Terry Gilliam talks about directing tomorrow's Arcade Fire live webcast: 'I'm trying to find out what this f--ing thing is!'

Aracde-Fire-Terry-GilliamImage Credit: Kevin Westenberg; Inset: Tony Lowe/PR PhotosThe recent announcement that the Arcade Fire had recruited Terry Gilliam to direct tomorrow night’s concert webcast from Madison Square Garden prompted much head scratching at EW Towers. Just what was the maker of such films as Brazil and 12 Monkeys going to bring to the live broadcast format, creatively-speaking? It turns out, Gilliam was wondering exactly the same thing and, with only a day to go before showtime, the jovial auteur says he remains a tad confused about his role in proceedings.

“I’m trying to find out what this f—ing thing is,” admits the director and Monty Python comedy team member. “I keep reading that I’m directing this thing, but I’m not sure that’s what I’m doing. Their manager called my agent less than two weeks ago and said, ‘We’re doing this webcast and the band would love it if you got involved.’ [Tonight's MSG show] will be the fourth that I’ve been with them. I’m a groupie, basically! If I see somebody doing something stupid I’ll probably mention that to them. But their show’s really good, and they’ve got really good video stuff already. So we’ll stick with what they’re doing and I can sit back and take credit for everything.”

One thing Gilliam con confirm is that he is a big fan of the Canadian outfit: “I do think they’re very special. I’ve felt that since Funeral.” That admiration is apparently reciprocated by band members, and married couple, Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. “Win said something to the effect that the first movie they ever saw together was Brazil,” reveals the director. “It’s a good way of finding out if your date is going to be part of your future! When Brazil came out I remember some married couples practically splitting over it. One would like it and the other would just despise the film.” Gilliam says he is regarding the webcast gig as an extended “date” during which he and the band can get to know each other, with an eye on collaborating properly at a later point. “It’s really about seeing if there’s a future between them and me,” muses the director.

Of course, Gilliam is infamous for the disasters that tend to befall his movies: “Me? What?” he deadpans when the subject is raised. But the director says that fans attending tomorrow night’s show at MSG need not worry about the possibility of an earthquake, or some freakish indoor monsoon, ruining their evening’s entertainment. “That’s why I’m staying as far away from this as possible,” he chuckles. “I’m literally hands-off. The Curse of Gilliam will not apply tomorrow night!”

The live stream of the show—part of the American Express-sponsored Unstaged series—will start tomorrow at 10pm EST, while a special pre-show will begin at 9:30. Are you going to tomorrow’s Arcade Fire show? Or will you be watching the webcast? What do you think of Mr Gilliam’s “involvement”? Let us know!

Eva Mendes sings! Hear the 'Other Guys' actress duet on 'Pimps Don't Cry' with Cee-Lo Green

eva-mendes-cee-loImage Credit: Tristan Gregory/Camera Press/Retna Ltd; Scott D. Smith/Retna LtdWatch your bony back, Gwyneth—there’s another singing actress at the rodeo, and she’s ready to “Pimp”-slap your “Country Strong” to the ground.

I kid! There’s room for more than one poreless movie star in the recording booth, of course. And they won’t exactly be competing for the same chunk of the music market with their respective songs; Eva Mendes, who will star as Will Ferrell’s hot-doctor wife in this weekend’s cop-buddy comedy The Other Guys, has made her own decidedly un-twangy contribution to the film’s soundtrack, with rapper/soul man/50% Gnarls Barkley-ian Cee Lo Green, and NYmag.com has it streaming here.

Fans of Shaft-style slow jams, hot Latina thespians, and men in fuchsia fun-fur coats who sell womens’ bodies for money while remaining proudly tear-free (yay for that Venn diagram!) will likely enjoy “Pimps Don’t Cry”; so, probably, will people who think comedy is funny.

But you tell us, readers, in the comments section below. Better than her sex tape?

Kings of Leon release new album details

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

kings-of-LeonPlatinum-selling Tennessee rockers Kings of Leon have announced details of their fifth album, the follow-up to their hugely successful 2008 CD Only by the Night. The quartet’s new CD is called Come Around Sundown, and will be released on October 19. The album was recorded in New York and produced by Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King, who also oversaw the band’s previous collection.

Since the release of Only by the Night the Followills have become genuine superstars—even if certain of our avian friends haven’t been showing them much respect of late. Are you excited for Come Around Sundown?

Lil Wayne debuts new single 'Right Above It,' calls radio station from jail

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

lil-wayneImage Credit: Jonathan MannionLast night incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne did his first interview since he entered New York’s Rikers Island last March. Phoning New York’s Hot 97 radio DJ Funkmaster Flex from jail, Wayne ran through his daily routine (“I call my my mother, my kids. You know I’ve got a lot of kids to call”) and promoted his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being EP. “It’s going to drop before Tha Carter IV, only on the internet,” Wayne said. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” The EP hits e-waves on his birthday, September 27.

Shortly after, rival station Power 105.1 debuted the EP’s lead single, “Right Above It.” The triumphant cut features hip-hop prince Drake. It’s not new territory for Wayne lyrically: He raps about women, cash, and loyalty. For avid fans, it will likely just tide them over until he’s released from jail this October to create a fresh batch of music. You can give it a listen here. The radio rip is all that’s available for now. So pardon DJ Clue’s obnoxious drops.

What do you think of Wayne’s new song? Are you anxious for his EP’s pending release?

Lollapalooza gets a food upgrade from 'MasterChef' Graham Elliot: A Music Mix Q&A

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Lollapalooza takes over Chicago’s Grant Park this weekend for three days of rock n’ roll, but to make it all the way to the headlining sets from acts like Lady Gaga, Soundgarden, Green Day and the Strokes, you gotta eat. Celebrity chef (and Chicago resident) Graham Elliot — who’s currently starring on Fox’s MasterChef alongside Gordon Ramsay — was enlisted to bump up the food choices for those in attendance, pulling together 30 local restaurants to offer something to the concertgoers that goes beyond the usual pizza and corn dogs. For example: lobster corn dogs. And you thought Gaga’s outfits made you drool.

Entertainment Weekly: You’re in charge of Chow Town at Lollapalooza this summer. I came to Lolla a few years ago, but I don’t know what that is.
Graham Elliot: Chow Town is the food court area, all the different little booths. And what we did this year, instead of having slices of pizza, things like that, we decided to bump it up a little and ask a bunch of our restaurant friends who we thought had the same artistic approach as the music scene, and have them come and contribute three dishes each to the Lolla food experience. So what you have is 30 restaurants total, that are all independent and food driven, doing dishes to raise the level of dining at the festival.

What does it mean for a restaurant to share the same artistic approach as the musicians?
People who look at cooking and food as a creative outlet, as opposed to just a craft or a way to make a paycheck. There’s a lot of similarities between music and food, and I think what you have are more free-spirited chefs, who put out food that’s provocative, and really creative and delicious, and who really love music. They play it in the kitchens, they play it in the dining room, they make their own playlists. It’s not just the smooth jazz that your dad listens to. It makes sense to put them together. Katy Perry's topless 'Rolling Stone' photo shoot: Yay or yawn?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

rolling-stone-katy-perry-coverAnother day, another scantily-clad female musician on the cover of the Rolling Stone. Just as we’ve finished debating Lady Gaga’s latest nudie pics for Vanity Fair, here comes Katy Perry posing for Mark Seliger in an array of bikinis and bras and birthday suits. While her pink lingerie is no whipped-cream-gun boobie apparatus, it’s not exactly Amish, either.

Perry’s never shied away from the provocative pin-up imagery, but it was pretty apparent to me during our sit-down for this year’s Summer Music Preview that she’s a tomboy at heart, and she’s got a lot more going on upstairs than a couple nice pieces of fruit. In her RS interview, she discusses her tendency to egosurf – ”Any artist who says they don’t Google their name is a big fat liar,” she tells the mag — so you can’t say there’s a lack of self-awareness at fault. I guess it’s all part of the master branding plan. But she’s a savvy songwriter with a good handle on marketing and promotion, so why always with the sexyface instead of the smartface?

What do you think about the pictures, Mixers? Lovely and intriguing, or have your eyes started to glaze over from all the famous skin out there?

MTV’s VMA nominations: Five surprise winners and losers

vma-nominationsGetting worked up over this year’s just-announced MTV Video Music Award nominations is kind of like being mad at the WWE for not honoring the traditions of Greco-Roman wrestling; it is what it is, kids. And what it is in 2010 is pretty much The Gaga Sweeps Show.

Meaning, essentially, that just about anyone who is not the thirteen-times-nominated Lady is a tramp. As in hobo. As in sad clown who will be going home with no Moon Men—or at least not great gobby handfuls of them, as Gaga is nearly guaranteed to do. (One possible exception? Eminem. Mr. Mathers snagged eight noms altogether, and will undoubtedly win several; MTV loves a comeback kid).

Even if la Gaga has single-handed saved both the music industry and the production of ash-colored Lady Godiva wigs, it is lovely to see a little attention paid to women who weren’t born Stefani Germanotta—including Florence and the Machine, Nicki Minaj (though for the wrong song), and Janelle Monae. And Dan Black, you kill it with that GarageBand “Umbrella” beat! Twice!

But we digress: Odd and unreflective of other industry awards shows as the VMAs may be, there are still a few shockers in today’s announcement; below, a (very subjective) top five: READ FULL STORY »

keshaKe$ha can’t wait to get to the club in her video for “Take It Off.” Set outside of some old motels, the 23-year-old’s latest clip finds her and some friends grooving their way into a decrepit, empty pool . “There’s a place downtown where the freaks all come around,” she sings on the chorus. “It’s a hole in the wall. It’s a dirty free-for-all.” Like her video for “Your Love is My Drug,” this is a pretty trippy showing. Check out the video after the jump and let us know what you think.

She is also the first female artist to be nominated for two different clips in the Video of the Year category with both “Bad Romance” and “Telephone” getting nods. First-time VMA nominees included Ke$ha, Drake, Florence + The Machine, and young Mr Justin Bieber.

The VMAs will be broadcast on Sunday, September 12. You can find the list of nominees after the jump.
