Perez Hilton hosts N.E.R.D., Pitbull, Taio Cruz at pre-VMA party: on the scene

NERD-PEREZ-HILTONImage Credit: Christopher Polk/Getty Images; Johnny Nunez/WireImage.com “I love music!” Perez Hilton seemed to shout those three words at least once every time he took the stage at L.A.’s Wiltern Theatre last night. While he’s still best known as a cantankerous gossip blogger, Hilton clearly does spend a lot of time thinking about tunes, between his Perezcious Music label and his ongoing “One Night in…” concert series. Promotional materials for “One Night in Los Angeles” promised A-list celebs like Katy Perry and Kanye West would be in the audience; they never showed, as far as I could tell. In a way it was fitting. This event ended up being more about music than about stars, after all. READ FULL STORY »

Taylor Swift to perform song about Kanye incident at the VMAs?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , , ,

According to the Associated Press, Taylor Swift has written a song about last year’s Kanye West incident and will unveil it with a surprise performance tomorrow night at the VMAs. That means the two probably won’t team up as some had hoped (here are some of our suggestions for such a pairing), but we’re still dying to hear Swift’s musical take on the now-infamous encounter.

What do you think? Are you excited to hear it, or should they move on, already?

Perez Hilton responds to 50 Cent Twitter controversy

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

On Sept. 6, rapper 50 Cent tweeted that, “Perez Hilton calld me douchebag so I had my homie shoot up a gay wedding. wasnt his but still made me feel better.” Attached to his tweet was a photo of two men in tuxedos, running from an angry mob. (Here is what appears to be the original Hilton post that angered 50 Cent). The rapper’s post caught the attention of GLAAD who then asked that gays and allies tweet back, “RT @glaad: Tell @50cent to let his fans know that anti-gay violence isn’t something to joke about. http://bit.ly/ab6rXV #LGBT #gay Pls RT!”

Hilton tells EW, “Joking about violence is not funny. 50 Cent should stick to what he does best, rapping, and leave the funny business to comedians.”

Lady Gaga and former producer withdraw competing lawsuits

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

lady-gaga-3Image Credit: Barry Brecheisen/WireImageThe Bad Romance played out between Lady Gaga and her former producer/alleged paramour Rob Fusari in the New York state court system for the past several months is, at last, rah-rah-ah-ah-ah resolved.

Yahoo reports that both sides have withdrawn their claims: Fusari’s, demanding $30.5 million for transforming a then-unknown Stefani Germanotti into the superstar she became by co-writing her songs (including “Paparazzi”), helping her get a record deal, and giving her her famous moniker, and Gaga’s alleging that Fusari violated employment statutes in New York and New Jersey by entrapping an inexperienced young woman with shady contract clauses and deliberately exploitative addendums.

It’s unclear whether the pair made some kind of monetary agreement outside of the courts; calls for comment have not yet been returned.

Simon Cowell wades into Lou Reed-Susan Boyle controversy, asking 'Do we have permission, yes or no?'

simon-cowellImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR Photos; Brendon Thorne/Getty Images; Ray Tamarra/Getty ImagesThe beef between Lou Reed and Susan Boyle is still cooking. And now Simon Cowell’s jumped on the stove. Since we reported yesterday that the rock legend would not allow SuBo to perform his 1972 classic Perfect Day” for her appearance on America’s Got Talent, Reed’s reps have denied that he personally vetoed her request. Instead, they say, the issue was legally clearing the track in America in time for her performance–which they could not do fast enough.

Speaking to TMZ, Cowell called Reed’s supposed rejection “petty, so pathetic” and added that “Loads of people have covered this song. Well Lou, if you’re listening to this, do we have permission, yes or no, to put the song on America’s Got Talent next week?  Personal request from me.” A simple question from a straight shooter.

How do you think this is going to turn out, folks? Should Boyle let go of “Perfect Day” and  keep it moving? Or should she keep the fight alive? Let us know.

Justin Bieber throws water balloons at cops, keeps bangs intact

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Justin-BieberImage Credit: Utho Coxall/PR PhotosHe fought the law and the law… got wet. The internet is giddy today with news of la Biebs’ misbehavior, a relatively mild adolescent rebellion involving water balloons and several state troopers backstage before a performance at a Maryland state fair.

The bedazzlingly coiffed teen unicorn was reportedly “horsing around with members of his staff” outside his trailer when said water balloons were tossed at two state troopers, hitting one’s gun belt before bursting and glancing off the chest of another.

A state police spokesperson called Bieber’s behavior “inappropriate” but says they will not file an incident report or take any further action.

As pop-star scandals go, it’s pretty much that stuff that really, really boring episodes of Behind The Music are made of. But you tell us, readers—does it signal a growing sense of hubris and untouchability on Bieber’s behalf, or just ordinary teenage-boy hijinks?

Rihanna's sexy 'Only Girl (In the World)' single art: What do you think of it?

Filed under: News and tagged: , , ,

rihannaThis week Def Jam revealed the cover art to Rihanna‘s new dance single, “Only Girl (In the World).” In it the Bajan pop princess sits nude in a field, blanketed by a red rose dress. Though she’s somewhat naked, it doesn’t come off as a risqué look like some of the other racy shots she’s taken in the past. Remember those pictures she took for GQ in January?

This, more fashion house artsy and elegant, has nothing on those. Let us know what you think of it.

weezer-memoriesThere’s no cameo from the erstwhile cover star of Weezer’s upcoming album Hurley in the band’s new video—just a bunch of jackasses.

In fact, professional Jackasses: the merry, nard-destroying pranksters of the MTV stunt show turned upcoming 3-D movie: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man, and sundry other smiling masochists.

Watch them all harm themselves in the name of good fun, after the jump:

Colbie Caillat kicks off the NFL season

In the Music Mix’s continuing coverage of sports, we now turn to last night’s NFL season opener between… Nevermind, I can’t keep up this ruse and be bothered to even do a quick search to see who was playing last night. So let’s just get to the EW connection: Songstress Colbie Caillat provided the pre-kickoff National Anthem for the first official game of the NFL season! Woo! And disclaimer: I’m already a huge Colbie fan (“Fallin’ For You” gets me every time!). But I have to say, she did a deliriously nice job with her guitar-laced, sorta countrified, lilting, delicate version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It’s totally Colbie! Totally not lip-synched! And totally…NFL kickoff worthy? You decide:
