German festival stampede kills 19

Categories:

love-parade-crowdingImage Credit: Christoph Reichwein/Getty ImagesStampeding at the Love Parade dance music festival in Duisburg, Germany killed at least 19 people over the weekend. BBC News has a full report, with descriptions that are not for the faint of heart.

More than a million people attended the festival to see performers from around the world. The stampede apparently occurred when a narrow tunnel to the festival area became dangerously overcrowded. Local authorities are investigating why security plans failed to prevent the stampede.

In a statement quoted by BBC News, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: “Young people came to party. Instead, there was death and injury. I am aghast and saddened by the sorrow and the pain.” The Music Mix joins her in sending our condolences to the victims’ friends and families.

Sugarland's 'Stuck Like Glue' video features an Awesome 'Chuck' star: We've got your exclusive First Look!

sugarland-stuck-like-glueImage Credit: Mercury NashvilleSugarland will release their fourth studio album, The Incredible Machine, on October 19, and first single “Stuck Like Glue” just hit radio this weekend. It’s cute and peppy and does that annoying Sugarland thing where you hear it once and it gets lodged in your cranium for days. Go ahead and buy it off iTunes, if you can stand all the joy.

But as a massive Chuck fan, I’m more interested in the song’s forthcoming video, especially after the band tweeted the above photo with a note that read, “@JoshSchwartz76 [Chuck co-creator Josh Schwartz], We have your actor. Sugarland gets to guest-star on Chuck, or next season just got a little less ‘Awesome.’” Sugarland + Chuck?? Oh, be still my geeky little Texan heart!

After the jump, we chat with Sugarland frontlady Jennifer Nettles to find out what she and her “henchman” Kristian Bush are up to, get the scoop on the video, and present two First Look shots of Nettles and Ryan McPartlin — Devon, a.k.a. “Captain Awesome,” on Chuck — exclusively for you nice EW.com readers. You and me, baby, we’re stuck like glue… argh. GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD.

Pooping pigeons stop Kings of Leon show: Everyone's a critic!

Categories: Kings of Leon, Music, Tours

kings-of-leonImage Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty Images; Christof Koepsel/Getty Mother Nature flipped the Kings of Leon the bird on Friday when the rockers had to abandon a show after being repeatedly pooped on by pigeons, according to CNN. The band were bombarded by an infestation of birds in the rafters of the Verizon Ampitheatre in St. Louis, Mo.

“I was hit by pigeons on each of the first three songs,” said bassist Jared Followill. “We had 20 songs on the set list. By the end of the show, I would have been covered from head to toe.”

At this juncture there really is just one question to ask: If you were a pigeon, which musician would you poop on?

Bret Michaels: Police find marijuana on rocker's tour bus

brett-michaelsImage Credit: Jordan Strauss/WireImage.comOn Wednesday night, police in Dekalb County, Ind., found marijuana on a tour bus carrying the Poison rocker and Celebrity Apprentice star Bret Michaels, according to the Fort-Wayne News-Sentinel. A DeKalb Clounty Sheriff’s deputy pulled over Michaels’ two tour buses just after 11.30pm because of a lighting violation. Officers searched both buses and found marijuana on both as well as other unidentified controlled substances. No arrests were made, but according to Chief Deputy Jay Oberholtzer, charges have been forwarded to the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office.

“Two of Bret’s tour buses were pulled over Wednesday night,” Bret Michael’s spokesperson tells EW via email. “Officers on the scene claimed there were no trailer tag lights. No arrests were made. Mr. Michaels allowed an open search of the buses and everything was handled in a professional manner.”

The spokesperson had no comment on the allegation that drugs were found on the buses.

Levi Johnston to appear in music video. Hasn't that clock hit 15 yet?

Levi-JohnstonImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosAccording to the AP, Levi Johnston is going to appear in a music video. Yes, that Levi Johnston — the former hockey player best known for knocking up Bristol Palin, having trouble staying engaged to her the first time around, spending the past year picking fights with the Palins at large, then magically re-convincing Bristol to marry him, which just proves that love is a magical force we should never, ever fight, because we will lose, or something. Anyway, according to Johnston’s attorney, Levi is looking forward to doing the video. “It will give him an opportunity to act a little bit in front of a camera,” says the attorney. “He’s done a commercial before, but something like this is a little more involved.”

Johnston will be challenging his acting chops as accompaniment to a song called “After Love,” a lukewarm slice of R&B cheesesteak from Brittani Senser, who is the daughter of a former NFL football player. The AP also caught a glimpse of the video treatment: “The couple share tender moments before they are driven apart by the young woman’s mother. Unaware that her mom’s interference forced her boyfriend to go, she ‘throws herself into her mother’s arms. She tells her mother that she was wrong about Levi.’”

I’ve gone ahead and embedded a live clip of Ms. Senser performing “After Love” after the jump. I invite you to spend as much time as you’d like envisioning her sharing tender moments with Levi (pictured above), and then being driven apart by a mother figure. Possibly one toting a shotgun. And bearing a faint resemblance to Tina Fey.  READ FULL STORY »

Los Lobos exclusive: Download 'Burn It Down' here

los-labosImage Credit: Drew ReynoldsVenerable L.A. rockers Los Lobos will return after four years on Aug. 3 with Tin Can Trust. Can’t wait that long? We’ve got you covered! You can download standout track “Burn It Down” right now exclusively on the Music Mix.

The song rides a strong roots-rock groove to a climax of mean feedbacky guitar. I’d make a True Blood/Eclipse werewolf joke here, but Los Lobos have been howling for decades before either of those projects, so I’ll refrain.

Click through to the jump and enter your email address for a free MP3 download of “Burn It Down,” unavailable anywhere else. What do you think? If you like what you hear, take a look at the site they’ve set up where you can pre-order several cool Tin Can Trust packages. JULY 30 UPDATE: This free download offer has expired. Tin Can Trust arrives in stores Aug. 3.

Nicki Minaj drops new hints about her debut album (will.i.am!), needs someone to make her an Annie Lennox mixtape

Nicki-ManajImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesYoung Money’s Nicki Minaj made her name as a chameleon, with an ever-changing look and a pliable character enhancing tracks from Usher, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera, just to name a few. With her debut album due Nov. 23, she’s finally making a solo splash, and this week rode addictively-Autotuned second single “Your Love” to No. 1 on Billboard’s rap charts. The track samples the 1995 Annie Lennox hit “No More I Love Yous,” but Minaj — who was a pre-teen when that song came out — says she barely knows Lennox’s music. “I was a fan of her fashion,” Minaj says. “I was so little [in her heyday], so I just remember her image. That particular song stood out, because that beat is insane.”

Meanwhile, her untitled debut is still coming together. When asked if there’s anything new to announce, Minaj smiles coyly, and confesses a tiny tidbit: “I don’t want to say too much, but I just did some work with will.i.am.” Production work? A guest vocal of some sort? “Just something for my album that I’m really excited about,” is all she’ll say.

She’ll happily elaborate on the project as a whole. “The album is much more emotional than you anticipate, which is a great thing,” Minaj says. “And I know women are gonna connect to the album so much. I felt like for so many years I was the girl who did the catchy little raps, and it’s time for me now to tell my story, and in telling my story, I’m really telling every girl’s story. We all go through the same thing. So the album is gonna feel very personal to every female.”

What do you think, Mixers? Excited to see Minaj transform into a solo hitmaker? Are you digging “Your Love”? And if you were to make Minaj an educational Annie Lennox mixtape, what would be on it?

Susan Boyle reportedly planning Christmas album

susan-boyleImage Credit: Daniele Venturelli/Getty ImagesIs Susan Boyle making a Christmas album? According to a report in Billboard citing unnamed “U.S. retail sources,” the Scottish sales phenomenon is currently in the studio recording a Yule-themed set for a potential October release. A spokesperson for Columbia Records confirms that Boyle is in the process of recording her second album, but was unable to confirm whether or not it has anything to do with the holidays.

Boyle’s debut, I Dreamed A Dream, sold more than three million copies in the U.S. in just over a month after being released late last November, making her follow-up a very big deal within the music industry. What do you think of this report? Would you buy a Susan Boyle Christmas album?

Katy Perry's new single 'Teenage Dream' hits the web

katy-perryImage Credit: Emma SummertonJust in time for the waning reign of “California Gurls” and its candy-coated swurls, Katy Perry has dropped another single, the title track from her upcoming sophomore album (not counting, of course, the Katy Hudson years) Teenage Dream.

It’s being pulled from YouTube about as quickly as the fans are uploading it, but Perez Hilton has a sanctioned stream here; the midtempo love song (ode to Aldous Snow?) continues the retro steez that was all over “Gurlz”—here, I’m getting ’80s ladies like Pat Benatar and Berlin‘s Terri Nunn, maybe a little Kim Wilde; either way, it’s definitely wearing a Danskin leotard.

The song goes to iTunes tomorrow. What do you think, readers—does this bode well for Dream? Or do you prefer the Perry of bi-curious kisses and Vegas wake-up calls?

Travie McCoy says Gym Class Heroes want to 'recapture the rawness' with their next album

Gym-Class-HeroesImage Credit: Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesFrontman Travie McCoy is doing his solo “Billionaire” thing at the moment, but he and the rest of Gym Class Heroes are already thinking about their next move as a group. “We have close to 15 demos written for the next Gym Class record,” McCoy recently told EW.

I spoke with the rapper in between his opening performances on Rihanna‘s current tour, where Gym Class Heroes drummer Matt McGinley is keeping the beat for him. McCoy was looking forward to guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo visiting them on the road soon. “We’re going to start writing some more stuff,” he said. “Once things slow down a little bit for this cycle, we’re definitely diving head first into the next Gym Class record.”

While it’s too early to know exactly what the follow-up to GCH’s 2008 album The Quilt will sound like, McCoy has some ideas. “We’re going to go back to what drew people to us in the beginning: the four of us in a room just jamming until something sounded cool,” he said. “We’re going to try to stay away from working with a lot of producers on this record. We want to recapture the rawness that got us signed and revisit upstate New York, where we wrote a lot of [2005's] The Papercut Chronicles.”

Are you looking forward to Gym Class Heroes’ return? What do you hope their next album will sound like?
