Ronnie Wood on his new solo album, the sober life, and the Rolling Stones' next move: The Music Mix Q&A

Ronnie-WoodImage Credit: Jack EnglishThe past few years have been turbulent for Ronnie Wood. Since 2008, the Rolling Stones guitarist has made headlines for a rehab stint, a divorce, and an arrest for alleged assault (the case ended with an official caution). Now a clean and sober Wood is hoping to put the drama behind him. On Sept. 28, indie label Eagle Records will release I Feel Like Playing, his first solo album since 2001. The bluesy set, which Wood began recording in December 2008, features contributions from famous friends like Slash, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Bobby Womack, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Eddie Vedder, and more.

Wood, 63, called the Music Mix yesterday from the NYC hotel where he’s staying to tell us all about the new album — and what the future holds for the Rolling Stones. Read on for our lightly edited Q&A.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: In the credits for this album, you give “special thanks to [Hollywood producer] Steve Bing, for starting this whole process.” How was he involved?
RONNIE WOOD: I was in Los Angeles, and he loves to hear me play. He said, “Hey, Ronnie, do you fancy taking this studio? I booked the House of Blues for you. Do you want to make some tracks?” And I said, “Wow, I wasn’t planning on it.” And he said, “Oh, I just love the way you play, man, come on, please, get out there.” I said, “Well, I’ve got a few ideas kicking around in the back of my head.” So I went up with [Stones backup singer] Bernard Fowler. Steve Bing said, “I’ve got [drummer] Jim Keltner up there, and [singer/keyboardist] Ivan Neville.” I rang up Flea, who had said, “If you make an album, I’ll be on it with you.” He was in town, and then me and Bernard went up, and we cut “Spoonful.” That was really spontaneous. It just happened in one or two takes. We took it all from there. I had these phrases in my head, like, “I don’t think so,” and I also had, “Why’d you wanna go and do a thing like this for?” I’d just left home at the time. So I started to put melody to some of these words…What we would do is sit in my hotel room and plan it in the afternoon, and go up in the studio and make ‘em in the evening. READ FULL STORY »

Jack Johnson and Andy Samberg beat the hell out of each other in new video for 'At or With Me'

Andy-Samberg-jack-johnsonImage Credit: Landmark/PR Photos; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosI have no beef with shoe-averse troubadour Jack Johnson. I’ve met him a couple of times, and he seems like one of the good guys. But there’s no doubt that the first half of the new, Andy Samberg-featuring clip for his track “At or With Me” is the dullest thing I’ve seen since placing second in the 2007 Swedish Paint-Watching Championships (damn you, Sven Erlundsonsonson!).

And then…

Well, to say more would spoil the fun. Suffice to say, people who like Johnson’s brand of breezy rock and people who like the idea of Johnson getting punched in the face finally have a video they can enjoy together.

Take a look at the video after the jump, and tell us what you think.

Dave Matthews Band fans react to alleged bombing attempt: 'I was very freaked out'

dave-matthews-bandImage Credit: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic.comDave Matthews Band fans have told EW how shocked they were to discover a man allegedly attempted to plant a bomb near Chicago’s Wrigley Field shortly after DMB had finished playing there on Saturday night. This Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported that a Lebanese immigrant named Sami Samir Hassoun had planted what he believed to be a bomb in a garbage bin outside the bar Sluggers. The “bomb” was in fact a harmless device given to him by undercover agents and Hassoun was immediately apprehended by police and FBI agents. According to the Tribune, Hassoun was motivated by a desire to undermine Mayor Richard Daley.

Dave Matthews Band fan Jeanette Balkiewicz, who attended the show in Chicago, told EW  she found about the attempted bombing after DMB bassist Stefan Lessard wrote a tweet on Tuesday night in which he thanked the FBI for being “10 steps ahead of the Wrigley terrorist.” “I was very freaked out about it,” said Balkiewicz. “It was just like, ‘Wow, if the FBI was involved in it, that would be scary.’ I don’t think anybody thinks there’s any connection to the band. But we go to a lot of these shows and we’re always in this big huge crowd, and it’s just something to think about.”

Michelle Gust is another DMB fan who attended Saturday’s concert. “I was at Sluggers after the show,” she said. “We didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. We had no reason to suspect anything until we saw that story. I’ve gone to 26 [DMB] shows and I’ve never had a feeling of being insecure or feeling like I was at risk or anything. It kind of shocks you into a sense of anything can happen at any time.”

However, both Gust and Balkiewicz are adamant they have not been put them off attending future DMB shows. “I’ve seen them in concert 122 times, and I have put in requests for six shows on the fall tour,” says Balkiewicz. “I’m not scared to go to another show. I know it had nothing to do with the band.”

Were you at the show on Saturday? What did you think when you found about the alleged bombing attempt?

'Lost' star Jorge Garcia and Weezer jam onstage together: Watch the video here

Last night at an Axe-sponsored party in Los Angeles, Weezer were joined onstage by their album-cover star and muse Jorge Garcia, perhaps better known as Lost‘s beatific, spherical Hurley.

In the two videos posted after the jump, Garcia first introduces the band’s 2001 single “Hash Pipe” (bonus points to the girl in the balcony working it like she’s in the wings on the Crüe’s Theatre of Pain tour circa ’85); but he actually joins them on “Perfect Situation,” sharing vocal duties with Rivers Cuomo.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Who would you nominate for induction this year?

KISS-Rush-The-SmithsImage Credit: Everett Collection; Fin Costello/Redferns/Getty Images; Pete Cronin/Redferns/Getty ImagesYes, it’s that time of year again. On September 28, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will announce the list of nominations for 2011 induction, and countless arguments will erupt over who got nominated and didn’t deserve it, who didn’t get nominated and did deserve it, and what this whole thang we call “rock and roll” means anyway.

But why wait until then? Who do you think should be nominated (remembering that an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years ago)? The list of eligible acts is a long one and includes T.Rex, Bon Jovi, The Smiths, Rush, Joan Jett, Ice-T, Duran Duran, Beastie Boys, Peter Tosh, Alice Cooper, and last year’s unsuccessful nominees KISS, Donna Summer, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Personally, if I had any say in the matter, I’d nominate cult British folkies Fairport Convention. But, hey, maybe that’s one of the reasons I don’t have a say in the matter.

What about you?

Susan Boyle to release Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' as first album single, possibly sing unknowingly about heroin

lou-reed-susan-boyleImage Credit: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images; Janet Mayer/PR PhotosShe may not have been allowed to perform it on America’s Got Talent two weeks ago, but Susan Boyle will officially release Lou Reed’s elegiac 1972 ballad “Perfect Day” as the first single from her upcoming second album The Gift, due November 9.

The sweet, church-going lady has taken on substance-tinged rock gods before, crooning lines like “I know I’ve dreamed you a sin and a lie” and “Let’s do some living after we die” when she covered the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses.”

But Reed’s raw ballad has long been associated, rightly or not, with heroin use—attached to Reed’s own well-documented predelictions, of course, but also, famously, to the 1996 film Trainspotting‘s iconic scene of Ewan McGregor injecting his way to a watery narcotic Narnia.

Boyle is hardly the only one to re-imagine “Perfect Day”: Duran Duran reached the top 30 with their take in 1995, and artists ranging from Patti Smith to Coldplay have recorded or performed the song live.

But does it belong on SuBo’s album alongside Christmas hymns like “Away in a Manger” and “O Holy Night”? (She will also offer her version of Leonard Cohen’s infinitely reproduced “Hallelujah,” perhaps the only song that can claim cover versions by Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Jeff Buckley, Bon Jovi, kd lang, opera star Renee Fleming, and untold numbers of talent-show hopefuls.)

If “Day” does become a hit for the 49-year-old church-choir member and renowned cat lover, it also won’t strictly be a first; Christian pop outfit Sixpence None the Richer made the La’s 1988 single “There She Goes,” long said to be an ode to street opiates, a hit again in 1999.

Lady Gaga responds to Don't Ask, Don't Tell defeat

Categories: Lady Gaga

Lady-GagaImage Credit: Cliff Kucine/Getty ImagesLady Gaga, who gave a speech in Maine on Monday, continued the drumbeat for the repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, even as Senators balked at a bill that would open the door to changing the controversial restrictions on openly homosexual soldiers serving in the armed forces. Gaga posted a message on her website, writing, “Today was an enormous disappointment, for myself, and for many young American people. Not only because Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was not repealed by our senators, but moreover because legislative procedure is being abused to stop public business, public debates, from happening while America is watching…. I will keep fighting, I will not give up.”

The singer also tweeted to Arizona Republican John McCain, “the language in defense bill says it will not enforce DADT repeal until pentagon review + president signs. Why block debate?”

McCain hadn’t responded from his own Twitter account.

Stone Temple Pilots tour postponed following Scott Weiland's 'confusing' appearance

stone_temple_pilotsSome five weeks into tour—and several days after an unsettling appearance in Houston, Texas—Stone Temple Pilots have officially rescheduled a dozen dates in order to “take a short break.”

According to Craig Hlavaty of The Houston Press, the band took to the Woodlands stage on Sunday an hour or so after openers Black Rebel Motorcyle Club. He writes: “A report about Sunday night cannot come without word on Weiland’s condition onstage, in light of his lateness.  He seemed off mentally, a little too meandering and talkative, bringing up his own past drug and alcohol abuse. At one point he did claim that he traded the hard stuff for boozing.”

In response to a flood of reader comments, many of them expressing extreme disappointment with the short set, Weiland’s odd behavior, and purported use of backing tapes, Hlvatay later elaborated: “Weiland’s banter in between songs was odd and confusing. He touched on using inner-ear monitors, the band’s first gigs, his own past drug use, what grunge means to him and why bands don’t destroy gear anymore. It just so happens we didn’t make the review about all this because we wanted to review the music, and not poke easy fun at what looked to be a public meltdown.”

He does also note that the band’s late start may have been due to travel difficulties; a commenter who works at a nearby airport posted that the band was delayed by management and airline miscommunication, and that Weiland had not yet landed in Houston when openers BRMC took to the stage.

Cee Lo bumps up the release of 'Lady Killer' album riding 'F-- You' success

Cee-Lo-greenWith his spiteful old-school cut “F**k You” climbing the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Cee Lo Green has chosen to strike while the iron is hot. Instead of the December release Elektra had originally planned for his new Lady Killer, the album has been bumped up a month to November 9. At a time when labels are more likely to push back album releases or shelve them altogether, this is refreshing news. “F— You” is an internet sensation and a wonderful song, but it’s currently No. 36 on the Hot 100. As good as that may be, it’s no “Crazy.” At least not yet. Elektra pushing up Lady Killer‘s release shows that they honestly believe in the project–even without super obvious statistics to stand on.

What do you think of Cee Lo and Elektra’s November 9 decision? Will you buy his album? Let us know.
