Variety reports that a feature film about the late Grateful Dead leader is starting to take form, with a script based on author Robert Greenfield’s thoroughly readable oral biography, Dark Star. So who should the filmmakers cast to play Garcia?
Since Topper Lilien’s script is said to focus on the singer’s pre-Dead years, they’ll need someone on the younger side. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s face shares a certain sly quality with Garcia’s before he covered it up with shades and facial hair. A more predictable choice might be Seth Rogen, who can pull off the perma-stoned grin that this part will likely require. Eugene Levy is way too old by now, which is too bad, since he bore a distinct resemblance to Jerry in some of the fake album art from A Mighty Wind.
