Wyclef Jean officially withdraws from Haiti presidential race

Wyclef-JeanImage Credit: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesWyclef Jean has officially ended his controversial run for president of Haiti. “After weeks of quiet but painstaking reflection with my wife and daughter, I have chosen to end my bid for the presidency of Haiti,” the singer said in a statement issued to the press today. “This was not an easy conclusion to reach; but it is one that was thoughtfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors and weighing the course that will best advance the healing of the country and help it find the quickest path to recovery.”

Jean’s presidential bid was rejected by Haiti’s electoral council last month on the grounds that he was not a permanent resident. While he initially announced plans to appeal the decision, the council said this was impossible. “It’s not about my candidacy — this appeal was meant to address the shortcomings of the process for every Haitian,” Jean’s statement continued. “Though my run for the presidency was cut short, in this way, I feel it was not in vain; it’s something we can use to improve conditions for my Haitian brothers and sisters.”

He now says he plans to focus on his musical career, including an album titled If I Were President, the Haitian Experience due next February.

How can you offically end a bid that the court said you weren’t eligible for in the first place?

Why should he want to run a country that he didn’t love enough to live in?

  • Sharlin

If you don’t live in the country, why run?

How’s about if he were even serious about running for the presidency he move to Haiti so that when the next election comes he’ll meet the residency requirement. If it really was worth it to him he’d do that…something tells me this president of haiti thing was just fleeting not well thought out idea.

Gee, even the Haitians could see this guy was a piece of crapola. They found a way to keep him out. Take note America. We should have used the “not a citizen” card in our last election.
