Dr. Dre says he'd be open to working with 'American Idol' contestants

Dr-DreImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesDr. Dre can afford to be picky about which artists he works with. But with his good pal and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chair Jimmy Iovine joining American Idol as an in-house mentor for the upcoming tenth season, would Dre consider lending his studio talents to a contestant from the show? Sure, if the chemistry was right.

“You know what? It all depends on the artist, if they turn me on or not. That’s all there is to it,” Dr. Dre tells the Music Mix backstage at a Beats by Dr. Dre headphone launch event. “Of course, they have to have a serious talent,” he adds. “I have to be comfortable vibing with them in the studio. And I really like artists that have a story.”

What do you say? Would Dr. Dre and American Idol be a good match?

great! any AI contestant in need of profanity, drum machines or computerized samples is in luck.

    • judging by the show’s musical output, they may need dre’s help.

      • couchgrouch

is Dre a musician, or does he just operate machines and samplers?

    He’s a LONG way from Compton…

I don’t see how this would work. Most of the teeny-bopper wanna-be pop tarts on this show wouldn’t know how to handle real hip-hop performance if you served it to them on a platter.

    • couchgrouch

by real hip-hop performance do you mean intense profanity yelled over machines?

got to love the ignorance of some people

geez, that’s not a nice thing to say about rappers.

      • Desmo

We get it, you don’t like rap.

      • Anon

        Rap isn’t music.

Forget about working with the upcoming season contestants, I`ve been saying for a while he needs to hook up with the Fantastic Fantasia. I think that would be a good collabo. With Dr. Dre`s funky beats and Fantasia`s soul/funk voice. Out of this world!

    • joyaliz

That would be a great collaboration.

  • mark

this would be a great collaboration! I’m sure his genius is transferable to other genres and he is relevant. Go Dre!

I love ya Dre…but the product placement for Beats by Dre (really by Monster) is a little over the top. First off, Monster and Beats by Dre DO NOT MAKE microphones. Secondly, all those producers they showcased on the show…THEY DO NOT USE BEATS to mix and produce music. Especially when they’re not producing hip-hop…there just too much bass and muddied mid range to use those so-so headphones for real mix work. I understand Monster and Beats by Dre wants some more exposure outside of all the NBA ballers who are always wearing these headphones (wouldn’t be surprised if some of them were sponsored)…but the American Idol “product placement” is kinda annoying since it’s just not true to how those headphones are really used…ie, not true music production grade headphones. Sorry for the geek headphone rant…but it was just something I had to get off my ears…=)

I hear what all of you are saying but if you really were a Dr. Dre fan you would know that a lot of his music is used by real instruments with real musicians playing them. I understand that because of his genre of music you wouldn’t believe that Dr. Dre actually appreciates real music. Truthfully that’s why his sounds sound so much rawer. Its not some computer sampled sound. Well not always.
