Jay Sean's new single '2012': A late-summer anthem?

jay-seanImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosMusic-Mixers, are you down, down, down, down, down for a little Jay Sean news? We caught up with British pop star on the red carpet of the Jersey Shore Soundtrack release party, and he filled us in on his pair of new singles.

“I like to make music that makes people feel good,” he says. “I’m a very positive person myself, and the next two singles that I’m putting out–we’re putting them out simultaneously–are both feel-good songs. One is a club-banger called ‘Break Your Back,’ and the other one, ‘2012,’ is a real feel-good [song]. If you loved “Down” and you loved “Do You Remember,” you’re going to love the next song, which I think is going to be stuck in everybody’s head for the entire summer, and hopefully much longer.”

After giving the song a few listens, I’m inclined to say that Jay Sean may be right. With a synthy string intro, a thumping beat, an exceedingly sing-along-able chorus, and Jay Sean’s characteristic “Oooooooooooohs,” “2012” has all the makings of a radio smash. Sure, the whole “Party like it’s the end of the world–party like it’s 2012″ gimmick may be silly, but when the Black Eyed Peas are already throwing down in 3008, this seems tame by comparison. All in all, it’s another solid pop entry from Jay Sean. Check out the song below:

What do you think? Is “2012” destined to be the new “1999,” or will Jay Sean have to rely on his other single, “Break Your Back,” to keep up his U.S. momentum?

love jay sean, his album was great, unfortunate that it didn’t do better…. as for the song it’s decent

  • “2012” just sounds like a “down”/”do you remember” clone. i enjoyed both of those songs but it’s time to expand your sound a bit, no?

  • Phil

Fun upbeat pop songs like “Down” & “Do You Remember” have ALWAYS done well in his native UK, so for those of you that think “2012” sounds like a clone, need to realize that the pop landscape in the UK and Europe is a bit different than what passes for pop here in the U.S. I think “2012” is awesome and will work wonders to re-ignite Jay back on the U.S. airwaves. I wondered why his label gave up on promoting any more singles after “Do You Remember”, but kept him active on the Kevin Rudolf “We Made It” cut. Glad to see Cash Money continuing with pop hits while Wayne is sitting behind bars! I could totally see Lil Wayne being released in time just as “2012” becomes a massive hit, and dropping some “welcome home/let the party begin” lyrics to a “2012” remix! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

So I picked the wrong Young Money rapper for the remix, haha Nicki Minaj is on the “2012” Rhythm Crossover Mix. Jay’s still untitled album is scheduled for 11.02.10, Minaj’s debut is dropping 3 weeks later on 11.23.10, Thanksgiving week & Black Friday, the biggest sales week of the year….

  • Huh

Phil, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Jay doesn’t even do well in his own country. “Down” was his biggest hit and peaked at #3 for a week and disappeared.

  • claudia

love it…will be on repeat all summer!!

  • Josie

I like it better than “Do You Remember?” but I don’t think it will be as successful as “Down”. An okay song overall, I’d dance to it lol.

  • Naji (Friend of Jay Sean)

This comment I am writing to is the person called ‘huh’ claims to think Jay sean is not doing well in his own countrey..!! at the week when Jays hit – Down bursted onto the UK charts.. cheryl cole was a number 1 and Westlife came second..! NOW the only reason JAY SEAN DID NOT get a number 1 is because both cheryl cole & Westlife performed on X – FACTOR and that gave them a huge effect when entering the charts… where as JAY sean did not…

    • Huh

That explains why “Down” didn’t get to #1, but why did it disappear after that? Jay is NOT big in the UK so stop pretending he is.

  • tiana

yay party like it 12-21-12. haha this song i cant listen to cuz it creeps me out. i am a believer in like aliens n unicorns n esp 2012

  • jerri

  • Manuel

Love the song and track. Go jay!! It’s not about the end of the world- “it says in song- it’s not the end of the world” it’s a positive message about living life 2 the fullest

JAY! you have done it again <3 for those of you saying Jay doesn't do " well " , you're so right. He's doing an outstanding job. All I have to say is that he should keep up his attitude <3 i love it. He's so positive about things – which he includes in his music. I think that's the key factor of his success. Love you Jay.

You’re all fools. This song will go to number 1. No doubt about it.

  • JJ

Well ‘Huh’ you should do some research and find out that he’s had around 3 to 4 top 20 hits in the U.K. previous to his single ‘Down’, plus being a hit in the Asian market..anyways I like this new song and think it will do well.

    • Huh

JJ, please take your own advice. Having a few top 20 hits that immediately drop out of the charts is nothing.

  • soni

please don’t hate because he is a desi
    the man has talent.

  • Patel

Too many haters of Jay… whats the deal with that? he’s putting indians all over, over! Keep repin Jay
