Guns N' Roses: Axl Rose leaves stage at Irish show after bottles and 'unknown substances' are thrown at him

guns-n-rosesImage Credit: Munica Imbuseiro/Globo/Getty ImagesGuns N’ Roses walked off the stage at their show in Dublin, Ireland, last night after plastic bottles were thrown at the band, according to the BBC. Axl Rose halted the performance—which began nearly an hour late—during the intro to “Welcome to the Jungle.” “Here’s the deal,” the singer announced. “One more bottle and we go home.” Apparently, at least one more bottle was thrown from the audience, and the band departed the stage soon after. An hour later, Rose and crew returned and completed their set.

A joint statement was subsequently issued by the show’s promoters and the venue which apologized for the delayed start, but which also insisted that, “No artist should be subjected to missiles and unknown substances being thrown at them.” (FYI: If I was betting man—and I am—and a veteran of rowdy crowd-filled shows—which I also am—my guess would be that at least one of those unknown substances was urine.)

Axl Rose hasn’t had the happiest time during the band’s current run of shows across the Atlantic. On Sunday, the band played a curtailed set at the U.K.’s Leeds Festival, where they also began performing late.

“We would like to play a few more songs for you tonight,” Rose told the Leeds audience, according to the NME. “But someone is telling us the show’s over. This war ain’t over yet.” The singer subsequently told the crowd, “Be safe getting out of here. And for the problems with the promoters, f— you.”

You can check out fan footage from the Dublin show after the jump—be warned, it contains some salty language.

What do you think of Mr Rose’s behavior? And is the crowd really boo-ing the band in the clip, or just marking its love for Mr Burns from The Simpsons (I’ve also embedded video that hopefully makes sense of that comment after the jump).

Does Axl know the 80s are over? His career certainly is.

    • Holly

I feel sorry for Axl – those Lucky Charms really sting when they hit you, especially the little marshmallow bits.

    • Dario

Yeah, he’s so over. Just look at that small crowd. There were, what, three dozen people in the audience, maybe? Why even bother.

  • Kyle

Since the crowd was booing long before GNR left the stage, I would have expected them to start cheering when Axl and co. left. I guess there’s no pleasing some people…

    • UGH

      This is no longer Guns-n-Roses.
It is merely a coverband with the original singer.

  • Scott

As much as I dislike GnR and Axl in general, that’s a definite safety threat when people are throwing filled bottles, whether or not there’s urine in there. Have someone throw a water bottle at you from 10 feet away and see how you feel after that.

    • The Jackal

I agree, why would you go to a concert you paid money for and then throw things at the band you just paid to see.

      • Jules

If you’ve ever seen this band live you would know why. I saw them when Appetite for Destruction was popular and they came on stage more than an hour after the opening act finished. Axl was drunk and beligerent. People were streaming out of the place because they were so awful and he was shouting obscenities at them in the microphone as they left. It was pathetic. It was not, however, a waste of my money because the opening band was a then unknown group called Metallica. I am sure there is more to this story than GnR being the innocent victim.

      • Turbo

@Jules: Metallica was already an established band when GNR came into the scene.. Their Album “master of puppets” had already gone gold by the time appetite was released.. Also, it is well known that the only time these two bands ever shared the stage together, was in 1992, and both bands were co-headliners.. So try again with that cute story..

      • Einstein Disguised as Robin Hood

Axl Rose’s poor behavior is no excuse to engage in idiotic behavior of your own. When you shout obscenities at the band, the only people you are offending are the other people in the audience, who are also paying customers that did not pay for tickets so they could listen to you shout “F*&k you!” repeatedly at Axl Rose.

      • Kath

The concert you are talking about was the 1992 Use Your Illusion tour with Faith No More and Metallica. We walked out after GnR came on stage and did a drum solo that was awful. Metallica kiced ass though!

      • Eric

I remember seeing GnR opening for Motley Crue before they were anybody. They huddled onstage between songs trying to figure out what to play next. They were booed after 30 minutes. The sad thing was that the band sounded better than the Crue.

      • The Jackal

I have seen these guys live. Great show. Skid Row opened for them.

  • Susan Oglesby

Why did they buy the tickets in the first place if they were gonna boo and throw things at the performers?? I don’t blame Axl

    • The Jackal

Glad we think alike Susan and at the same time.

    • TMB

If you listen closely at the end of the video you can hear a woman saying they had been sitting there for 3 hours waiting for the show to begin.
I also imagine that many of the audience was already worked up due to similar events in England.
Not the first time Axl and co. have been late. The same thing happened to them in Montreal in the early 90s.

      • The Jackal

Okay, so you know what you are going to get. Buyer beware.

  • JoeC

Axl’s next gig: The Christian music circuit!!!!!

  • AndiLynn

Axl has always had issues with performing while things are thrown on stage. He did the same thing in Dallas in the early ’90s.

    • Pete

I’m not necessarily defending Axl because I really can’t stand him anymore these days, but should any performer have to put up with things being thrown at them? As an amateur performer myself, I hate this notion that people seem to think having thrown at them is something a performer should have to put up with or should be considered an acceptable thing to do to take place a concert.

  • Eimear

They came back after 30 minutes not one hour. I wish those idiots didnt throw bottles. Ruined it for everyone else!

  • yvonne

I was at the gig and what you dont realise is that the support gig was really bad so when they finally finished everyone was excited about the band coming on but we had to wait for over an hour. The crowd had been told that the place was closing at 11 so everyone thought that we would be only getting 30 mins. Security told me at 10pm that Axl was asleep!!! It was a school night and everyone thought it would be over at about 11pm but he only came on at 10.25!!!! He didnt apologise about being late and just didnt give a damn basically. Everyone in the crowd felt really disappointed…. the tickets were €75 each!! A lot of people I talked to traveled to the gig and had to take time off work and pay for a hotel. I absolutely dont condone people throwing things at him but he was just plain rude and now everyone who made an effort to book tickets, transport, accomodation, babysitters are out of pocket and really frustrated.

    • w myers

Everyone thought it would be over at 11 pm?????????

Anyone who is or was or might want to be a GNR fan knows that a GNR show will NEVER be over at 11 pm.

Why are you fooling yourself? If its GNR its gonna be a long night. Get with it or don’t buy tickets to a GNR show, silly.

    • Roger

This sounds dead-on, and is the reason all this happened. Axl was being an inconsiderate prima donna.

    • COLIN MCCLOSKEY

I SAW GNR IN DAYTON OHIO AND THEY DIDN’T GO ON INTIL AFTER12:00AM.. AND THEN THEY SUCKED! I WILL NEVER PAY MONEY TO SEE THEM AGAIN!!!

  • BobDecker

Axl Rose is a terrible human being. That is why objects were thrown at him. It makes sense.

    • The Jackal

Then why go pay to see them. They get paid either way.

  • C.Ryan

Somebody had better do some damage control real fast. Dublin’s name is MUD! Well, muddier today. The people of Dublin are MUDDIER today! The promoter’s are MUD! GNR’s name is MUD! Axl Rose’s name is MUD! All of you need to do damage control TODAY!!!
It only takes a handful of nasty people to start a mess like this. It will take hundreds, if not thousands, of people and a very long time to make this horrible memory go away. If Dublin thinks the economy is bad now, wait until all the world’s entertainers say, “No way! I’m not doing Dublin.”

    • jared

Dozen’s of bands play Dublin every year. I’m pretty sure once any other band or promoter sees what happens and then sees GNR’s name attached they’ll just figure it was a GNR problem, not a Dublin problem nor a promoter problem. Afterall, GNR has a reputation for being diva-like.

    • Robin

@C.Ryan – you really like saying MUD!

  • Dezurtdog

They were booing because the band was over an hour late. GNR used to be my favorite band, but Axl and his childish behavior not to mention his disrespect for the fans, turned me into a hater. Axl, it’s over. Please leave the stage for good.

    • kim

i totally agree with u there, i was at the gig on wednesday, i had travelled up from clonmel, and had to saty overnight, so not only did i have to pay €75 for a ticket, i had to pay for hotel too which cost quite alot aswell, i used to love GNR, i grew up listening to them, but after AXL’s disrespect and his rudeness on stage on wedensday, i am not seeing him again unless he learns some manners

Slash should have the GNR name not that excuse for a man

    • echo134

slash is a pimped out overrated media whore punk!did you know is going really bald(look on u-tube)and he wears hair extentions(wig)

  • Jobee

I saw GNR once, 1986 opening for The Stones in LA. They rocked the place. Reading these comments, I really feel lucky to have seen a good performance

    • TJC360

I heard they sucked but I got to see them in their prime (Use your Illusion) in New Haven, CT and they wer fu**ing awesome.

  • goober

Let’s get this right. It is not GUNS N ROSES, it is Axl Rose. He destroyed the greatest band ever and now behaves as if he is still relevant.

    • jodipo

Axl Rose destroyed the Beatles? Damn, Yoko will be thrilled to hear that.

      • DogBoy

        LOL

  • KR

I love GNR, been to many of their shows, never have they taken the stage on time. It’s how its been after 20 years people should know that by now, right or wrong, Axel goes by his time. If you don’t like it don’t buy tickets.

    • The Jackal

      Exactly

  • ®ustymustdie

why is it that when a band replaces members they make the new clowns look similar to the old ones? I don’t know who the new ass clown is, but the hat & les paul gimmick are pathetic.

    • Pete

This “ass clown” is Buckethead, who prior to being in GNR has long been a respected guitar virtuoso.

He’s famous for the things he wears on his head, and the hat he’s wearing may or may not be a reference to a certain other guitarist. Second, he’s no stranger to the Les Paul. He’s played one for years and even has his own Gibson signature model.

      • COLIN MCCLOSKEY

THAT’S NOT BUCKETHEAD. HE ONLY WEARS KFC CHICKEN BUCKETS HE GOT SMART AND QUIT THE BAND AWHILE AGO!

    • DogBoy

agree. doesn’t matter what Buckethead may or may not be famous for putting on his head, or if he is a virtuoso. looks like a Slash-wannabe…

    • echo134

      gn’r were always a gimmick!just another MTV DARLING!NO MTV NO GN’R
