Lady-GagaImage Credit: Rob Verhorst/Redferns/Getty ImagesLady Gaga has been nominated for a record-breaking 13 MTV Video Music Awards—including Best Pop Video and Best Female Video—while Eminem received eight nods in the list of nominations, which was released at noon today. glad to see florence and the machine getting some noms…

    • Sara

I know! Sadly, that looks like the only thing to be excited about. Is this really what we have to offer for music these days?

      • Ally

Well there is some MGMT and Black Keys love in there too!

    • u

I was shocked to see FATM on the list, I didn’t think they were well-known enough to nab some VMA nods. I’m glad, though.

  • S.O.

I still think Muse – “Uprising” was snubbed for Video of the Year. Its way better than “Kings & Queens” – 30 Sec. to Mars.

    • JR

30 Sec. to Mars was epic but Uprising was forgettable

    • S.O.

also, no Vampire Weekend – “Giving Up the Gun” or “Cousins” nominated for anything?

      • danny

        agreed!

      • Jessica

I even like Holiday’s video. Vampire Weekend was robbed.

    • u

The only great video Muse ever had was “Knights of Cydonia”. Normally, if you want great visuals from Muse, you watch their performances, not their crappy videos.

      • S.O.

I agree that watching them live its great visuals including them live is awesome. But most of their videos are decent to really good. Only Neutron Star Collision wasn’t good cause it practically was a Twilight: Eclipse promo (that song wasn’t good either).

    • 4rocket

The video for “Uprising” was quite tame for what was essentially a really, really good song. It deserved a more epic video.

  • franklin bluth

How do you have a VIDEO Music Award show when you don’t show Videos? Shouldn’t MTV have an awards show for reality TV instead?

    • Sharlin

      Amen.

    • kaloalo

      totally true

    • Kim

Oh, God, don’t give them any ideas…

      • Vince from NYC

Actually… I love it.. Some categories include:
        Best Cat Fight
        Biggest Train Wreck
        Best Drunk hook up
        Best Roomate brawl
Instead of best Actor/Actress we will have a Worst Human Being Alive category. Jersey shore would surley clean up ala Gaga..

    • Jayme

Isn’t MTV’s award show basically a reality tv show where celebrities act up under the farce of recognizing various music videos.

  • JC

Best new Artist section were so predicatable

  • Jethro

Why are collaborators in the major categories such as Best Male Video and Best New Artist? This makes absolutely no sense. If one gets to be nominated in the BNA, it should be strictly the sole artist who deserves to be the best new artist, same goes for Male Video. So it is safe to say Justin Bieber (BNA) could not have done it without Ludacris and Usher (BMV) without Wil.I.Am.

Collaborators belong in the collaborators category and not in any single deserving category. Oh yeah, that’s right, it’s MTV, the brains behind Jersey Shore.

  • Del Taco

    13 VMA awards ??

    Big deal.

This is the same network that nominates Twilight and its’ bastard children Best Movie of the Year !!

    Go figure

    • Miss Talk

Ditto! 13 nominations don’t mean a thing when it comes to MTwilightV anyway…
So this year, the VMA will be pretty much about Lady Gaga, “Telephone”, BoB and “Not Afraid” and “Empire State of Mind”. “California gurls” better not win anything because the video has NOTHING to do with California.
No nomination for Xtina? nor Miley? oopsie…
Since Beyoncé, Jay Z, Alicia won’t show up, MTV better have KANYE and Chris Brown performing otherwise, I smell snoozefest…

  • B-

Best Choreography and “Video Phone” was nominated? They only had one dance break and GaGa couldn’t even keep up with Beyonce. No nomination for Ciara’s “Ride” in that category when her choreography in dancing solo is so good it’s insane… Come on MTV. I know everyone loves GaGa and Bad Romance was well made, but let’s be serious. You guys keep ignoring good stuff. Enrique and Pitbull for Best Dance when the video seemingly just came out, and dance music videos are pretty much the most creative out there. Finally while BOB is rapping on Airplanes, that is not a Hip Hop song. It’s never played on Urban radio. And it sucks that you neglected other deserving hip hop artists. Usher and Nicki Minaj were robbed in a nomination for Best Collaboration. And finally, what happened to Rock Music?

    • fancypants

Lady Gaga is not even a good dancer. She definitely couldn’t keep up with Beyonce and she doesn’t have rhythm. Her dancing is mostly flailing and jerky movements. She dances like Elaine Benes. Anyways, I’m glad Janelle Monae was nominated for Tightrope. The moves in that are awesome, innovative, yet a cool homage to James Brown.

      • Strepsi

LOL @ Elaine Benes. I agree about Video Phone, but BAD ROMANCE deserves every award it can get: Lady Gaga is one of the few pop artists keeping videos creative, epic, and buzzworthy.

Agree Janelle Monae should win choreography: she is the love child of Michael Jackson and James Brown, with the face of Tootie. Love her.

      • Woot

        Love Janelle Monae!

    • S.O.

To answer your question “What happened to Rock Music?”

Listen to Rock Music that isn’t on Top-40 radio & go to some type of Rock or Alternative music format (on however you listen to music in general). IE: Muse, Vampire Weekend, The Black Keys, Silversun Pickups, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix (just to name a few).

      • u

Rock music is still here, but it’s not getting the same love it once did in the did in the decades past.

    • victoria

i love ciaira and like how back then she had this tomboy thing about her and her dancing.but NOW shes too sexed up for me.shes acting like every other pop star when it comes to this kinda thing.but i do have to agree with u on video phone.u know a guy choreographed that1 and plus don’t blame gaga for the dance moves cuz thats the choreographers fault.she does make those moves herself,u know.

  • Iyad

I’m sorry but this is the worst list ever!

  • Juan

Enrique’s “I Like It” for best dance music video? Let’s be honest, MTV: it’s basically the theme to Jersey Shore Season 2. You HAD to work that in somehow.

    • Rich

I love how only 2 of the 5 “Best Dance Video” nominees actually make dance music. I guess “Best Dance Or Hip-Hop-With-A-4/4-Beat Video” was too accurate.

  • Damon

    This list sucks!

  • Chels725

Wahoo! Go Paramore & B.o.B. & Hayley Williams.

    • Alex56

That’s right! Woohoo:) They have to win this year. Their latest album “Brand New Eyes” has had amazing videos, Ignorance, Brick By Boring Brick, The Only Exception and Careful. I’m really happy Ignorance’s up for Best Rock Video, but I feel their videos for ‘Brick’ and ‘Exception’ deserved some nominations too. For ‘Brick’ Best Art Direction, and for ‘Exception’, Art Direction and Best Direction. I’m happy with their nomination anyways :)
And Hayley being nominated with B.o.B for “Airplanes” is just AWESOME :D

  • Menchy

Good to see Lady GaGa topping the list. Noone in recent memory has done more for the music video genre than her.

  • Molly

I love how Rob Thomas has been ignored…. AGAIN….

    • Phil

This is the VMAs not the VH1 Awards sweetie! I love Rob & Matchbox too, but c’mon….

    • Rich

      Like his last album???

      ZING!!!

  • Janizzle

It’s like Lady Gaga is nominated twice for almost every category…

I don’t even watch music videos anymore, I think VMA’s are irrelevant at this point, especially for “MTV”.

    • victoria

she deserves it! she was robbed at the vmas.thats when gaga was at her prime!but for some reason they wanted to give taylor swift all the awards!

      • @victoria

She was robbed at the Grammy’s, sweetie. This is the VMAs list.

  • Phil

Ok, so I’m 31 now, and visit mtv.com often enough during the day, but how did people vote to dtermine these nominees, cause if I were Will.I.am and the Black Eyed Peas, who have had MASSIVE hits this year and spent a boatload on their vidxeos…I’d be pretty freakin’ pissed tight now! NOT ONE NOD! HELLO that “Meet Me Halfway” video was Star Wars-AWESOME!!!! And then the combined “Imma Be & Rock That Body” video?! Talk about MASSIVE OVERLOOK!

    • Miss Talk

Especially when we know that “Boom Boom Pow” won a Grammy… At this point, it’s much about irrelevance than snobbery.

    • Mikey B

I haven’t watched videos on MTV.com but I do stay up waay too late to watch them every weeknight on MTV (for those who don’t know, late at night/early morning is the time when MTV, MTV2 and VH1 air -very few I might add- music videos) and during this “The E.N.D.” album period, neither MTV nor VH1 has aired one, NOT ONE video by the Black Eyed Peas! They sometimes show videos from their previous albums but nothing from this very successful release. I agree, Meet me half way was very good, and so was the mash up of videos that you mentioned. I think MTV has some feud with the Peas but I don’t know, and if they do play the vids on mtv.com then the feud mustn’t be serious if there’s one.

    • Rich

Holy crap, MTV showing good taste? Stop the presses!!
