Kanye West debuts 'Power' video: Yes, but what does it mean??

kanye-west_240.jpg Image Credit: Foc Kan/WireImage.comKanye West debuted his video for “Power” tonight, a short, somewhat confusing burst of imagery that leaves most everything to the imagination. West, draped in heavy gold blingery, stands center frame with the whites of his eyes glowing fiercely against a backdrop evoking the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, if it was painted in the pyramids. Men and women move in slow motion tableau, some bearing obvious Egyptian symbolism (horns evoking the goddess Hathor), some clashing with swords, some just sort of writhing like lost extras from Caligula. You can watch the very short but very crowded clip after the jump. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before West tweets a picture of a fancy sink by way of explanation, but while we’re waiting, what does it all mean, Mixers?? READ FULL STORY »

Eminem's 'Love the Way You Lie' video: Is this depiction of domestic violence too much?

eminemImage Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagicEminem premiered his new video for “Love the Way You Lie” tonight, and it features Rihanna standing in her underpants in front of a flaming house where Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox are intermittently beating the crap out of each other and playing intense, Stanley Cup levels of tonsil hockey. Meanwhile, Em is standing in a field of pure and innocent tall grass, rapping about how he is sorry. All the rage and beatings are lit in a very dramatic and sexy way, because the people doing the raging and beating are very lithe and muscular and gorgeous. As far as one can tell, it is still not Penny’s boat.

Watch the video after the jump and weigh in, Mixers. It’s a great track, and a star-powered video. The moral of the story is, clearly, that stealing vodka is wrong. But does it take responsibility for its dramatization of domestic violence? And knowing all we know about Rihanna’s personal life (and Em’s), is this collision of reality and fame-world cleansing or just awkward? READ FULL STORY »

Robyn at New York's Webster Hall: Best show of the year?

robyn-PAUL-WAGTOUICZImage Credit: Paul WagtouiczAs one Mr. Jacobim Mugatu might say: “That damn Sweden, it’s so hot right now.” And it’s true; I’m sure we could talk about umlauts and fanged Nordic dreamboats and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo all day long.

But I am here to tell you about The Girl With The Spandex Banana Pants—the tiny, platinum-quiffed blond who last night swept New York City’s Webster Hall into a frenzy so wild that it threatened to collapse the floors of that historic venue and send the sold-out crowd straight to their calamitous deaths, still dancing. (I’m serious: Robyn, they would die 4 U).

I confess, I am already impartial; I put the Stockholm native’s self-titled album at no. 4 on my 2008 year-end Critic’s Top Ten List, and I’ve always tried to see her the few times she’s booked shows Stateside. But I don’t know if I’ve ever witnessed an audience as genuinely ecstatic and transported as they were last night. And I know I’ve rarely seen a singer—with no wild stagecraft, no expensive set pieces—connect so thrillingly, bring it so hard, and dance like Rosie freaking Perez in the opening sequence of Do The Right Thing, all while simultaneously nailing nearly every note in her hour-plus set. Beach Boys' label wants writing credit and royalties for Katy Perry's 'California Gurls'—but they're not suing yet

beach-boys-vs-katy-perryImage Credit: Emma Summerton; Chris Miller/Camera Press/Retna LtdCalifornia Boys and Gurls—can’t they all get along? The New York Post is reporting that the Beach Boys’ reps are threatening to sue Katy Perry for including the line ” in her summer-owning, booby-cream-shooting no. 1 hit “California Gurls.” Turns out, it’s not true—at least, not yet.

A source is quoted in today’s Post saying that the Boys’ label Rondor has sent a letter to Perry’s label Capitol demanding that Mike Love and Brian Wilson be given a writing credit on her song, as well as royalties, for its appropriation of the line “I wish they all could be California girls,” from their own 1965 classic of the same title.

Wilson’s rep told them, “Rondor owns the track and called Brian and Mike, saying they were going to complain. Brian likes Katy’s record and doesn’t know where the situation stands.” Love’s rep said, “Mike and Brian wrote the song . . . but any legal action is up to Rondor.”

When reached by EW, a Rondor spokesperson explained the label’s current stance: “In regard to the various rumors circulating, we would like to make it clear that there is no lawsuit against the writers or publishers of ‘California Gurls.’ We have established diminutive claim. It is up to the six writers and various publishers of ‘California Gurls’ to decide whether they honor the claim or not.”

“Using the words or melody in a new song taken from an original work is not appropriate under any circumstances, particularly one as well known and iconic as ‘California Girls.’ Rondor Music, who publishes the works of Brian Wilson and Mike Love, is committed to protecting the rights of its artists and songwriters, and with the support of the writers, that is exactly what we are doing.”

Wilson, the band’s mercurial, legendary frontman does appear to be a genuine fan of the song; he told the LA Times on July 20, “I love her vocal. She sounds very clear and energetic . . . The melody is infectious.” READ FULL STORY »

Joe Perry lashes out at Steven Tyler over 'American Idol' rumors: 'After 40 years, he couldn't tell me about this?'

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

aerosmithImage Credit: Scott D. Smith/Retna LtdAerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has criticized band mate Steven Tyler over the singer’s possible recruitment as an American Idol judge, according to the Boston Herald.

Perry told the paper that he confronted Tyler last Saturday before Aerosmith’s show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, having read about the singer’s possible new job on the Internet. But Tyler informed the guitarist that he had been told not to discuss the subject. “I mean, after working with me for 40 years, he couldn’t tell me about this?” the guitarist said. “Why so secretive? We’re told it’s a done deal. If Steven is committed to a TV show, that kind of affects the rest of us. We’d like to plan our lives, ya know?”

The relationship between Tyler and the rest of Aerosmith has been a strained one of late, and earlier this year there were rumors that the band were looking for a new vocalist. What’s your opinion of this latest kink in the ‘Smith’s saga? And do you think Tyler would made a good Idol judge?

Taylor Swift's brand-new song 'Mine': Hear it now

Filed under: News and tagged: , , ,

Taylor-SwiftImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosThere is no rest for the wicked—nor for those merely possessing of wickedly split-endless amber waves, approximately eleventy million platinum records, and a Jenga-like stack of golden trophies that Kanye can never take away.

Which is to say: Yes, Taylor Swift is back. The ringleted czarina of country-pop crossover has just dropped the first single from her upcoming Speak Now, and while it won’t go to iTunes until August 16, several websites have it streaming already, including this one.

As per several previous hits, “Mine” follows the narrative arc of young love blossoming—in this specific case, young college love. (Though 20-year-old Swift is, as of yet, only a student at the University of Superstar, at which she already appears to have picked up her honorary Masters).

So–the world’s first taste of Speak-era Taylor has arrived, and it sounds very much like we expected: just like Fearless-era Taylor, maybe a little older and wiser, but still as peachy-sweet as ever. What do you think, Swifties?

Soul throwbacks Fitz and the Tantrums: The Music Mix recommends

FTT-PiperFergusonImage Credit: Piper FergusonIt’s been a good few years for you-so-sax-y funk-soul revivalism (see also: Aloe Blacc, Jamie Lidell, Mayer Hawthorne, et al), and L.A. sextet Fitz and the Tantrums are riding the analog wave quite nicely; they were roundly lauded at SXSW this past March, and have already opened on tours for both Maroon 5 and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.

Now, the band is prepping for the release of sophomore outing Pickin’ Up the Pieces (due August 24 on Dangerbird, also home to Silversun Pickups and Bad Veins). But for you, Music Mixers, we have an early listen, in the form an exclusive song stream. Hear “L.O.V.” below: READ FULL STORY »

Miranda Lambert's new video for 'Only Prettier' features some major country girl-power

Miranda-LambertNow that Miranda Lambert is finally getting some much-deserved commercial recognition, it looks like her label is a bit more willing to put some money into her music videos. She’s come a long way since “Me and Charlie Talking.” Yesterday, Lambert dropped a 1950s-inspired video for her latest single, “Only Prettier,” which features some of the sharp-mouthed singer’s best girl friends. In the clip are fellow country stars Kellie Pickler, Laura Bell Bundy, and Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott, and the four gals cheekily portray two different cliques of friends at a school dance.

You’ve got the chain-smoking, gum-smacking bad girls, and the poodle-skirted, giggly squares. Though the groups shoot daggers across the dance floor all night, as the lyrics suggest, they actually “have got a lot a common.” They just need a little spiked punch to realize it. Watching the singers dress up and poke fun at themselves is pure fun (Kellie Pickler is especially funny), and I’m glad to see these women treat each other as comrades, rather than competition. Part of what makes country music is great is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and this video is no exception. Watch it after the jump: READ FULL STORY »
