Wyclef Jean: 'Death threats come with the territory' in bid for Haitian presidency

wyclef-jeanImage Credit: Frederic Dupoux/Getty ImagesWyclef Jean says he has received death threats since announcing his plan to run for the presidency in Haiti on Aug. 9. “We know this situation we’ve embarked on, death threats come with the territory. But beyond that it’s not about all those negative information [sic],” Jean told the BBC.

The musician now has armed guards protecting him in his childhood town while he waits to see if the Haitian government will approve his candidacy tomorrow. One potential hitch: Jean reportedly hasn’t lived in Haiti for five consecutive years, as required by Haitian law for presidential hopefuls. He also doesn’t have the unanimous support of his peers. Jean’s Fugees bandmate, Pras, has publicly stated that he doesn’t support the campaign, while actor Sean Penn has criticized Jean for being a “non presence” in Haiti since January’s devastating earthquake.

What do you all think? Should Jean step down as a candidate in light of these obstacles? Or should he keep up his campaign?

    what a loser!

  • Nick

It’s not as though he’d be any worse than the previous Presidents of Haiti…

  • Francoois

Wyclef is a fraud. A key member of his political party said today he is unaware of any death threat. Why does Wyclef has to lie so much and tarnish the country he claims to love so much?

  • brent

You should shut your mouth if you nothing good to say. You do not a bloody thing about haiti’s political terrain. The man received death threats as reported. Wyclef is haiti’s actual only hope. The old dogs are upset and want him dead or gone. The man is fighting for his people and country.

    • by stealing 95% of the money pledged to his country. he’s so honorable.

  • kilo

Wyclef has destroyed his legacy in trying to satisfy his oversize ego!

    • Batkow

What legacy,Music, It’d be a better legacy to try to help his people

      • Sahana

WoW what a joke. Society and the media, leaning on the PEOPLE of the cuotnry to help Haiti, and then in the next breath reaffirming that we need them to exist. ARen’t you a good little lemming, selling your little guilt trip. The truth is: the only thing useful about your sending 10 from your phone is that you dont “practically” have to feel guilty. You sending 10 by phone didnt extract one single “poor native” from from under a wall, or help the twently people trapped in a building. You braintrusts act as if pressing a button and sending 10 is all that it takes. You are feeding a machine, and that is all you are doing.’you have a nice day’

Who cares about Haiti? I’d rather live in the worst ghetto in America than be the king of Haiti! If some rapper wants to rule over an aids-infested sewer then let him!

    • SarahBSharpe@example.com

Fcuk u! u r nothing but an ignorant bastard

    • tiwill

What a complete idiot! You do not have any idea of what you’re talking about. You may want to live in the worse ghetto in America than any place in Haiti, because there are places in Haiti where a crackhead like you won’t be able to afford.

  • demetrius

since most of you guys are judging wyclef, what do you know about the other candidates known as thieves. you guys havent learned anything, do you know how it feels for the poors to have the same exact education with the richs.

  • Kaymenab

I have read these previous comments about Mr. Clef, I think you all are being disrespectful to the man. the man had done so much for Haiti I think we should do nothing more but sending good vive. I think Mr. Clef should continue his bid. In fact I am geting ready to go vote for the man. If don’t say anything else again to you all rmember this: give respect to our our brother that bringing change.

    long live Clef

  • Mr. Politrix

First of all, I dont think someone like Rusty could even last five minutes in America’s worst ghetto. If it wasn’t for that country, you wouldn’t know what freedom or liberty meant. Let’s face it, Haiti is in this position because alot of people wants the only black owned country in the western hemisphere. And we also dont owe any country any money..(i.e.) the U.S. Wyclef on the other hand, would be a great Joe Biden, but he sure ain’t no OBAMA. He needs to show support for his uncle and not run for himself. He has Oprah power, I like to call it. The haitians in Haiti don’t even know the candidates, and there’s over 30 of them. You would first have to get the people of Haiti to understand, believe, and respect government before you could change the country. And right now, the true strugglers don’t give a damn about Haiti or it’s politics.

    • well said.

  • SarahBSharpe@example.com

Mr. Polittrix, I feel you. Haiti is the western atmospher leader in freedom; we were the first to be freed & independent as a black nation. Haiti did have an outstanding debt until it was waved off after the earthquake. As far politic goes, if Wyclef was not in this race, 99.9% of these people with their negtive feedbacks wouldn’t be aware that would be an election going on in Haiti. Wyclef as done & still doing for his country. Wyclef for president! fas-a-fas

  • Demetrius
