LFO lead singer Rich Cronin, 36, dies after battle with leukemia

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Rich Cronin, the lead singer and founder of the late-1990s boy band LFO, has passed away after a long battle with leukemia, according to reports from TMZ and E! News. He was 36. LFO, or the Lyte Funky Ones, were best known for the 1999 beach-y hit “Summer Girls,” which included the renown of-the-moment lyric penned by Cronin, “I like girls that wear Abercrombie & Fitch.” The video for their follow-up, “Girls on TV,” featured Cronin’s then-girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt. The band split in 2002. In 2005, Cronin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. Two years later, his cancer in remission, Cronin — along with former boy banders Jeff Timmons (of 98 Degrees), Bryan Abrams (of Color Me Badd), and Chris Kirkpatrick (of ’N Sync) — starred in the VH1 reality series Mission: Man Band, about the quartet’s struggle to start up a new band.

Kirkpatrick updated his Facebook profile today with the message “RIP to a great friend Rich C.” Lance Bass also posted to Twitter with the message, ”Sad sad day that Rich Cronin died – was an amazing guy.”

In 2006, Cronin, looking back on his career, told EW, “I am truly thankful for the success I had. And if it happens again, that’d be really nice. I’m just that same guy writing pop songs to make people happy. And I still only like girls in Abercrombie & Fitch.”

Arcade Fire's revolutionary 'We Used to Wait' video: Director Chris Milk explains how it was created

arcade-fireImage Credit: Eric KayneThe Wilderness Downtown, the interactive website that Arcade Fire released last week for their song “We Used To Wait,” is something very different from a typical indie-rock promotional clip. So it’s fitting that the band hired a director, Chris Milk, who despite his impressive résumé in the field — Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” and “Touch the Sky,” U2 & Green Day’s “The Saints Are Coming” — has decidedly mixed feelings about the music video medium. “I spend a lot of time thinking about how music videos could ever achieve the emotional resonance of straight music,” Milk says in an email exchange with the Music Mix. “Honestly, I’m not sure music videos can ever really touch you as deeply as music alone can. Music scores your life. You interact with it. It becomes the soundtrack to that one summer with that one girl. Music videos are very concrete and rigid because they rely on someone else’s vision. Sometimes mine.”

Cutting-edge Web elements help make The Wilderness Downtown a more personal, immersive experience. Viewers enter an address of their choice (preferably their childhood home), calling up images from Google Maps at key moments in the song. As the music goes on, viewers can also enter messages to their younger selves which are then incorporated into the presentation. “By letting the audience participate in the visuals, we allow for more of an emotional connection,” Milk says. The xx beat out Mumford and Sons, Corinne Bailey Rae for England's Mercury Prize

the-xxImage Credit: Ferdaus Shamim/WireImage.comFew industry oddmakers were surprised last night when bedroom-pop savants the xx—looking atypically bronzed and smiley, left—took top honors at the 18th annual Mercury Music Prize ceremony in London.

Still, it caps off a banner year for the barely-legal co-ed foursome (currently a trio, following the late 2009 departure of keyboardist Baria Qureshi due to “personal differences”; but does she still get a piece of the £20,000 cash prize?).

And the band’s gauzy self-titled debut—with its near-constant rotation in coffeehouses, hipster hair salons, and basement makeout rooms—certainly beats last year’s left-field winner, rapper Speech Debelle’s little-known Speech Therapy, for sheer indie ubiquity.

Their 2010 competition, while considerable, never really seemed likely to surmount the xx’s long lead. If anything, close collaborators and tourmates Laura Marling and Mumford & Sons may have split votes, and 2003 winner Dizzee Rascal had little hope of repeating his luck with a two-fer. But what of fellow nominees Biffy Cyro, Corinne Bailey Rae, Villagers, Foals, and Paul Weller?

Stream a slice of the xx’s narcotic, twilit pop below, and let us know what you think of the voting committee’s final decision: READ FULL STORY »

Joseph Gordon-Levitt sings Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance': Watch here

Joseph-Gordon-LevittInception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt apparently has more than just acting talent. He knows his way around a guitar and microphone, too. Last Monday at downtown Manhattan’s Pianos, Gordon-Levitt performed a tongue-in-cheek rock version of Lady Gaga’s 2009 smash, “Bad Romance.”

After coolly running through the first verse, he launches into Gaga’s “Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah/Rom-mah-rom-mum-mah/GaGa-oo-la-la/Want your bad romance” as the intimate crowd claps, cheers, and laughs. “Now for those still doubting the artistic integrity of Lady Gaga, this next verse has three [Alfred] Hitchcock references and the use of the word ‘shtick’,” Joseph joked before the next verse.

Check out his performance after the jump.

Kings Of Leon return with new single and video 'Radioactive'

kings-of-leonWhen in doubt, bring on the kiddie gospel choir. Tennessee rockers Kings of Leon extoll the pleasures of country living—and Rockwellian child mentoring—in the new clip for the first single from their upcoming Only By Night followup Come Around Sundown.

Here there be soccer and swimmin’-hole fishing, sprinkler-running and barn-harmonizing, field-frolicking and kite-flying. Here there be not: flammable intercourse, interpersonal advantage-taking, and of course, song licensing to any other sort of singing choir.

Watch after the jump, and tell us what you think of the Kings’ musical pastoral:

Will Smith's daughter releases new single: Is she the next Rihanna?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , ,

Will Smith’s son Jaden has already had a fantastic summer thanks to the success of his remake of The Karate Kid. Now, Smith’s daughter, Willow, is following in her father’s and mother’s (Jada Pinkett-Smith fronted the rock band Wicked Wisdom) footsteps by releasing her first single, the bouncy “Whip My Hair.” While I was hesitant to listen to the track at first…I actually kinda love it. It’s ridiculously catchy (the hook “I whip my hair back and forth” will be in your head all day long) and it’s got great production values; it’s sorta like Lil’ Mama meets Rihanna. Honestly, if Rihanna recorded this tune, we’d all be saying it’s the next big hit. Take a listen below to “Whip My Hair”…

What do you think Music Mix-ers? Is Willow Smith have what it takes to be a music superstar, like her dad? Or are you underwhelmed?

Michael Jackson's father admits spanking him as a child

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

joe-jacksonImage Credit: Denise Truscello/WireImage.comJoe Jackson, father of the late Michael Jackson, has admitted spanking his son in a new interview. Yet he maintained that he’s been unfairly painted as a bad father. “They try to make a big issue of when I spanked Michael or some of the kids, you know, just like they didn’t spank their kids when they did wrong,” he said (quotes via CNN). “The media twists everything.”

Jackson also said that corporal punishment was a method of keeping his sons away from gang violence. Before his death, Michael Jackson repeatedly described his father’s strict parenting style in terms that amounted to physical and verbal abuse.

The controversial admission comes from a forthcoming documentary. Click through to the jump to see the clip, plus commentary from HLN‘s Showbiz Tonight. What do you think of this revelation? How much more does Joe Jackson have to say? READ FULL STORY »

Bruno Mars wows his lady with cassette tape drawings in 'Just the Way You Are' video: Watch here

Producer/songwriter and now breakout solo star Bruno Mars released the video for his mid-tempo love song “Just the Way You Are” this morning. It’s been decades since cassette tapes have been used for music. So Mars finds a suave way to use the retro tech in the clip, yanking out the tape to draw pictures of his love interest.

The video is just as sweet as the track itself–currently No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Check it out after the jump and let us know what you think.

Allison Iraheta parts ways with Jive Records

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

allison-irahetaImage Credit: Scott D. Smith/Retna Ltd.Allison Iraheta, fourth-place finisher on season 8 of American Idol, has parted ways with her label, Jive Records, EW.com has learned. Rumors began to swirl in the blogosphere over Labor Day weekend, when fans of the red-headed rocker noticed she was no longer listed under the roster of artists on Jive’s official Web site.

“Allison Iraheta has parted ways with Jive Records, however she remains signed to 19 Recordings. Allison is currently on the road in the U.S. opening for Adam Lambert on the Glam Nation Tour,” a 19 spokesperson told EW.

19 Recordings is the label arm of 19 Entertainment, which produces Idol. The company has traditionally signed the winner and runner-up of each season of Idol (and occasionally one or two other finalists), then licensed their albums to a Sony Music label (Jive or RCA) for release; READ FULL STORY »
