Justin Bieber and Kanye West possibly to record together: Good idea?

kanye-bieberImage Credit: Kevin Knight/Retna Ltd; Scott Legato/FilmMagicJustin Bieber. Kanye West. Raekwon the Chef. Those might not be three names you ever expected to read in the same sentence. Thanks to Twitter, they seem to be well on their way to forming one of the strangest supergroups in recent memory.

MTV News has a good run-down of how the teen-pop whiz, the cutting-edge rap genius, and the rugged Wu-Tang Clan vet linked up. It all started when Kanye voiced his appreciation for Bieber’s “Runaway Love” on Twitter this past Sunday. Mr. Biebs was duly psyched about this shout-out, and said as much. “So bugged out me and @JustinBieber are tweeting at the same time,” West then reflected. “Social networking is pretty awesome.” West followed this thought with a boldly random suggestion: “Maybe we can do something together. Me, You and Raekwon.” Bieber’s reply: “me, u, and the chef 2gether on a song = EPIC. haha.”

Celeb lovefests on Twitter are a dime a dozen, but Raekwon told XXL last night that a real plan for the trio to record together was already in motion. “It’s definitely gonna happen,” promised Rae. “Yeezy called me and we gon’ make it pop.” Mere minutes ago, Raekwon elaborated on his own Twitter account: “On my way to the airport to nyc to get up wit my legendary @kanyewest! Yall asked for it now we’re gonna deliver!”

We’ll update you as soon as any more solid info emerges. ‘Til then, is this a collaboration you’d like to hear? Are there any people out there who consider themselves fans of both Justin Bieber and Raekwon?

Rapper Wale proves he will not lose with a stellar show at New York’s Highline Ballroom

WaleImage Credit: Erika Goldring/Retna LtdIf success in the music business is strictly based on albums sales and radio play, Wale is a failure. In 2008 the witty rhymer and Washington, D.C. native was riding high off the success of his Mixtape About Nothing, a charming set created around samples from NBC’s classic sitcom Seinfeld.

With a critically acclaimed mixtape in hand, Wale seemed set, and anticipation built for his debut album, Attention Deficit. Though critics generally adored it, oddly enough, fans didn’t pay attention when it came out last winter. The effort led by its Lady Gaga-assisted single sold a measly 28,000 copies in its first week.

But rather than sulk in defeat, Wale regrouped. He dropped out of the limelight and even took a break from his frenetic Twitter updates to record new music. And the time away was well worth it. Two weeks ago, he returned with the follow-up to his Seinfeld-inspired tape, More About Nothing. Another stellar offering, the free tape has amassed more than 300,000 downloads. This explains how he accomplished such a feat last night (August 16), selling out New York’s Highline Ballroom with his A Show About Nothing, hosted by Rap Radar’s Elliott Wilson.

Clad in a Chicago Bulls fitted cap, a black polo shirt and jeans, the 25-year-old Wale arrived on stage as horns from D.C.’s premiere go-go band U.C.B. blared behind him. Wale opened with “The MC” from his latest tape, then followed with “Mirror” from his album. Ever the showman, he pulled two camera-wielding fans out of the crowd to record his performance from both sides of the stage. READ FULL STORY »

Gap Band founder and bassist Robert Wilson dies at age 53

Categories: In Memoriam, R&B

Robert-WilsonImage Credit: David Corio/Redferns/Getty ImagesBassist Robert Wilson, who founded legendary funk act the Gap Band with his brothers Charlie, and Ronnie, died Sunday in his Palmdale, Ca. home, according to Billboard. Wilson was 53.

The Tulsa-raised Wilson brothers began playing together in 1967, originally under the name of the Greenwood, Archer and Pine Street Band. In the early ’70s, they performed with Leon Russell, who produced their debut album Magician’s Holiday. In the ’80s, the Gap Band repeatedly hit the charts with such songs as “Early in the Morning,” “Party Train,” and “You Dropped a Bomb on Me.”

Famous Gap Band fans include Roots drummer Questlove, who yesterday wrote on Twitter, “my god… the youngest “Gap” Brother Robert Wilson passed away. he will be missed.”

You can hear “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” after the jump.

Cher exclusive: The superstar discusses her upcoming album

The amazing and iconic Cher is making a return to the big-screen this November in the sequin fever dream Burlesque, opposite fellow pop star Christina Aguilera. But the diva is also beginning to plot out her next album, which has her working with hitmaker Diane Warren (Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”; Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me”). Warren also wrote one of Cher’s two big Burlesque tunes, the big power ballad “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.”

The 64-year-old diva says that fans shouldn’t expect the same dance music heard on her 1998 album, Believe, which featured the titular blockbuster single. “It really won’t be Believe-ish,” she says. “It will be more…I don’t know how to say it. I can’t put a genre to it. It’s a little bit more real instruments, like guitars and stuff like that.” Don’t get too excited Cher fans: the singer admits she’s still very early in the recording process.

Says Cher, “I just got some of the songs and I’m just learning [them] so I’m kind of at that beginning stage where you’re taking baby steps.” Watch the full trailer for Burlesque below:

Are you excited for a new Cher album, Music Mix-ers? What kind of music would you like to hear her tackle?

Katy Perry crashes prom in Australia, sings along to 'California Gurls'

Katy-PerryImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosKaty Perry crashed a prom in Melbourne, Australia, last Friday and sang along to “California Gurls.” According to Radar, the prom was taking place at the Grand Hyatt, where Perry was staying, and the singer decided to attend the event after hearing her hit being played.

“As she grabbed the microphone, she was surrounded by highly excited students and began singing along,” said one student. “She was dancing and laughing with students until the end of the song. Everyone went nuts and it was the perfect ending to our evening.”

Perry later tweeted, “I totes just crashed a prom!!!”

50 Cent and Shyne trade zingers in the summer's most entertaining rap beef

50-cent-shyneImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR Photos; Andrew Savulich/NY Daily News Archive/Getty ImagesYou probably know 50 Cent as a rapper, actor, and businessman, but I think his truest gifts may lie in the phony phone-call field. Take his ongoing tiff with Shyne. The former Diddy protégé has been one of 50′s innumerable antagonists going back years, but things have really started heating up lately with Shyne’s release from prison. Last week, Shyne’s new label, Def Jam, organized a live webcast/conference call to aid with his halting comeback efforts. 50 Cent took this opportunity to call in under a fake name and prank Shyne.

You can watch 50′s edited version of the webcast exchange after the jump via Nah Right — be warned, there’s a ton of NSFW profanity and at least one cringe-inducing Mel Gibson quotation. Really, though, the questionable details of 50′s tirade aren’t the point. What makes this hilarious to me is the way 50 Cent consistently gets right up in his many enemies’ faces. No other artist of his stature would take the time to do this. Jay-Z, for instance, has spent the last 10 years studiously avoiding petty industry beefs whenever possible. 50 gleefully jumps headfirst into the mud every time. I can’t help chuckling at his antics, even when I know I shouldn’t. Axl Rose cancels Guns N' Roses tour via Twitter?

axl-roseImage Credit: Landmark/PR PhotosNo one ever quite knows what Axl Rose is going to do next — not even his own bandmates. The one-of-a-kind frontman posted a tersely worded note on Twitter yesterday (h/t Vulture): “All upcoming Guns N’ Roses dates are officially cancelled. Please contact your place of purchase for any refunds.” This came as a surprise to the official GNR Twitter account. “Well well well, you never can tell,” they sheepishly replied a couple of hours later. “We are looking into this tweet.”

Guns N’ Roses’ official site still lists a raft of upcoming dates across Europe, so you might want to hold on a sec before claiming that refund. We are, as they say, looking into it. UPDATE: Organizers of the U.K.’s Reading and Leeds Festivals issued a statement calling the cancellations mere “rumours”: “Festival Republic are informed by GN’R management that Guns N’ Roses have NOT cancelled their performances at Reading & Leeds and that Axl Rose’s Twitter account was hacked into and all claims of dates being cancelled are unfounded.”

‘Til any more solid information emerges, what do you think of this story? Were you planning to attend any of those GNR shows? Will you be disappointed if they’re really the latest milestone in this Summer of Sadness for the concert biz?

Nancy Wilson of Heart talks new album, old times, and being a rock 'n roll icon: A Music Mix Q&A

Categories: Q&A

HeartIn the 1970s, Heart—featuring wild-haired Seattle sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson—filled arenas with their muscular, commanding hard-rock anthems: “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” “Barracuda.” In the ’80s they did it again, albeit with a lot more AquaNet.

The ’90s and ’00s have been quieter, more focused on family and side projects like the Lovemongers and Nancy’s frequent soundtrack collaborations (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, and Vanilla Sky among them) with her husband, filmmaker Cameron Crowe.

This summer, however, Heart returns after a six-year hiatus with new album, Red Velvet Car, to be released August 31, and a tour to support it through late September. EW spoke to Nancy about coming up as one of the first (and finest) female guitarists in the testosterone world of stadium rock, working out the band’s new album, and who’s on her personal playlist.

EW: So before this interview, I was doing some research and ended up going on kind of a YouTube bender watching old Heart clips. Do you find yourself ever revisiting those, or have your kids [Wilson and Crowe are parents to ten-year-old twin boys] ferreted them out?

Nancy Wilson: You mean like a Heart marathon? My boys are ten, and they’ve seen a few things, but I don’t intentionally take them there [laughs]. It can be kind of embarrassing because of the hairdos and the kinds of fashion statements that we thought we needed to make in those various eras. I mean, was there ever enough hairspray? But the boys see a few things and they go, “Is that you?” and it’s kind of cute because it’s like “Yes, Mama has lived many lifetimes.” We started very, very young, and I was about 20 when our first album came out—that’s a lot of lives ago.

EW: When the Runaways movie was released earlier this year, so many people were dubbing it the story of the first female rock band. But even though your band was co-ed, I tend to think of Heart as one of the first true girl rock bands, because you didn’t have a Svengali-type figure like Kim Fowley…

NW: Well, there is a definite sound with all-girl bands, a good rudimentary sound, and that’s what’s cool and punk about all-girl bands, that you still find, largely—it’s really kind of primal. We’ve always been more …. weird compared to most bands, girls or no. We’re a pretty heavy rock band with an acoustic element, and I’m still trying to find one who compares, can you? [Laughs] So I guess we made our own category somehow.

EW: Did you feel like you had to fight a lot of sexism coming up, as women in hard rock, or did you feel that they welcomed you?

It was definitely about skill. Starting out, we were quite little and we had no perception of what boys and girls were supposed to do, so we were basically aimed like pistols, without a sexual reference to go to. Unlike other rock people who had every battle to win, we had parents who said “You’re good at this, you could probably do this.” I think in some ways that was because of Ann’s naturally incredible voice—she was just way off the scale talent-wise, which our parents recognized as a gift. [Later though] it was like The Wizard of Oz: “I’d turn back if I were you! Tigers and bears, oh my…” because it is not a path I would advise most people to go. READ FULL STORY »
