'Glee' exclusive: Hear Cory Monteith cover R.E.M.'s 'Losing My Religion'

Next week’s episode of Glee is one of the series’ best episodes yet: a moving hour devoted to the subject of religion. Look for the episode to feature a slew of great spirituality-themed covers including Billy Joel’s “Only the Good Die Young,” Barbara Streisand’s “Papa Can You Hear Me,” The Beatles “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” and R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion,” performed by a faith-questioning Finn (Cory Monteith). For Monteith, the chance to tackle this tune was a dream come true. “So cool,” he tells EW. “I’ve been a huge Michael Stipe fan all my life.” Lucky for you Gleeks (and Music Mix-ers), EW has obtained an exclusive stream of Monteith’s version of the R.E.M. hit. Listen to Monteith pay homage to Stipe below…

What did you think of Monteith’s version, Music Mix-ers? Is it as good as the original?

    I love it! Very impressed!

    • Tim (@rural_juror)

I love me some Frankenteen, but they should NOT give Monteith any more solos. Singing or dancing.

      • Amber

Totally Disagree. Cory is Fantastic in this song and Damned if I wouldn’t be upset if Frankenteen doesn’t dance at least once an episode! it’s an absolute must.

      • yvettec11

You couldn’t be more wrong! Cory Monteith may not be the best singer of the bunch but I still love his voice. He’s sang some of my favorite songs from the show and I’m tired of people saying that he shouldn’t be given more solos.

      • Caroline

Tim – I’ve heard worse. Cory’s not the greatest, but he’s not the worst.

  • McProphet

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- I LOVE Glee, but I have no clue why they insist on having Finn sing all these songs when it’s quite obvious that Cory Monteith CANNOT SING! I mean, yeah thanks to Auto-tune anyone can cut an album (I’m looking at you Ke$sha!) but seriously, can we have Puck or new guy Sam tackle some of the male solos this season?!?

    • Yes.

I agree with you. LOVE Glee, but Cory is not a great singer. However, I think he actually does a pretty good job with this song. And I am a really big fan of the original! and YES! MORE PUCK!!!!!

    • Haley

I think Cory did quite a good job with this. And he is just one of the singers. Puck also has a solo in the episode, but Mark has a kind of nasally quality in his voice that’s not for me. I like Cory’s voice much better.

    • gilbert

I don’t really detect that much autotune in this version, I think it’s OK.

      • chris

they can’t all be as good as lea and amber. that said, i still enjoyed this song – though not as much as i did the original, of course.

      • Gen of Montreal

But I detect a lisp. Never struck me before.

    • cait

cory was never any kind of singer. Finn isn’t really a singer. He was singing in the shower and he sounded pretty good. I think that Cory does it perfectly (He couldn’t be too good, or why would he never sing before?)

I like both Cory and Mark but have you heard Puck’s song preview for this week? I’m sure it’ll sound better with visual to it but it’s been cranked well up with autotune. Cory sounds great on this as it’s well within his range.

    • Josie

I agree with you for the most part about Cory’s singing but he actually doesn’t do all that bad in THIS song(can’t say that about most of his songs though). I’d also like to see more of the new guy, Sam, he was cute and he did “Billionaire” well.

      • ann

he did billionaire well, but his shower song was so terrible – I thought they were making the plot that Finn thought Sam was good – but everyone else wouldn’t.

    • Liza

I’d have agreed with you at the beginning of Glee, but I think Cory’s improvement is hard to miss, and I think he’s actually grown into a good singer. He sounded AMAZING on “Jessie’s Girl” and “Faithfully,” and I think he sounds great here, too. Just no more rapping, Cor, please…

      • Beth

I agree Liza that Cory is getting better. I think he did great on this one, and I loved Jessie’s Girl and Faithfully for him as well. This song, as well as those other two fit his voice really nicely and well within his range. I don’t understand why some are so harsh on the “non-broadway or diva” singers. Every singer has a different style, and for someone that didn’t really sing (or make a life out of singing) before the show … I think he’s doing very well!

    • Amy

To be fair, I saw the Glee tour this past summer in Chicago, and everyone sang live, with the exception of the two Vocal Adrenaline numbers (they had some intense choreography going on, there was no way they could do both). Anyway, Cory sounded just fine live, I’m surprised they use Auto-tune on everyone as much as they do, I was impressed with all of them.

    • Clay

Why should we pick on one cast member when all of them have their voices put through pitch correction and a dozen other processing effects?

      • Anders

Ele é muito lindo, deixa qaulquer uma louquinha, pena que já foi preso :Swww.luuh-mendonca.blogspot.com@Luaramendoncaa

I must really be missing something– since when is “I Want To Hold Your Hand” a spiritual song?!

    • McProphet

Since it was passed down from God herself to the Great John Lennon! Or that’s what every Beatle-maniac WANTS you to believe. I’m with you, I don’t get the reference.

      • Carrie #2

Hee hee that’s a good explanation!

    • Carrie #2

That said, Cory sounds absolutely fantastic on Losing my Religion, which I’m especially excited about since this is one of my favorite songs.

    • nodnarb

Well, “Losing My Religion” is not about religion either.

      • julie

yes, thank you. this song has nothing to do with religion. just because it’s in the title doesn’t mean it’s a religous song.

      • Carrie #2

Hey, anything’s closer than “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.”

      • Lola

Yes, the song was not about religion, but Glee is all about re-interpreting songs to fit a storyline. To whomever wrote this article, to ask if this version is as good as the original is ridiculous, it could never, ever be as good as the original. I will say though, that I do like it and look forward to seeing Cory perform as opposed to just listening to it.

    • santana

If you click that link for gleethemusic and listen to the way they did “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, it will make a little more sense.

      • Jenn

Is it similar to the version sung in “Across the Universe?”

      • Plato

The “Across the Universe” version is beautiful.

      • Carrie #2

Well, I freaking LOVE Across the Universe so if it’s anything like that I will die of happiness. :)

      • Emily

I Wanna Hold Your Hand is sung by Kurt, and it’s beautiful! I don’t usually love his voice, but, I got tears in my eyes just now. <3

      • Lola

love love love this version of I wanna hold your hand. So beautiful and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. Had no idea it was Kurt when I first heard it.

    • BJ

“Losing My Religion” is not a spiritual song either. The phrase “losing my religion” is old southern slang that means “losing my temper.” REM is from Georgia.

      • Nick

Thanks for pointing this out. I was going to if no one else did. Stupid reason to include this song in the show.

      • nan

If Finn chose the song in the episode, it seems really plausible. LOL He’s the one who chose to sing Good Vibrations as a “funk” song just because it was by Marky Mark and the “Funky” Bunch. LOL

      • MemphisMom

Around here, there is another connotation. I’ve heard people say “I’m so tired, I’m losing my religion.” I think that REM left it ambiguous on purpose and it does have a lot of lyrics that suggest something beyond losing one’s composure. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

  • Joanna

I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!! I love the original but Cory really surprised me!!!!

  • Meg

I think Losing My Religion pretty much sounds the same, only with a different voice. Not bad, just… the SAME.

  • Sarah

He sounds SO good!! I’m so excited to see this!

  • Mariah

OH MY GOD. I am impressed!! it’s great!!

  • Dana

He sounds great! I really like his voice :)

  • Naomi

OMG thanks so much for this!!! Love it!!

  • Selina

    OMG!! LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH!!

  • Jenna

Not as good as REM, but its still really, really good :D

  • naddy

    <3 <3 <3 love it. tuesday pls come early…

  • Kath

I think this song fits Cory’s voice wonderfully. I love this song and I really want to SEE how Cory sings it on the show. He was on Jimmy Fallon and made it sound very interesting. Thank you EW for bringing it so fast.

  • stef

Cory is my favorite male singer on the show. I love this!

  • perri

Among all the male singers on Glee, I think Cory was the best choice to sing this particular song. It just fits his voice color.
