Kanye West's song for Taylor Swift: What would it sound like?

kanye-swiftImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR Photos; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosAmong all the apologies, explanations, and reflections that Kanye West shared via Twitter over Labor Day weekend lurked one tantalizing tidbit of news. “I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that’s so beautiful and I want her to have it,” West wrote on Saturday morning. “If she won’t take it then I’ll perform it for her.” A West-penned Swift track would be a remarkable event for a whole slew of reasons. But what would it sound like? With only West’s “so beautiful” description to go on, it’s up to us to fill in the blanks.

Any song West wrote for Swift would presumably feature a big, catchy hook — the kind found all over 2008’s 808s & Heartbreak (think “Heartless”), not to mention earlier jams like “Spaceship” and “Never Let Me Down.” None of those songs quite fit with Swift’s typical style, but West’s tweeted proclamation that “I LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC” suggests he’d happily incorporate a little Nashville twang into this hypothetical composition. As for the honest emotionality that is a hallmark of Swift’s usual lyrics, he’s got that in the bag. Consider the way he laid his feelings out on 2007’s “Big Brother” (about his relationship with Jay-Z) or 2005’s “Hey Mama.” Not so many universes away from “Forever & Always,” is it?

Of course, there’s a big difference between Kanye writing heartfelt pop songs from his own perspective and Kanye doing the same from Swift’s. And the fact that Swift generally prefers writing her own material these days might pose a problem. All the same, I think this collaboration could be just crazy enough to work.

What about you? What do you think a Kanye West-Taylor Swift song would sound like? Speculate away in the comments!

is EW still talking about this?

Why would Taylor want to be caught up in Kayne’s world? She is probably like, “Why me? Please let this end”. He is 15 years older than her. Most 20 year olds don’t want to hang with someone that much older than them. I could be wrong. Peace.

didnt she collaborate with John Mayer? he’s 33 it wouldnt hurt her, as cross genre collabs tend to be very interesting. plus kanye, arrogant as he is, does produce good music.

      • skaa

yeah, she did that collab with t-pain, Thug Story, remember that?

I think if this were to happen, it could be the most amazing song ever, or the worst song in the history of the world.

  • Tye-Grr

I think Taylor would be stupid to pass it up. Say what you want about him as a person, but Kanye the musician is pure genius. He’s arguably the best producer in the game, and his first 3 albums were all AOTY nominees, so that speaks to how his music couldn’t be ignored despite his arrogance. I hope this actually works out and she records it.

*shakes head* What??? Maybe Kanye is a musical genius to YOU but to me any kind of rap/hip hop sounds like a jumbled up mess rather than actual music. Mozart was a musical genius, Kanye can just talk real fast.

I also find it hard to see Taylor Swift’s fans flocking to hear a song by Kanye West, not because of the MTV controversy but because Kanye’s music probably doesn’t appeal to her fans all that much.

@Nerwen Aldarion don’t be so ignorant. hip hop is a genre of music and it is a form of music too. i don’t like classical but i dont bash it. i appreciate it as music too, and unline Mozart, kanye didnt come from a wealthy childhood. don’t be so ignorant.

U probably haven’t heard of hip-hop, because you’re ass is country like taylor. Yeah kanye was cruel to what he did, but everytime he produce songs, his music is more soulful than any other hip-hop producers I know. Hopefully u took down notes on that.

      • James

What are you talking about? They essentially have the exact same audience, pre-adolescent white kids.

  • cari

Didn’t Kanye do Bittersweet with John Mayer? Was that not…somewhat…heartfelt? Besides, the song is ABOUT the event, I believe, rather than a collaboration. Though I would enjoy a collab from the two.

  • Alice

I think that he’s trying to use Taylor to promote his new album or whatever. Kayne West really needs to sort his life out cause Taylor iis way out of hiis legue

  • mrhate

I think he should stop whining like a little beeotch, crawl back to the hood, and do his own music. TS doesn’t need him.

  • mikeeemorgan

i know t and she won’t do it. and i don’t blame her. west is just trying to make nice with one of the most popular and influential artists of these current days – a trick only criss angel could pull off.

  • Joan Smith

Don’t you get it Kanye? There is no “sorry” big enough. Regardless if it was Taylor or someone else you don’t diss someone during an awards show. It’s rude and career stopping…as you are experiencing. If you did it to her then who else will you do it to? You’re a creep and all you can do is hope America has a short memory. It’s obvious it’s longer than a year. Perhaps 5-10 years from now you can put it to rest. Until then, down on your knees peasant.

  • The Southerner

Not a stretch at all. Kayne and Taylor both did songs with John Mayer so there’s only 1 degree of separation anyway.

BTW, John Mayer is the only person who has a bigger ego than Kayne (See the making of Bittersweet on youtube. It’s funny as s—!)

  • CaladorCP

I dont think it would work. Yes, both artists can convey feelings in their songs but Taylor and Kanye have way too many differences in their music. Mixing country and hip-hop/rap would be a bad idea. I cant see Taylor Swift fans listening to it, or Kanye fans listening to it. Not all, but most country fans dont listen to hip-hop/rap and most hip-hop/rap fans dont listen to country. It would just be wierd. And what would it be about? The interuption on stage? I cant see taylor singing about that. The artist has to sell the song and I cant really see taylor singing a song that kanye wrote. it just wouldnt work.

    • SoLow

actually the first hiphop/country collabo was “over and over” by Nelly Ft. Tim McGraw and it was one of the longest #1 songs that year, so you cant say it’s a bad idea.

  • gleston

Really Knaye?!! I mean Im pretty sure its a good idea or whatvr but cmon man give it up! the shxt was a yr ago youve been postin all these good music and now here we go again?! with the same taylor shxt. shes over it?! you should be too!! yea ppl make mistakes and it was purely fckd up of what u did. • mausland

  • SB
