    • TKGM

      Well put!

    • BlackIrish4094

      Great description.

      • HM

She’s actually pretty amazing, and it’s hard not to be inspired by madonna if you’re a female pop-star because she was the first to do pretty much anything…i just went to one of her concerts recently and was blown away…i think her willingness to do whatever she wants is why people are fascinated with her, no one has done that really since madonna, and she’s a legit musician and song writer, otherwise i don’t think there would be a picture of her on mr. lennon’s piano

      • tim

Pop music did not start with Madonna. I suggest you dig deeper and look to all the artists both Madonna and Lady Gaga rip off endlessly.

    • Tarc

Clearly, you’ve never actually listened to Gaga. Besides, it’s pop music, and in pop music, homages are not only expected, but required. Gaga is easily the most talented pop star in decades.

      • Robbyrob

        You sir, are on crack!

      • jen

        ummm, no.

      • u

Tarc is probably a 12-year-old kid who has never been exposed to anything better than Gaga.

      • BlackIrish4094

@u. I think “u” nailed it (so corny but I couldn’t resist, lol)

      • padilla

        well pop is gay!!!!!!!!

    • JayNYC

      Sounds like someone’s jealous.

  • Devin

Ironic people are getting so upset over Gaga touching something that’s not hers when the object in question is most famous for being associated with a song that contains the lyric “Imagine no possessions.”

    • Peter

Outstanding post. The outrage is against everything Lennon stood for. He’d be the first to decry the worship of himself and the sacred regard his piano is being held in.

      • Christian

“Imagine no possessions, John” “It’s just a song, Neil”

  • Bob

I have to agree that this isn’t a big deal. Every point made in the article leads you to that conclusion.

However, I have to wonder what Sean Lennon was thinking tweeting that pic in the first place. He probably should’ve realized the only thing that could do would be to set people off. Especially if, like the article implies, Sean is persona non grata to many twitter followers.

    • Flyer

But if he’s persona non grata to them, then why are these people following him on Twitter in the first place?

      • Niix Starkyller

You can read Twitter posts from people you aren’t following when someone you actually do follow decides to re-Tweet it. So, anything which creates a kerfuffle will probably end up on your radar anyway.

  • Christian

I don’t understand any uproar. You know, maybe if Gaga’s publicity team had released this I could see an argument. But she was visiting the Dakota and got to play at the keyboard, and Sean just happened to post a pic.

Haters got to hate. Gaga and Lennon already share one thing in common: they’ve both publicly performed with Elton John.

    • BlackIrish4094

Just my opinion but hater / hating has to be the stupidest saying ever. Anything you disagree with, hater! I don’t like Gaga and don’t think this pic is that big a deal but not everyone who disagrees are just “haters”.

      • Christian

Obviously you’re a hater of me. Hater gotta hate! ;)

    • Robbyrob

And Elton just performed for Rush Limbaugh which voided him out in many, many ways. They can have him!

    • jen

so Christian, I take it you’re 12 then?

      • Christian

        35 and a diehard Beatles/Lennon fan, why?

      • Christian

Although you seriously think a 12-yr old would’ve known about the bet between Reg and John if Whatever Gets You Through The Night hit #1?

  • Sue1

I wish Lady would have faith in her talent and let the theatrics go. Bottom line however, it’s their piano, they can do whatever they want with it. I also agree with those who think John would get a kick out of her.

    • Jen

She is a fantastic singer and songwriter, but isn’t part of her considerable talent producing interesting, entertaining and fairly intelligent theatricality? I think so.

  • Celimene

*blink* People are upset about this? It’s a piano. It’s meant to be played.

    • picoy

yeah but not by a whore

  • Jason

Not a fan of Lady Gaga, but don’t see the big deal. It’s not like she was watching a baseball game from Jerry Seinfeld’s luxury box or something…

  • Steve

And Sean craps on the memory of his father again. Disgraceful. Maybe he can get Miley Cyrus to grind on the piano for New Years Eve.

    • J

And who are you to judge?

    • JCK

Yeah, you are the first random person I think of when it comes down to the do’s and dont’s of John Lennon/Beatles memorabilia. The audacity to think his own son would even have a say. Seriously, give me a freakin’ break and lighten up.

Wars, oil spills and people touching pianos. My god, I just don’t know which one is worse.

    • Danielle

Sorry, Steve, but, even though I’m not that keen on GaGa at the moment (a bit overrated..all the while basically miming Madonna’s career) there is no way in the world she should be lumped in with Miley Cyrus. I mean, have you heard GaGa sing acoustic? Amazing!! Have you hard Miley Cyrus sing acoustic? Umm..didn’t think so.

    • jodipo

wow dude, you need to relax a bit. I promise you John Lennon would be more offended by your irrational judgment of his family and an artist you dont even know than he would be of somebody playing a piano he gave to his wife.
I do not like Gaga, and am a huge fan of the Beatles, but I dont get why this would be upsetting to anyone.

  • HM

Kudos to Sean for saying it as it is. Much ado about nothing! I’m sure Lady Gaga was excited to be invited to play John and Yoko’s famous white piano. And regardless of what people think about Lady Gaga, you have to admit she plays a pretty mean piano!

    • gigi

I’m with you HM on Gaga’s piano skills. She’s pretty amazing…vocally too! She’s a fan who had the blessing of the family to play. Get over yourselves overzealous Beatles fans. *eyeroll*
