Drake and Lil Wayne start fires in their 'Miss Me' video: Watch it here

Lil Wayne has a few months left on Rikers Island, but plans are already in the works for a concert to celebrate when he gets out this fall. That’s per his Young Money pal Drake, who told viewers of his webcast last night to look forward to a “Welcome Home Weezy” show on Nov. 5, the day after Wayne’s expected release. Drake also just debuted a video for his song “Miss Me,” and through the magic of video editing, the incarcerated Wayne was able to co-star.

The Anthony Mandler-directed “Miss Me” clip opens with a disorienting collage of imagery over a moody ambient soundtrack. Most of those images recur once the proper song begins. Fireworks explode and a lady in lingerie gyrates as Drake raps, flashing goofy grins and grouchy scowls all the while. At one point, Drake hurls a Molotov cocktail at a brick wall. When it explodes, Lil Wayne is released in the form of a spectral hologram. This eerie Wayne genie then kicks a guest verse, with Drake mouthing along to his lyrics.

Check out the clip after the jump (some NSFW language). Like it? Do you miss Wayne terribly, or are clips like this tiding you over? READ FULL STORY »

Steven Tyler's pal Tommy Lee says the Aerosmith singer would 'Kill it' as an 'American Idol' judge (as long as he didn't fall off the stage)

jones-tylerImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; PRN/PR PhotosTommy Lee dropped in to EW Towers this morning to talk about his new Methods of Mayhem CD, A Public Disservice Announcement (of which, more in due course). But we couldn’t let the Mötley Crüe skinsman leave without asking whether he had an opinion about the possibility of his fellow rocker Steven Tyler becoming a judge on American Idol. Turns out, he did.

“I know him really well, and he’ll f—ing kill it,” said Lee, who was himself a judge on the 2006 reality show Rock Star: Supernova. “Look, you’re judging karaoke—you don’t need to be a really super experienced judge for that. But it’s nice to have an actual musician in there. He’s fun, and he’ll keep the show exciting too. He’s a good guy for that, I think.”

One possible problem? Tyler would find it hard to criticize anyone who fell off the Idol stage, given his own recent habit of doing exactly that.

“He just fell off the stage,” laughed Lee. “I was watching  the news. I was like, is that from the other time, or is this a new one?”

Do you think Steven Tyler—or, for that matter, Tommy Lee—would be a good American Idol judge?

Cee-Lo Green's must-hear new song 'F--- You': Listen (and watch) here

Categories: Cee-Lo, New Stuff, R&B, Soul

Cee-Lo Green’s new jam “F— You” is beyond fantastic. The neo-Motown style is a hilarious contrast to the really, really salty language and creative lyrics (“I guess he’s an Xbox, and I’m an Atari”). Enjoy, but again, very very NSFW language and visuals: READ FULL STORY »

Eminem's freestyle battle contest heads to the finals in Detroit

Categories: Eminem, Hip-Hop/Rap

eminemImage Credit: Johnny Nunez/WireImage.comAll summer long, Eminem and his cronies have been criss-crossing the country looking for the best unknown freestyle rappers at a series of audition events. Now it’s time to crown a victor. The finals of the awkwardly titled Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile contest will take place in Eminem’s hometown of Detroit on Aug. 26, next Thursday. Em himself will judge the finalists’ improvised rhymes.

Eminem first got the music industry’s attention by placing well at an organized freestyle competition in 1997. Before that, of course, he cut his teeth at local battles like the ones dramatized in 8 Mile. It’s cool that he’s bringing that tradition full circle and giving some new rappers a chance to shine. That’s especially true these days, when the word “freestyle” hardly means what it used to — respected artists regularly “freestyle” during radio appearances by reading pre-written rhymes off of their BlackBerries, a dubious practice that I have to assume won’t fly here.

Have you been at any of the EmSee events? Rooting for anyone in the finals? Let us know.

Rapper T.I. debuts Magnum, T.I. role in hilarious Jimmy Kimmel sketch: Watch here

magnum-tiImage Credit: ABCAtlanta rapper T.I. paid a visit to Jimmy Kimmel‘s late-night show yesterday to promote his latest movie, Takers. Before bringing T.I. out Kimmel spoke about how busy the artist is–noting that he’s also got an album on the way. And he added that, “He has a new TV show premiering this fall on CBS, I think. It’s a remake of an old show. But with a younger, hipper, more urban twist. Check it out.”

Then came the classic theme song and intro to classic 80′s action drama Magnum, P.I. In a Hawaiian tee shirt, T.I. played Tom Selleck’s role as private investigator Thomas Magnum–mustache and all. For someone who’s known to be too cool for such a skit, T.I. provides some side-splitting humor here. Give it a look after the jump.

The Swell Season: Man dies in apparent suicide at Saratoga show

Categories:

swell-seasonImage Credit: Conor MastersonLast night, a man apparently committed suicide at a Swell Season concert in Saratoga, according to SF Weekly. The man jumped from a roof and fell approximately three stories to the stage, landing just a few feet away from singer Glen Hansard.

“At first, we thought it was a [prank] or part of the lighting, but after seeing the horrible shock on Glenn’s face, we realized it was something very serious,” said one eyewitness. “He came out of nowhere. The staff acted quickly and tried to resuscitate the man, but to no avail.

Madonna sued over 'Material Girl' clothing line

Categories: Legal Troubles, Madonna

MadonnaImage Credit: Stephen Lovekin/Getty ImagesMadonna is being sued by a clothing company that claims she’s ripping off the name of their “Material Girl” juniors line. In papers filed yesterday with a U.S. District Court in California, L.A. Triumph says that it and a previous company have been selling a “Material Girl” line of clothes for young women in department stores around the country since 1997. Madonna and her daughter Lourdes launched their own line, also called “Material Girl,” just this month.

L.A. Triumph is asking the court to stop Madonna from using the “Material Girl” name and make her hand over any profits she’s made with it. My non-legal-expert self feels compelled to note that L.A. Triumph’s line was almost certainly named after a Madonna song in the first place, but that may or may not have anything to do with the legal issue here.

Madonna’s rep has not responded to EW’s request for comment. In a statement provided to EW, L.A. Triumph’s lawyers say the suit “is necessary to protect L.A. Triumph’s valuable intellectual property rights before its brand is irreparably subsumed by Madonna’s new Material Girl line.”

What do you think of this story? The comments section awaits.

Kanye West and Jay-Z revive Taylor Swift drama, get political on 'Power' remix

jayz-kanyeImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comOh, you thought Kanye West sounded confrontational on his single “Power”? Wait ’til you hear the official remix he and big bro Jay-Z dropped on NYC’s Hot 97 radio last night. It feels like rap heads have been waiting for this remix all summer, and Jay and ‘Ye don’t disappoint, turning the intensity of the original tune all the way up.

“Rumble, young man, rumble,” Jay-Z advises his controversy-prone protégé in his tightly coiled opening verse. He’s actually the one who gets rumbling first: “F— all these labels, f— what everybody wants from you/They trying to Axl Rose you, ‘Welcome to the Jungle’/To be continued, we on that Norman Mailer s—/In search of the truth, even if it goes through Taylor Swift/Tell her this!” Yeah, he went there. Jay-Z isn’t really dissing or insulting Swift per se, but just hearing him call someone out by name in his music is rare enough to make this a rewind-worthy moment. READ FULL STORY »

Chelsea Handler to unite Kanye West and Taylor Swift at VMAs?

Categories: Kanye West, Taylor Swift

chelsea-kanye-taylorImage Credit: Steve Snowden/Getty Images; Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagicLate-night show personality and bestselling author Chelsea Handler hopes to bring pop starlet Taylor Swift and outspoken rhymer Kanye West together when she hosts this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Since Kanye interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech last year, the two haven’t been around each other–mostly because West went on hiatus, opting not to attend illustrious events like the Grammys. But now that he’s back and a performer at the forthcoming awards, Handler wants to change that.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his On-Air radio show yesterday to promote the event, Handler said, “I’d like to get them [Swift and West] together. Because you’ve never really seen them together since then. They were supposed to be on SNL, but then that didn’t end up happening. I don’t know. We’ll try and think of something clever to do with them, because that would be really fun. Everyone loves Taylor Swift, and Kanye’s Kanye.”

(Swift’s publicist declined to comment on the potential VMAs team-up, and West’s rep could not be reached immediately.)

Both artists have addressed last year’s incident in interviews and seemingly have moved on since. It may be a good idea for them to come together and laugh about it all. But I doubt they will. Kanye has much more to gain in the court of public opinion than Taylor does. Even though she’d come off pretty cool if she did.

What you think? Should Taylor hook up with Kanye for a funny skit or something of the sort? Let us know.

Wyclef Jean awaits Haitian ruling on run for president

wyclef-jeanImage Credit: Frederic Dupoux/Getty ImagesHaitian-American singer Wyclef Jean should learn today whether he will be on the ballot for the presidential election in Haiti. Jean insists that he is eligible to run for president of his earthquake-ravaged homeland even while Reuters reported that officials said that the ex-Fugee did not meet the electoral qualifications and was not on the list of candidates. Jean responded last night by calling in to Larry King Live (video embedded below), denying that he would be excluded from the race and also confirming he’s received extensive death threats.
