Rihanna at Madison Square Garden: The Barbadian star brings her army tank, Mickey Mouse ears, and catsuit to New York City

rihanna-concertImage Credit: Jamie McCarthy/WireImage.comNew York’s Madison Square Garden was flooded with kids for pop starlet Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth tour last night (August 12). And not “kids” as in teens, twenty-somethings, and tweens. I’m talking about children, little girls whose parents wouldn’t even think of allowing their little ones to strut out of their front doors in the kind outfits worn by the Thursday’s headliner.

It was an odd sight, peering over the arena and finding such an eclectic blend of youth: An eight-year-old girl with barrettes in her hair sitting next to a woman 17 years her elder, a flamboyant pair of men in blazers with jagged hairdos and cut-off denim shorts one row in front them. All were waiting intently for not only their sister in loud haircuts but also her stunningly grungy opening act, Ke$ha.

Looking as if she’d just dropped major dollars at a glam-rock garage sale, Ke$ha hit the stage in a tattered black Metallica t-shirt, super-short shorts, and leopard-print gloves. The 23-year-old started off with “Blah Blah Blah,” and couldn’t contain how excited she was to be playing at the historic venue.

“I cannot believe that I’m playing at the f***ing Garden,” she yelled. “Holy s***balls.”

“Party at a Rich Dude’s House” quickly switched to a jam about creepy old men, aptly titled “”Dinosaur.” Hers was a fun 30-minute set: Prancing around U.S. flags draped in Christmas lights along with her dancers, Ke$ha ran through all of the singles from her debut album, Animal. Like a wasted party girl at night’s end, she crawled the length of the stage for “Take It Off.” Her style (or lack thereof) is constantly attacked; what hardly is mentioned, though, is her talent. The Nashville native’s Cyndi Lauper-meets-the-Valley voice was a near-perfect match to her tracked records. She also briefly hopped on the keyboard and drums before closing out with her breakout smash, “Tik Tok.” Her time up, the main event was set to start. READ FULL STORY »

American Carnage: Slayer, Megadeth, and Testament thrash New Jersey

Categories: Concert Reviews, Metal

slayer-megadethImage Credit: Scott Legato/FilmMagic.com; Steve Thorne/Redferns/Getty ImagesLast night in New Jersey, a few folks in black t-shirts got together and pretended like grunge never happened. The American Carnage tour, which brings together Slayer, Megadeth, and Testament to relive the glory of old-school speed metal, came through the New York area last night. Slayer played their 1990 classic Seasons of the Abyss and Megadeth ran through 1990′s Rust in Peace, both in their entirety.

Sort of a second coming of each band’s last hurrah before alt-rock swept in and changed the hard-rock landscape. Metallica, who actually joined Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax for a show in Bulgaria earlier this year, would have fit right in on American Carnage if 1988′s …And Justice For All were only recorded two years later. The difference between Metallica and Slayer (and to a lesser extent Megadeth), of course, is that while Metallica cut off their hair, slapped on eyeliner, and recorded Bob Seger covers in response to alt-rock, Slayer is, and always has been effing SLAYER. No apologies, no compromise, no mercy.

That’s certainly what the freakishly dedicated fans at the Izod Center came to see. Is there such a thing as an ex-Slayer fan? You may have never liked Slayer. But anyone who ever did very likely did a lot, and almost certainly still does today. It’s a (Reign in) blood-in, (World Painted) blood-out fandom that last night attracted everyone from the teenage outcast who wasn’t even born when Seasons was released to the 50-year-old bald dude who threw on cargo shorts and a tattered Hell Awaits t-shirt and ran out of the office so quick he didn’t even have time to change out of his black dress socks. Michael Jackson and Nirvana come together in the YouTube mashup of the day: 'Smells like Rockin' Robin'

Here we are now, YouTube, entertain us! I was browsing my Twitter feed this morning when I stumbled upon this gem: Go Home Productions posted a mix of two fantastic (understatement) artists who might be gone, but will not be forgotten any time soon: Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and a then-13-year-old Michael Jackson’s “Rockin’ Robin.”

And now, thanks to the wonder of technology, we can enjoy BOTH songs at the same time. Color me excited. Watch the video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Ke$ha performs on 'Today': Did you 'wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy' with her?

keshaEveryone’s favorite singing trashbot Ke$ha took over New York’s Rockefeller Plaza this morning to perform a few of the songs from her album, Animal. I’ve been a big fan of Ke$ha since she hit the scene last winter (heck, I wrote the—ahem!—definitive EW piece on her back in January!), but I must say: Ke$ha is not the most exhilarating live entertainer, unfortunately. Or maybe she just tries too hard and it comes off as cloying? It’s strange, because her music is catchy and amps me up when I listen on my iPod, but today’s performances felt decidedly muted. (Much like her ill-fated, uninspiring Saturday Night Live performance back in April.) Just kind of run-of-the-mill, nothing special. For reals, even the (surprisingly small, compared to the masses who showed up recently for Gaga) crowd in Rockefeller seemed more likely to yawn than sing along to “Tik Tok” and “Take It Off.” And the interview portions of the whole (non) spectacle were zapped of juice, too—Matt Lauer honestly asked her about the $ in her name and the story about how she broke into Prince’s house to drop off a demo once. How pedestrian! Again, it was all in the—ahem!—definitive EW piece I wrote back in January!

Regardless, take a gander at the performances here and decide for yourself:

Jorge Garcia of 'Lost' on being the face of Weezer's new album: 'How awesome is that!'

weezer-hurleyEarlier this week, Lost fans roared with “Raditude” when they heard the news those impish pop-rockers in Weezer were going to call their new album Hurley and put Jorge Garcia’s warm and fuzzy mug on the cover. (Note: “Raditude” is the name of Weezer’s last album.) But of course, no one was more tickled by this news than Jorge Garcia himself. “How awesome is that! It totally put a smile on my face, to say the least,” the actor tells EW.com. “It ranks right up there with getting my own action figure.” (For the record, Garcia is indeed a Weezer fan. Favorite song? “I’m a huge fan of the opening riff of ‘Hash Pipe’,” says Garcia. “It’s like the theme song to Peter Gunn times 1000.”)

Here’s the backstory on how Garcia found himself becoming Weezer’s cover boy. The actor says he met Rivers Cuomo backstage at The George Lopez Show on May 12 while doing press for Lost. They talked for a bit, and then Cuomo asked Garcia if he could get a photo taken with him. “And then two months later,’ says the actor, “I get an email from my manager saying, ‘Listen, Weezer contacted us and they want you to be on the cover of their new CD.” Garcia was then shown what he thought was a rough draft mock-up of the cover using the photo he took with Cuomo, albeit blown up and cropped to showcase just Garcia’s face. “But it wasn’t a mock-up. They wanted to use that specific photo,” says Garcia. “I thought that was really cool.”

Asked what he was thinking and feeling in the moment that’s captured in the photo, Garcia says: “It was just surreal. It’s always surreal when people come up to you and tell you that they’re fans of the show. So it was really kinda cool that in this case it was Rivers, because I had listened to his songs for so many years. It was just so surprising. And then it was over before I knew it.”

Garcia says he hasn’t heard any of the songs on Hurley, which according to Rolling Stone has a 1960s pop rock vibe. He hopes to get a sneak listen of the disc before the album’s release on September 15. He also hopes it will be successful enough to go gold or platinum and merit “one of those special award versions of the record that they give you when you sell a bunch of copies. Because I want one! I really want one to hang on my wall with the rest of my Lost stuff.”

FYI, according to AltPress, here’s the track list for Hurley. I look forward to mining all of them for Lost theories–especially No. 5.

Kanye West to perform at MTV VMAs: How will it go down one year after TaylorGate?

Kanye-West-TaylorImage Credit: Gary Hershorn/ Reuters/ LandovWell, that was quick. Just as fast as Kanye West was ushered out of the building for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at last year’s VMAs, he’s back.

After months of backlash from his impromptu outburst, MTV has opened their arms and is hailing his forthcoming performance as a “triumphant return,” during which West will likely perform a selection from his  as-yet-untitled November album. The news will be a surprise to many who ideally would expect MTV to punish West for last year’s debacle. But hey, newsflash to all who didn’t know: There are no morals in entertainment. On the heels of releasing his groundbreaking “Power” clip (on MTV, by the way) and surprisingly premiering an unfinished Beyoncé-assisted track yesterday, Kanye’s comeback likely will bring in ridiculously high ratings.

When the awards air September 12 live from Los Angeles, we’ll certainly be tuned in. Swift, who’s also gearing up for the release of her Speak Now album and recently debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard hot 100 chart with the set’s first single “Mine,” probably will be in attendance.

Do you think Kanye will acknowledge last year’s gaff on stage? Since then, he’s personally apologized to the country-pop starlet. But do you expect him to do it again publicly? Do you think MTV will script a skit for the two to comedically act out? Oh, so many questions. Let us know what you think.

Soundtrack for new Spike Jonze film 'I'm Here' to feature Animal Collective, Flea, more

spike-jonze-animal-collectiveImage Credit: Jonze: Mark Von Holden/WireImage.comDid you hear that booming sound? That’s the sound of alt-star dark matter collapsing in on itself in a spasm of hipness so dense, it steals all the light from the universe—or at least, Echo Park.

We are speaking, of course, of the end of the Cathy comic strip.

Hilarity! Just kidding. Actually, music video director turned indie film auteur Spike Jonze has a new movie, and he’s corralled a host of Pitchfork-y friends to provide the soundtrack: Among them, Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells, Of Montreal, Girls, Squeak E. Clean (a.k.a. Jonze’s brother Sam Speigel), and newly formed super-trio the Lost Trees, featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, and the Sads‘ Aska Matsumiya.

Consequence of Sound is streaming the latter’s Nico-esque album-opening ballad here; find the full tracklisting after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Eminem tops Billboard hot 100 for fourth straight week, Taylor Swift's 'Mine' debuts big

eminem_swiftImage Credit: Swift: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty ImagesFor the fourth week in a row, Eminem’s Rihanna-featuring “Love they Way You Lie” holds the No. 1 spot on the Billboard hot 100. Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” reaches it’s highest point yet, rising a spot to No. 2. Taylor Swift’s first single from her forthcoming album Speak Now, “Mine,” snatches the No. 3 spot in its opening week.

Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” falls two rungs to No. 4, and her “Teenage Dream” does the same, sliding two spots to No. 9. Enrique Iglesias’ Pitbull-assisted “I Like It,” remains at No. 5. “Airplanes” by B.o.B. steps back to places to No. 6. Slipping one spot to No. 7 is Mike Posner’s “Cooler than Me.” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” moves up one spot to No. 8,  and Jason Derulo’s “Ridin’ Solo” rounds out the top 10.

Okay, prediction time. How long do you think it will take for Taylor Swift to reach No. 1? Or will Eminem and Rihanna’s collaboration continue its reign for weeks to come? Let us know.

Roger Waters gives his blessing to 'Another Brick in the Wall' rewrite

roger-waters-blurred-visionImage Credit: Waters: Matt Kent/WireImage.comPink Floyd bassist Roger Waters has given his blessing to a rewritten version of  “Another Brick in the Wall,” which Canadian band Blurred Vision released earlier this year, according to the AP.

The Toronto-based act is fronted by two Iranian-born brothers whose family fled the country after the 1979 revolution. The new version of the song features the line, “Hey, Ayatollah, leave those kids alone!”

In a statement, Waters said that he believes Blurred Vision were playing a vital part in “the resistance to a regime that is both repressive and brutal.” Waters himself is touring the Pink Floyd album The Wall—which contains the original version of “Brick”—this fall.

You can check out Blurred Vision’s version of the song after the jump. The band are donating half of the proceeds from the track to the human rights organization Amnesty International.
