Ellen DeGeneres signs British singer to her eleveneleven label

Ellen-Degeneres-Tom-AndrewsImage Credit: Michael Rozman/Warner BrosEllen DeGeneres announced today she has signed another artist to her music label, 16-year-old British singer Tom Andrews. The newest member of the eleveneleven roster revealed on Ellen that he started singing three years ago when his mother entered him into a talent contest. Andrews then treated DeGeneres’ audience to a version of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

Andrews is the second eleveneleven artist. In May, DeGeneres signed Greyson Chance, who became a YouTube phenomenon with his version of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.”

You can watch Andrews’ encounter with Ellen, and performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” after the break.

'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' soundtrack: Star Charlie Day explains why listening to the show's music is like 'huffing paint through your ears'

Charlie-Day There aren’t many shows that would hype a soundtrack with the slogan, “It’s like huffing glue through your ears.” Then again, there aren’t many—or any—shows like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, the boozy, anarchic sitcom whose sixth season debuts tonight on FX and whose first collection of featured music was released earlier this month. “That was not my idea,” says Charlie Day, who co-created the show and essays the role of the unhinged, and paint-huffing, “Charlie.” “But I wish I could take credit, and I do imagine you will get a similar sensation when you listen to it.”

The soundtrack rounds up the soothing muzak that punctuates and somehow perfectly complements the show’s mayhem. How did the It’s Always Sunny… team come up with the idea to mix easy listening vibes with their characters’ hard living ways? “The original pilot took place in Los Angeles,” explains Day. “All the characters were actors and we had this sort of ‘cha-cha’ version of ‘Hooray for Hollywood.’ FX loved the show, but wanted to take it out of the entertainment industry. We had a music supervisor called Ray Espinola and we said, ‘Give us everything you have in a sort of Leave It to Beaver with a big band-swing kind of feel,’ and the majority of the songs are from what he sent over. When you set it against what these characters were doing—which often times can be perceived as quite despicable, or wrong—it really disarmed the audience. It just became our go-to library of songs.”

The soundtrack includes the show’s theme tune, “Temptation Sensation” by Heinz Kiessling—a number whose excitable, suggestive title could not be more at odds with its mellifluous nature. “Yeah, it’s much more a title for a pornographic film,” laughs Day. “Some of these have the most bizarre titles for what they are: ‘Hotsy-Totsy,’ ‘Honey Bunch.’ We were leaning towards ‘Off Broadway’ to be the theme song. But John Landgraf, the president of the network, really liked ‘Temptation Sensation’ and he put his foot down. Now I’m happy it’s the theme tune. But it is an odd title.”

Tragically not included on the soundtrack are any songs from the show’s berserk rock opera “The Nightman Cometh.” Day acknowledges is an omission that is bound to disappoint many members of the sitcom’s rabid fan base. “The fans really love the original music from the show and I’d love to sit down and record some of it and give it to them,” he says.  “That must be done!”

Those who need reminding of quite why that must be done should check out the clip after the break, where you’ll also find a soothing slice of “Temptation Sensation.”

Are you tempted to buy the soundtrack? Or disappointed by the absence of “Day Man” and the rest of the homegrown Sunny tunes?

Lady Gaga is Most Searched for Female on the internet: Why do we love her so much?

lady-gagaImage Credit: Theo Wargo/WireImage.comGaga fatigue? Who’s suffering from that? Certainly not our U.K. Music Mixers across the pond. MTV reports that Lady Gaga‘s 2008 debut album, The Fame, has trumped rock band Oasis’ record for the most weeks on the U.K. charts, according to Guinness World Record organization. Several singles from the The Fame, including “Poker Face” and “Just Dance,” have charted in their top 75 for a stretch of 154 straight weeks. That beats Oasis’ streak of 134 weeks.

Gaga’s also earns the title of the Most Searched-For Female on the Internet, pushing reigning champ Sarah Palin aside in the 2011 edition of the Guinness records book. It just never ends with Gaga. One day she’s on the cover of a magazine in a meat bathing suit. Next she’s accepting awards at the VMAs. And lets not forget that she is the queen of Twitter.

What do you think it is about Gaga that makes her so irresistible? Maybe it’s her big records and videos that are more like short movies. Or is is those wacky outfits? Let us know what you think.

Watch Florence + the Machine perform live at SIRIUS

florence-welchImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/Wireimage.comIf you watched the Video Music Awards, there’s a good chance Florence + Machine’s stellar performance might still be lingering in your mind. Well you and everybody else. Following her appearance at the VMAs over the weekend, her debut album Lungs soared to No. 2 on the iTunes album chart, and the single “Dog Days Are Over” jumped from No. 105 to claim the No. 9 spot on the overall singles chart. Need more proof that she’ll soon be taking America by storm? Post-VMAs she was the No. 1 search on Google, and over in the Twitterverse the band received 1.7 thousand tweets per minute. And such is life for Florence Welch.

“It was so surreal,” singer Florence Welch told us when we caught up with her at SIRIUS satellite radio’s New York offices, where she was taping a performance for The Spectrum a few days after the VMAs. “I couldn’t believe I was living in post-VMA time frame. It honestly felt like I was going to be about to play the VMAs forever.” Next on the British-born star’s agenda is a U.S. tour, followed by recording her second album, due sometime in 2011.

With a guitarist and harpist at her side, Welch belted out “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up),” “Cosmic Love,” and “Dog Days Are Over” to a small group of people in the SIRIUS studio. Check out this video of her performance after the jump. Welch’s segment will air Monday at 4 p.m. (ET) on SIRIUS channel 18 and XM channel 45. READ FULL STORY »

Lil Wayne releases 'I'm Not a Human' video, shows off black light tattoos: Watch here

lil-wayne-tatsMost recently appearing in label mate Drake’s “Miss Me” video, we knew the incarcerated Lil Wayne shot several clips before entering his Rikers Island cell last spring. So when he phoned into a radio station last month to announce that he’ll be releasing his I Am Not a Human Being EP on his September 27 birthday–before he’s released from jail, I assumed Wayne had at least one video in the can to promote it. And yesterday he proved me right, dropping the video to its rock-hop single “I’m Not Human.”

In the dim video, Wayne shows off a few black light tattoos he got just before the shoot, some puckered lips and stars. “I want everybody to know beforehand, when you see the black light and you see the kiss and the stars, don’t think that I got some s— painted on me. That is a tattoo, he says in some brief behind-the-scenes footage that surfaced online this morning. “These are black light tattoos. The s— hurt… The best thing about the black light tattoo is that when you cut the light on, you can’t see them.”

Are you anxious for Wayne to get out this winter? Looking forward to new music from him? Check out the video after the jump and let us know if you think the added pain Wayne endured was worth it. READ FULL STORY »

Katy Perry still No. 1 on Billboard hot 100 chart

Katy Perry keeps her No. 1 standing on the Billboard hot 100 chart for a second straight week with “Teenage Dream.” Eminem‘s “Love the Way You Lie,” also holds at No. 2. While Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are” improves, moving up to No. 3.

Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” backs up to No. 4, And “I Like It” by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull stays at No. 5. Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” remains at No. 6. But Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” creeps up two places to No. 7. Ke$ha’s “Take It Off” sits still at No. 8. Flo Rida’s David Guetta-assisted “Club Can’t Handle Me,” leaps four spots to No. 9. And closing out the top 10, Taylor Swift‘s “Mine,” falls three slots to No. 10.

It was a relatively slow week on the chart. Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)”, which debuted this week at No. 75, is expected to hurdle its way to the top 10 next week. And Bruno Mars is steadily inching towards No. 1. What do you think the chart will look like next week? Let us know.

Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J play new Halo game, act like children

halo-reach-reviewImage Credit: MicrosoftHalo: Reach, the latest iteration in the Halo franchise, was released yesterday, and some surprising inclusions to the legions of nerds already playing online are hip-hop artists Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J.

The two filmed a Funnyordie.com video of their game along with Wayne Newton — a.k.a. Mr. Las Vegas — and Chuck actor Zachary Levi, which provided at least one major revelation: Celebrities and seminal gangster rappers are just as infantile while playing video games as the rest of us.

Although Snoop seems to be the better player (he’s got the build of a gamer, after all), LL Cool J utters what probably should have been the tagline of the game: “Halo: Reach: You can’t ‘Reach’ me, baby.” Snoop, who plays under the handle “thedoggfather,”pays him back with an obscene in-game celebratory gesture. Way to keep it classy, Snoop.

Check out their gaming skills in the semi-NSFW video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Kanye West pens XXL magazine story addressing Taylor Swift incident: 'I felt very alone'

Categories: Kanye West, Taylor Swift

Kanye-XXLYou’ve read the tweets and seen the televised performance. Get ready for the latest stop in Kanye West‘s tour of contrition for interrupting Taylor Swift that one time last fall: The rapper has written a cover story for XXL magazine‘s October 2010 issue.

According to excerpts first published by Popeater, West addresses the Video Music Awards faux pas in detail. “I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally,” West writes. “And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV.” He adds: “The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend. How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry.’ Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.”

West goes on to discuss how he felt after the Swift run-in cratered his public image. “I knew I wasn’t in a great spot publicly after the incident, but I would just block it out and work as hard as possible and let my work be my saving grace,” he writes. “In a way, I had thrown a Molotov cocktail at my own career, and it gave me an opportunity, for the first time, to go away and find out who I was. Because I felt very alone.”

In addition to the cover story, XXL also made West the creative director of a special 40-page section in the magazine.

What do you think of West’s latest public statement? Will you read the full story when XXL arrives on stands Sept. 28?

Beyonce working on new 'party music,' says songwriter Sean Garrett

Categories: Beyonce, Divas!

beyonceImage Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comIs Beyoncé readying a new album? Songwriter-producer Sean Garrett, who’s previously teamed with Queen B for tracks like “Video Phone,” “Diva,” “Get Me Bodied,” and “Upgrade U,” says it’s true.

“I am going in the studio with Beyoncé this week to work on her next record,” Garrett told the Music Mix at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. “I think we are doing a lot of up-tempo records for this one. She’s in such a good place right now in life that she is interested in making party music, definitely.” A rep for Beyoncé was unable to confirm her recording plans at this time.

What do you think of this news? Excited by the prospect of Beyoncé and Garrett making more upbeat party music? Let’s hear it. —Additional reporting by Carrie Bell

Kanye West returns to 'The Cleveland Show': Exclusive sneak peek at a hilarious scene

kanye-west-Cleveland-ShowYou never know where Kanye West is going to pop up lately. One night he’s debuting an awesome new song at the VMAs in Los Angeles, the next he’s rocking New York City’s Yankee Stadium with big bro Jay-Z — and on Sept. 26, the rap superstar is heading back to scenic Stoolbend, Va. More precisely, it’s his cartoon alter ego, “Kenny West,” who’s returning to that fictional town for the season two premiere of Fox’s The Cleveland Show. For an exclusive sneak peek at West’s animated guest appearance, available only right here at the Music Mix, read on.

As you may recall from this spring, when he first appeared on The Cleveland Show, Kenny West is a local rapper on the rise. But by season two, Kenny’s career is on the rocks. His savior is none other than our hero Cleveland Brown, who helps Kenny write a hit single called, ahem, “Be-Cleve in Yourself.” Hit the jump to see Kanye/Kenny perform the inspirational banger (“My game was timid, now my flow much bolder/Got a chubby brown angel on my shoulder”) with Cleveland as his hypeman. Pretty funny, no?

The Cleveland Show‘s second season premiere airs Sept. 26 at 8:30 P.M. Eastern/Pacific on Fox. Are you looking forward to tuning in? How does “Be-Cleve in Yourself” stack up next to the real Kanye West’s recent music? Speak up in the comments, below. READ FULL STORY »
