Where's the beef? Lady Gaga goes raw in new photo spread

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Vogue-Lady-gaga-MeatSomebody had to keep all those Muppets, lobsters, and sparkly armadillos company. And now Gaga’s closet menagerie has a new edition: Little Monsters, meet the meat bikini.

Vogue Hommes Japan—in the same issue which featured the Lady’s alleged male alter ego, Jo Calderone—trades in the cover-photo drag for dead cow in a Terry Richardson spread that, not surprisingly, has already upset at least one animal-rights group.

I’m more disappointed that Richardson is jacking wardrobe ideas from America’s Next Top Model, circa Cycle 10. Then again, Tyra and the Jays were hardly the first Mensa minds to explore the abattoir-couture concept. And everything Gaga touches does seem to be made new, at least temporarily, by the sheer reflective glow of her outsized celebrity.

But is it art, or just bad barbecue? And are there still new places for Gaga to go, fashion-wise, or has she finally hit a sartorial wall? Tell us, readers, in the comments below.

Kanye West's song for Taylor Swift: What would it sound like?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

kanye-swiftImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR Photos; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosAmong all the apologies, explanations, and reflections that Kanye West shared via Twitter over Labor Day weekend lurked one tantalizing tidbit of news. “I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that’s so beautiful and I want her to have it,” West wrote on Saturday morning. “If she won’t take it then I’ll perform it for her.” A West-penned Swift track would be a remarkable event for a whole slew of reasons. But what would it sound like? With only West’s “so beautiful” description to go on, it’s up to us to fill in the blanks.

Any song West wrote for Swift would presumably feature a big, catchy hook — the kind found all over 2008′s 808s & Heartbreak (think “Heartless”), not to mention earlier jams like “Spaceship” and “Never Let Me Down.” None of those songs quite fit with Swift’s typical style, but West’s tweeted proclamation that “I LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC” suggests he’d happily incorporate a little Nashville twang into this hypothetical composition. As for the honest emotionality that is a hallmark of Swift’s usual lyrics, he’s got that in the bag. Consider the way he laid his feelings out on 2007′s “Big Brother” (about his relationship with Jay-Z) or 2005′s “Hey Mama.” Not so many universes away from “Forever & Always,” is it?

Of course, there’s a big difference between Kanye writing heartfelt pop songs from his own perspective and Kanye doing the same from Swift’s. And the fact that Swift generally prefers writing her own material these days might pose a problem. All the same, I think this collaboration could be just crazy enough to work.

What about you? What do you think a Kanye West-Taylor Swift song would sound like? Speculate away in the comments!

John Lennon's killer denied parole again: Will he ever be released?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Mark-David-ChapmanImage Credit: NYC PD/AFP/Getty ImagesThe man who murdered John Lennon nearly 30 years ago was denied parole for the sixth time today, CNN reports.

Mark David Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life in New York’s Attica Correctional Facility after pleading guilty to shooting the former Beatle to death in December 1980. He has previously applied for parole and been denied in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. He will have another opportunity to go before the parole board in 2012. Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, has repeatedly said that she would fear for her safety and that of Lennon’s two sons if Chapman were released.

In its written decision, the New York State Parole Board acknowledged Chapman’s generally good behavior record behind bars. “This panel remains concerned, however, about the disregard you displayed for the norms of our society and the sanctity of human life when, after careful planning, you traveled to New York for the sole purpose of killing John Lennon,” the board’s decision went on. “This premeditated, senseless and selfish act of tragic consequence, when considered with required and relevant factors, leads to the conclusion that your discretionary release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community. To hold otherwise would so deprecate the seriousness of your crime as to undermine respect for the law.”

New York State Parole Board spokesperson Marc Violette says the board released nine percent of the violent felony offenders appearing before it in the most recent fiscal year. While explaining that parole commissioners make these decisions based on factors including the inmate’s own statements and communications from the victim’s family, Violette acknowledges that Lennon’s status as a beloved cultural figure might also be playing some role in Chapman’s repeated failure. “At a purely theoretical level, the parole commissioners would probably just look at the facts as presented,” he says. “The notoriety of the crime or the fame of the victim, at a theoretical level, would not play into it. But they’re humans.”

Ne-Yo updates Michael Jackson's 'The Way You Make Me Feel' video in new 'One in a Million' clip: Watch here

ne-yoIt’s a few beats slower than Micheal Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” but Ne-Yo‘s new video for “One in a Million” recalls the gloved one’s 1987 girl-chasing clip. Instead of following a vixen through an alley in the middle of the night with a posse of dancing goons, Ne-Yo and a gang of gentlemen prance through city streets clean in shirts, slacks, and wingtips.

Ne-Yo, a self-described M.J. fanatic, does a wonderful job being true to himself without turning this into a corny carbon copy. I can see Jackson’s influence. But there’s no crotch-grabbing plagiarism. The smooth mid-tempo cut is the third single from the singer/songwriter’s forthcoming album, Libra Scale. Check out the video to see if Ne-Yo’s charming ways, wizardry, and smooth steps actually win the girl over after the jump.

Clearly, though, she was already rehearsing for a life of destroyed denim and general Tik-Tokery way back in 2001 as a freshman at Franklin High School Band Camp. Watch it after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Taylor Swift: Should she respond to Kanye West's latest apology?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

taylor-swift-kanyeImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosThis past Saturday, Kanye West tweeted his most in-depth public apology yet for interrupting Taylor Swift on that fateful night nearly a year ago. Swift’s official response so far has been a familiar silence. Her reps declined to comment today, as they have consistently done for stories involving West over the past months. To borrow the title of Swift’s upcoming album, how come she won’t Speak Now?

It’s worth remembering that West’s Twitter monologue was not his first apology to Swift — more like the fourth. And Swift did answer him when their MTV Video Music Awards debacle was still fresh news. She discussed the matter in light-hearted fashion (“Cool haircut!”) on The View last September, then magnanimously accepted when West called the TV studio to apologize. By leaving it at that, I’d say she’s doing the classy, mature thing. West acted rudely toward her; he told her he was sorry; she accepted his genuine contrition. Saying anything more would only help prolong a story that Swift must be eager to move on from.

But I’m sure some of you will disagree. Do you think Taylor Swift should respond further to Kanye West? How likely do you think it is that you’ll get your wish at the VMAs this coming weekend? Sound off in the comments.

Rihanna releases new single 'Only Girl (In the World),' gets us excited about her upcoming album

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

rihannaImage Credit: John Parra/Wireimage.comThis morning American Idol host Ryan Seacrest debuted Rihanna‘s lead single from her upcoming Loud album, “Only Girl (In the World),” on his radio show. This Euro-pop dance cut is a complete 180 from the sullen “Russian Roulette” single that led the way for Rated R last year, and it sounds like a stronger, sexier version of her 2007 smash “Don’t Stop the Music.” Both “Girl” and that hit were whipped up by Norwegian production duo Stargate.

As synths shoot over the track and a heavy, whipping bass spanks, Rihanna seductively sings, “Baby, I’ll tell you all my secrets that I’m keepin’/You can come inside/And when you enter, you ain’t leavin’/Be my prisoner for the night.” You can listen to it here.

It took me a few songs to get into Rated R, but after this single, she has my ear from song one. Loud is due out this November. What do you think of her new single? Are you anxious for her next album now?

Wyclef Jean snaps back at Sean Penn, Pras at NYC concert: Watch the clip here

wyclef-jean-pennImage Credit: Charles Norfleet/PR Photos; Thony Belizaire/AFP/Getty ImagesHaiti’s board of elections officials aren’t the only people towards whom Wyclef Jean is feeling sour right now. At a concert in NYC this past Friday, Jean had some harsh words for Sean Penn and sometime Fugees bandmate Pras, two of the most prominent celebs who have spoken out against his plans to run for president of that country.

“I got a message for Sean Penn,” Jean sang. “Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine.” Jean continued in the following line: “I got a message for Praswell/Even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you/Even though you only kicked eight bars in the Fugees.”

UPDATE: “Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti,” Penn’s reps responded in a statement via email. “As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system through the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous. More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs. As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.”

Pending closer statistical analysis, the Music Mix has concluded that Pras likely contributed substantially more than eight bars’ worth of rhymes to the Fugees’ discography, though perhaps not quite so many bars as Jean or Lauryn Hill.

Click through to the jump to see a high-res clip of Jean’s performance, courtesy of Hot 97, the radio station that sponsored the show. What do you think of Jean’s latest jabs? Do remarks like this help or hurt his increasingly quixotic presidential campaign?

Jane's Addiction, Duff McKagan part ways

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

duff-mckaganImage Credit: Charley Gallay/Getty Images for ActivisionWell, that didn’t last long: Just five months after Jane’s Addiction announced former Guns N’ Roses rocker Duff McKagan as a new member, the band has decided to part ways with the bassist.

“Hey we wanted to thank Duff for helping us write songs for our new record,” Jane’s Addiction said in an email, Reuters reports. “We love the songs we worked on with him — and the gigs were a blast — but musically we were all headed in different directions. From here Duff is off to work on his own stuff so we wish him all the best.”

McKagan was brought on board to briefly perform with the band, and help with new material for an upcoming album — the first in seven years for Jane’s Addiction. According to frontman Perry Farrell’s Twitter, the bassist has other plans for the future: “Jane’s wishes Duff much luck with his band Loaded. What a fun time we all had working together. Look out for his record and tour this fall.”

McKagan was the band’s fifth bassist since Jane’s Addiction’s formation in 1985. So who should next occupy the vacated spot? Token?
