What song is most likely to make men cry?

REMImage Credit: Joe Giron/CorbisMusic can make men cry. It’s okay to admit it — I’ve shed a tear or two to a tune in my day. According to a new study by PRS for Music (hat tip: Vulture), the song that most reliably produces this effect for gents is R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” followed by Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Yeah, those are some tear-jerkers, all right.

Have any of those songs ever made you weep, dudes? What about any other tunes? We promise we won’t laugh. While you think it over, check out a live performance of “Everybody Hurts” after the jump and see if you can keep your eyes dry.

I’m way too distracted by that blue thing on Michael Stipe’s head.

    • nodnarb

Michael Stipe’s late-stage foray into pretentious and annoying theatrics is the only thing about that video that makes me cry.

      • Lucy

      • Brandon’s a douchecannon

Oops. Did I type that out loud?

    • LOL

      “Bad” by U2.

      • Levi

That used to be one song I constantly had on mixed cd’s for when I went running. Anytime it came on, I’d just start walking and tear up for no other reason than it made me happy.

      • Michael

        That is a great song.

    • S.O.

I’ve cried to that too. So did one of my college friends. Not during the same time though. That would have been AWKWARD.

    • wendy

I think the comment about the blue thing on michaels head is funny!

  • Brad

    Ray Lamontagne – Empty

    • KRibbons

Yes. And “Accidental Babies” by Damien Rice always makes my brother cry.

  • Laura

‘One More Day’ by Diamond Rio makes my dad cry.

    • mary q contrary

The only time I’ve ever seen my husband tear up due to a piece of music alone was when I was listening to the Lost soundtrack a couple months ago. It was ‘Life and Death’, and it made me start crying, too.

  • Jen

I know the only song I’ve ever seen make my father cry is “The Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics.

    • T.E.

Second the vote for “The Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics. Surprisingly effective at wringing “if only” dreams of time with a lost father.

    • AJ

Good choice. That song makes MY dad cry, which is not common!

    • glenn

Still makes me cry too, it reminds me of my late grandfather.

    • BJ

“The Living Years” is a good one. Also, “The Dance” by Garth Brooks.

    • Pat

I love that song and haven’t heard it in years. Makes me cry too.

    • john p

one of my all time tear jerkers. especially since my dad passed away

    • PJM

I vote for that, too. Especially when it gets to that third verse.

    • Preston

Very emotional song; I think about my own father who passed away. And it even outdid Nobody’s Perfect which peaked at No. 66, by going all the way to No.1. A lot of people related to that record at the time.

  • tma

“Im Already There” by Lonestar gets me every time. any father can relate.

  • PeterBilt

    I’m Already Home-Tim Mcgraw

  • Blair

Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross

    • Chris

I second that. Gets me every time. Once made the mistake of listening to it in the car lol

    • Noelle

Yeah, that one breaks my dad.

    • J. Baker

Yeah. This one does the job every time.

    • wakeforce

That one and “Cats in the Cradle” because a song about a father and son, whether you love or hated your dad, it doesn’t matter.

      • Cake-n-Baker

“Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin will do it every time.

    • County Gal Sal

The Dance by Garth Brooks gets me everytime. It tells you no matter how much your are hurting (when losing a loved one) it was worth it. Killer song.

  • tma

and… “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw… anyone with a father can relate.

  • Jim Ross

First read the words to Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle and then try and dance with your daughter at her wedding to that song. I don’t care how “tough” you are, you will cry!

    • Monica

This is the first song I thought of! I love it but it makes me cry every time I hear it and I know quite a few men that have shed tears over it.

    • lefty

First song I thought of as well…

  • Bobby F

    Tim McGraw- My Little Girl
Glenn Frey- Part of You, Part of Me

  • rma

    Cat’s in the craddle

    • K

      I second that.

    • Jim

^This. Surprised it wasn’t at the top of the list.

    • Stacie

‘Member this on Cougar Town? The guys had to stare at each other while listening to this song and the first one to cry loses.

      • McProphet

        EMOTIONAL CHICKEN!!! lol

        Love some Cougar Town

    • Mole

Cat’s in the Cradle is THE guy-cry song!

      • What

How in the world is Cat’s in the Cradle a crying song???

    • Zo

That was the first one I thought of.

    • Dan S

Yes, obviously. This is the first one that comes to mind for me.

For older folks, I would also any of Jim Croce’s slower stuff and the song “Please Come to Boston” by Dave Loggins.

  • Jay

I cry every time I hear a country song…. does that count?

    • ks

My husband does too, so yes it counts

  • Nick

    I agree with TMA..Lonestar. I’m already there.

  • Sarah

“Tough Little Boys” by Gary Allan has an affect on my husband. There’s a new country song out about a little boy growing up that gets my husband every time, now that we are the parents of a 7 month old son.

  • Greg

    Forever Young

    • Noelle

Rod Stewart or Bob Dylan? Dylan’s I can understand but Rod’s…

      • john

you’re not a dude, so your opinion doesn’t matter anyway

    • Maureen

      Or Alpahville? ;)

    • elot

anyone but the jay z one that don’t get me wrong i love hip hop and hov is a legend but he really killed a classic there.

      • ohyeah

    • Cake-n-Baker
