Ringo Starr: Happy 70th birthday!

ringo-starr-birthdayImage Credit: John Shearer/WireImage.com; Cake: Stone Sub/Getty ImagesLet’s all wish a hearty “Happy birthday!” to Ringo Starr, who was born Richard Starkey exactly 70 years ago today. This milestone will no doubt make many people other than the legendary drummer feel old. Easy solution: Throw on a Beatles album, or better yet, find A Hard Day’s Night on DVD. The world has yet to discover a superior source of renewable youthful energy than the twentysomething Starr’s steady drumbeats and silly faces.

Perhaps you think Ringo is owed a birthday gift of some sort in return for this legacy of awesomeness. What do you get a 70-year-old Beatle — a yellow submarine? Maybe just a nicely framed photograph? Luckily, the man himself has already anticipated this question. In a video posted on his official site, he asks fans around the world to say the words “Peace and Love” and flash a peace sign at 12 noon today in their respective time zones. Get ready!

Check out Starr’s birthday video after the jump, then share your best wishes in the comments section. While you’re at it, let us know your favorite Ringo music moments, whether from the Beatles or his long and successful solo career.

Apple Records to release remastered albums by James Taylor, Billy Preston, and Badfinger

Categories: Reissues, The Beatles

beatles-james-taylorImage Credit: Cummings Archives/Redferns/Getty Images; Michael Putland/Retna LtdThe Beatles’ music label Apple is set to release 15 remastered versions of albums by, amongst others, James Taylor (1968′s James Taylor), Billy Preston (1969′s That’s the Way God Planned It, 1970′s Encouraging Words), Badfinger (1970′s Magic Christian Music, the same year’s No Dice, and 1972′s Straight Up), and classical composer John Tavener (1970′s The Whale and 1971′s Celtic Requiem, which will be available on the same CD). Apple are putting out the collections on October 26.

Apple acts didn’t always enjoy the greatest success during their time with the label. But history has proven that, in addition to their other talents, the Beatles’ track record as talent spotters was pretty decent. Welsh rockers Badfinger are now regarded as one of the great, tragic, cult bands and their song “Without You” has been much covered over the decades; John Tavener was twice nominated in the ’90s for the presitigious UK award, the Mercury Prize; and I believe that James Taylor kid found some success in the ’70s. The slate of reissues will also include albums by Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. They are the first Apple releases to be available by digital download.

Will you be buying any of the reissues? Do you have a favorite Apple act (who don’t have members called John, Paul, George, and Ringo)? And do you think this is is the first step towards Apple making you-know-who’s albums available to buy digitally? Let us know!

Liz Phair raps, goes 'Bollywood' on new song

Categories:

Liz-PhairImage Credit: Rahav Segev/Retna LtdWhen Liz Phair, whip-smart heroine of ’90s alt, turned to Vh1 power balladry, sex kitten straddles and Banana Republic ads in the Aughts, we were mildly disappointed, if not exactly shocked. No more, the lo-fi idol of “F— and Run.”

Now, however, girl done straight-up lost her mind. She is rapping. About Ursa Minor. And call centers? I don’t know, but it’s all bhangra-y, and it’s called “Bollywood,” and the Exile in Guyville Liz Phair we once knew and loved has officially left the building.

Stream this big ball of crazy after the jump, and just … oh man. Maybe use the comments section to try to explain what it is exactly that is going on here.

Prince says 'the Internet is completely over'

prince-internetImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com; Laptop: Stockbyte/Getty ImagesIf you want to hear Prince’s 20Ten in most parts of the world, you’d better buy one of the global newspapers and magazines that will carry the CD as a free insert this weekend. (American release plans have yet to be confirmed.) Oh, you’d rather download it to your laptop? Don’t make Prince laugh.

“The Internet’s completely over,” the Purple One says in an interview with the U.K.’s Daily Mirror — one of the print publications carrying 20Ten, naturally. After complaining about iTunes’ alleged stinginess, he continues riffing on media theory. “The Internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

You may now take a brief break to clear your brain of all those pesky numbers and consider the following paradox: If the Internet is completely over, how are you reading this post? I think Prince just blew my mind.

Meanwhile, by saying the Internet is dead, Prince has gotten every music website on the planet to write about his new album. Clever. Anyway, the rest of the Daily Mirror interview is well worth reading for a glimpse of Prince’s daily life, which includes covering the Beatles, dodging any and all personal questions, and hanging out in a personal concert hall. Check it out for yourself (if you can stand reading on this deadly unhip machine) and let us know what you think — and if you’re looking forward to hearing 20Ten.

George Michael arrested after driving into London store

george-michaelImage Credit: Paul Kane/Getty ImagesFor the seventh time, 47-year-old former pop star George Michael was arrested for a driving-related wrong, BBC News reports. After police got reports that his Range Rover had crashed into a Snappy Snaps shop in London following his attendance at London’s gay pride parade, he was taken into custody at a north London police station under suspicion of being unfit to drive. Michael posted bail and will return in August for a court date.

Michael just regained his driving privileges last year. They were suspended in 2007 for two years for driving while unfit due to drugs. He was accused of driving into three parked cars and driving off without first telling the cars’ owners.

Lilith Fair co-founder Terry McBride on the tour's travails: 'No matter what the media says, there won't be any more cancellations'

Categories: Lilith Tour, Q&A, Tours

Lilith-Fair-Sarah-BaduImage Credit: David Bergman/Getty ImagesThe initially triumphant return of Lilith Fair has been hampered this summer by low ticket sales, cancelled shows — 10 cities were dropped yesterday — and headliners like Norah Jones and Kelly Clarkson pulling out of the fest. We spoke to Lilith co-founder Terry McBride today in hopes of figuring out what’s plaguing these ladies, if there’s more trouble yet to come, and whether it’s really as bad as it looks.

Entertainment Weekly: There had been some speculation that the shows you cancelled yesterday had been cancelled for a while, at least according to Norah Jones’ manager.
Terry McBride: No, see, this is where the press creates its own situation. Some of the media in Calgary said the Calgary show was cancelled, and then the media promptly got on Lilith because there was about an hour and a half line to get into the venue. The venue, having read the press, thought no one was going to show up, so they’d cut back on staff. So the media is sitting there criticizing Lilith for having long lines, that they themselves created. So I just sit there and go, Unless Lilith Fair says something is cancelled, it’s not cancelled. But if the media says it, it becomes truth.

Then what was the truth? When were those dates cancelled?
We had let certain camps know that we were looking at cancelling shows. Just as a heads up. It’s the professional, polite thing to do. Hey, you might want to look at other options. These shows are not cancelled yet, but we’re looking at them on a daily basis. So rather than just catching everyone by surprise, we were very professional about it. So then a journalist goes in there thinking she’s being an investigative reporter, and ultimately comes out and says these shows are cancelled, which they’re not. Probably the most bizarre thing for us is that some of those shows, the ticket sales were actually quite brisk. Then that news story gets picked up by the local media as truth, and ticket sales just stopped.

Amy Winehouse and ?uestlove: Supergroup in the making?

questlove-winehouseImage Credit: Chago Akii-bua; Mischa RichterDoes ?uestlove ever sleep? Fresh off last week’s release of the Roots’ best album in several years, the hip-hop band’s drummer/mastermind is already teasing his next dream project: a supergroup consisting of himself and troubled wailer Amy Winehouse. This would be on top of the Roots’ Late Night With Jimmy Fallon job and their upcoming collaborative album with John Legend. Like I said, dude stays grinding.

?uestlove spilled the beans in an interview with Spinner at the Toronto Jazz Festival, where the Roots performed on Tuesday. He said international red tape is the only thing preventing him and Winehouse from jamming together. “[The supergroup is] definitely going to happen — it’s just that we have to work overtime to get her visa situation together,” he promised. “The closest she can come to the States is Jamaica.” He hopes to discuss this face-to-face with Winehouse when the Roots hit France next week. ‘Til then, they plan to continue “Skype-ing the s— out of each other.”

Until that visa issue is resolved, this may be more aspiration than reality. It’s a pretty awesome idea, though. All the drama in Winehouse’s personal life hasn’t made me one bit less eager to hear her follow up 2006′s Back to Black. If anything, sad to say, that kind of hard-lived experience could make her music even more compelling. And ?uestlove would be a brilliant choice to draw that quality out on record. As a drummer and producer, he’s helped coax amazing albums out of complicated personalities like D’Angelo and Al Green.

What do you think of this potential pairing? Anyone else psyched for ?uestlove and Amy Winehouse to team up?

Trent Reznor to score Facebook movie 'The Social Network'

social-networkImage Credit: Rob Sheridan; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosLike button? Trent Reznor has announced via the Nine Inch Nails newsfeed that he will be scoring The Social Network—a.k.a. The David Fincher Facebook Movie, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, and Rashida Jones.

“I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall,” Reznor writes, “and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN. Well, that plan didn’t work out so well. David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film … I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned. Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

“Months later, I’m happy to tell you we’re nearing the completion of this and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.”

“As Atticus and I near the end of the scoring process, we’re looking forward to the next phase – distilling the large amount of music we’ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two). The film opens Oct 1 in the US with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.Speaking of the film… it’s really f—ing good. And dark!”

Drake postpones European tour to be with his sick mom

Categories: Drake, Hip-Hop/Rap, Tours

drakeIn a sweet reminder that the kid’s barely out of Degrassi — and in today’s other big tour-cancellation news — Drake is postponing his European tour to stay home and tend to his mom, who’s undergoing surgery.

According to a statement, the rapper says, “Despite my best hopes, it is apparent that my mother will need surgery earlier than anticipated. In light of this news, I have made the difficult decision to cancel my European tour in order to support her during her recovery, just as she supported me through the years. I cannot thank my European fans enough and look forward to performing abroad soon. I ask everyone to please respect my family’s privacy during this time.”

The shows in London, Paris, and Amsterdam will be rescheduled for November 2010 (where ideally they will not cause any riots); festival dates are flat-out cancelled. Bummer for you Euros, but we wish Drake’s mom all the best, and hope you’ll join us in a hearty “Awwww…”
