Cee Lo Green tells us all about his viral hit 'F--- You,' his new album, and the future of Gnarls Barkley and Goodie Mob

Cee-Lo-greenWatching his single “F—- You” become a runaway viral hit within days of its online release has been “pretty magical” for Cee Lo Green. “It’s a pleasant surprise, I must say,” the singer tells the Music Mix via phone from London. “I think it’s totally surpassed just about everyone’s expectations. We had a clue — I mean, it’s a very noticeable song — but this has been extraordinary.”

“F—- You” was born almost two years into the recording of Cee Lo’s third solo album, The Lady Killer, which is now due Dec. 7.  During a session in L.A. with hitmakers Bruno Mars and Phil Lawrence (B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You,” Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire”), they let him hear a rough sketch of a song they weren’t sure was worth completing. “When Bruno first sung ‘F—- You’ to me, they were still a bit indecisive on whether or not it could work at all,” he says. “I was like, ‘I like it. Let’s record it.’”

Finishing the song became “a collective effort,” with Cee Lo contributing many of the verse lyrics that surround that unforgettably risque hook. As heartfelt as Cee Lo’s crooning sounds, his tale of being jilted for a Ferrari-driving slickster wasn’t strictly autobiographical. “I mean, it’s based on something true… As far as me personally, it’s not a current event. It’s a figurative account. It’s not completely fictitious, though.”

With “F—- You” continuing to gain speed online, Cee Lo and his team are scrambling to keep up. The dancing-words clip that’s racked up 1.7 million YouTube plays so far is just a place-holder, he says; a proper video is coming soon, but the singer coyly refuses to divulge any details about it. He’s also recorded a profanity-free radio edit to help the song’s chances of getting on the air. “It’s called ‘Forget You,’” he says. “It’s pretty close to the original, but not as effective. But it’s politically correct.” And while he had no part in creating 50 Cent’s witty remix, Cee Lo is a fan. “It was flattering that he would take the liberty of joining in so quickly,” he says. “I thought it was really cool.” READ FULL STORY »

'80s synth-pop icons OMD return, sample classic Aretha Franklin on 'Save Me': A Music Mix exclusive stream

OMD-Aretha-FranklinImage Credit: A. Gilbert/PR PhotosNearly 25 years after they crooned Molly Ringwald into prom-wish-fulfillment bliss in Pretty in Pink’s cold-shouldered satin, British synth-poppers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, a.k.a. OMD, have returned.

September 28th’s History of Modern will be their first studio album since 1996′s Universal, and the first in over two decades to feature the group’s original ’80s lineup.

To celebrate, the band has reached even further back to borrow Aretha Franklin’s soul plea “Save Me” from her classic 1967 album I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, and spun it right ’round their own dance-pop Cuisinart.

'What A Wonderful World' songwriter George David Weiss dies at age 89

George-David-WeissImage Credit: songwritershalloffame.orgSongwriter George Davis Weiss, who penned such classic tunes as “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and “What a Wonderful World,” died yesterday at his home in New Jersey, according to the New York Times.

“What a Wonderful World”—which the Manhattan-born Weiss co-wrote with producer Bob Thiele—was originally offered to Tony Bennett, who turned it down. It was then sent to Louis Armstrong who would make the track his signature song.

For “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” Weiss reworked an old song called “Mbube,” originally penned by South African musician Solomon Linda. “I did some research and found out that the chant was connected to the lion,” Weiss recalled in 1995. “So I began to think and I came up with the notion that the darn lion was sleeping tonight and nobody had to worry. And I incorporated the chant into the song and wrote some melodies and counter melodies.” The track was a hit for the Tokens in 1961 and would subsequently be recorded by Robert John, Brian Eno, and the Nylons, amongst others. It would also feature in both the film and stage versions of The Lion King. “The song leads a magical life,” Weiss said in 1995. “I don’t know what to think about it. I never thought of it as a song, but rather as a series of gimmicks thrown together. It just shows you—you can’t second guess the public.”

50 Cent remixes Cee-Lo's 'F--- You': Watch the funny video here

f-you-50-cent-remixImage Credit: Koi Sojer/PR PhotosWell, that was fast. Just days after the great Cee-Lo Green released his awesomely catchy “F— You,” that irrepressible jokester 50 Cent has issued a response video. In his remix, he naturally takes on the role of the rich guy who stole Cee-Lo’s lady with his flashy red Ferrari. It’s just one quick verse tacked on to the original song, but it’s pretty funny.

50 Cent even had a video made for his remix. Take a look after the jump (clip via Miss Info; lots of NSFW language, obviously). How do you like it? Any other recent songs you’d like to see 50 apply his sense of humor to? READ FULL STORY »

kanye-west-santaImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosTime to clear some space on your iPod: Every single Friday from now ’til Dec. 25, Kanye West will be liberating a brand-new song by himself or one of his close friends. He announced the plan in a series of tweets yesterday.

“Swizz [Beatz] looked at me the other night and said man are you getting sleep and I told him I can’t sleep… My people need this new music,” he wrote. “I know yall need the music so I’m dropping 1 new song every weekend until Xmas. Lady Gaga is Queen of Twitter: Sorry, Britney!

Categories: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has a lot of followers on Twitter — the most in the world, in fact. Until very recently this title was held by Britney Spears, but Gaga’s follower count has finally surpassed hers. How symbolic! As of this writing, Lady Gaga has 5,741,164 followers, while Spears can only boast a trifling 5,703,531.

Lady Gaga celebrated her historic achievement with an amusing YouTube clip “sent while changing backstage at The Monster Ball in Tacoma.” Take a look at the benevolent Queen of Twitter’s message to all her loyal subjects after the jump. Do you follow either Gaga or Spears? How long do you think Gaga’s record will hold out? READ FULL STORY »

Lauryn Hill plays Rock the Bells festival: Is she back for good?

LAURYN-HILLImage Credit: Brendon Thorne/Getty ImagesWhen Lauryn Hill gives a live performance as well-received as the one she did at the Rock the Bells tour’s Aug. 21 stop in San Bernardino, Calif., it’s worth paying attention. It’s not that she’s never given concerts over the past decade. (Pictured to your left is her performance this January at Sydney, Australia’s Raggamuffin Festival.) But since Hill’s de facto retirement, fairly or not, it’s often been said that her live act has become inconsistent, unreliable, not what it once was. Consider her Rock the Bells performance this weekend a major piece of evidence against that theory.

Hill joined a dream team of rap legends in San Bernardino. Snoop Dogg, Slick Rick, the Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, and others each performed one of their best-loved albums start to finish. Hill only has one solo studio album to her name, of course, but she didn’t stick to that limitation, performing a selection of Fugees and solo hits. MTV News’ on-the-scene report makes it sound like a pretty great set list, including sped-up versions of “Lost Ones,” “Doo Wop (That Thing),” “To Zion,” “Ready or Not,” and “Fu-Gee-La.” “This was not a woman who some reports had labeled ‘crazy,’” writes MTV’s Shaheem Reid. “Lauryn was lucid and dancing and appeared to be enjoying herself.”

One solid concert doesn’t necessarily mean Lauryn Hill is ready to return to public life full-time. The same goes for the recent Billboard debut of ”Repercussions,” a leaked tune of indeterminate age whose No. 94 spot on the Hot 100 marked the first time she’d been on that chart as a lead artist since 1999. Still, it’s hard not to see these as good signs. Let’s hope this latest flurry of news heralds a major comeback, complete with new music worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill or even her underrated MTV Unplugged set.

After the jump, check out an extremely shaky video of Hill rocking “Lost Ones” (clip via Rap Radar). Were you at this show? How was it? Are you ready for Lauryn Hill to come back? READ FULL STORY »

British singer Charles Haddon apparently commits suicide at rock festival

Categories: In Memoriam

Ou-Swimming-Pool_240.jpg Image Credit: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage.comCharles Haddon, frontman of the British elecro-pop band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, apparently killed himself on Friday at Belgium’s Pukkelpop Festival by leaping from a telecommunications mast, according to the Associated Press. The singer was 22. District attorney Marc Rubens said the police are treating Haddon’s death as a suicide.

A message has been posted on the Pukkelpop official blog which confirms that, “After performing with his band ‘Ou est le swimming pool’, singer Charles Haddon decided to take his own life. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

According to the NME, earlier today La Roux singer Elly Jackson dedicated the band’s set at Britain’s V Festival to Haddon. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool played shows with La Roux last year.

Haddon’s death is the second apparent suicide at a rock show this week. During the Swell Season’s concert in Saratoga on Thursday, a man died when he jumped from a roof and fell approximately three stories to the stage.

Wyclef Jean issues statement about Haiti presidency disqualification

Categories: Wyclef Jean

Wyclef-Haiti-elections_320.jpg Image Credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images Wyclef Jean has issued a statement about the Haiti board of elections’ decision not to allow him to run for presidency of the country.

“It is with a heavy heart that I tell you today that the board of elections in Haiti has disqualified me from my run for the presidency of the country,” said the Fugees star in the statement. “Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee’s final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same. We must all honor the memories of those we’ve lost—whether in the earthquake, or at anytime—by responding peacefully and responsibly to this disappointment. I was inspired to run for president because I know Haiti can become great with the right leadership, and I believe I could be that leader; but, ultimately, we must respect the rule of law in order for our island to become the great nation we all aspire for it to be.”

Haiti’s electoral council announced yesterday that the Haitian-born pop star was disqualified from running. The board did not give a reason, but Wyclef clearly believes the problem was the requirement that candidates must have lived in Haiti for five consecutive years. In his statement, Wyclef said that “though the board has determined that I am not a resident of Haiti, home is where the heart is—and my heart has and will always be in Haiti.”
