'Glee' cast breezes past Beatles' 'Billboard' record

glee-castImage Credit: Miranda Penn Turin/FoxThe cast of Fox’s Glee is officially bigger than the Beatles. That’s per Billboard, which notes that the TV cast will score six new entries on this week’s Hot 100 singles chart, bringing their career total up to 75 charting singles. The Fab Four made it onto the Hot 100 a mere 71 times back in the day. Still comfortably ahead of Glee (for now) are James Brown, with 91 charting singles, and all-time record-holder Elvis Presley, with 108.

Cynical types might observe that by sending all those cover versions to iTunes after each show airs, Glee has already released more “singles” than the Beatles did in their entire career. Also, it’s hard to compare the the many actor/singers who make up the Glee cast to a discrete band or solo artist like the Beatles or Elvis.

Still, numbers don’t lie, so let’s be happy for the Glee gang. What do you think of their latest chart accomplishment? Let us know in the comments.

Tell me they are bigger than the Beatles in 45 years, because in 45 years the response will be “Glee who?” while The Beatles will still be selling records.

    • Dede

As with baseball and Barry Bonds, I have one thing to say….asterisk. Only doing cover songs is cheating your way to the top of the charts.

    • suckers!

Only thespians and drama queens like Glee.

  • Temp

Not really the same thing, I mean, the Beatles did have to write all those 70 songs themselves. Clearly writing 70 top 100 hits is a much bigger accomplishment than doing 70 karaoke covers

    • A

I was just going to say the same thing. Glee has 70+ covers and not one original song!!

  • Amy

It’s because they’re all covers of popular songs. The original artists are really the ones who deserve the credit.

  • Dave

“The cast of Fox’s Glee is officially bigger than the Beatles.”
A completely ignorant, moronic, and juvenile statement.

    • jen

      Agreed.

  • Erin

  • Jayne

I think your all being very negative fair enough i get all of your points but although all glee do is covers they still do great covers of them and sometimes reinvent the style of the like poker face and sometimes that can be harder than making a song up from scratch.

    • jen

That has to be one of the stupidest things I’ve read in a very long time.

      • Mary Ann

        Amen to that!

    • Jane

Glee’s version of Poker Face is based on Lady Gaga’s version of the song that she does in concerts without her band.

It’s just a shirt at the end of the day and if you don’t like don’t buy it SIMPLE as that.Christams hasn’t been about reglion for a long time you ask any one in the steert what is christmas about and it’s spending quality time with loved ones and friends.NOT STUPID GOD who wasn’t even real if you don’t beleive me just google darwin and read the real truth.

  • Jayne

well thats my opinion and i dont think it’s stupid

    • matt

I’m guessing it’s your grammar that she’s most offended by.

    • sri

I’m offended by your excessive, whiney run-on sentence. You are totally clueless if you think it’s easier to write a song than it is to cover it. That’s like saying it was easier for Newton to write his Principia Mathematica than it is for some high school student to memorize and regurgitate one of its aspects on a test. Jayne, I know you’ll need this explained, so here you go: Newton was a science guy who did science stuff. Look it up, though I’m certain the concept I’m trying to portray is too abstract for the likes of you. West side!!!!

      • Jayne

I can’t believe your rudeness. You clearly weren’t brought up in a home that taught you to respect for others opinions. And the likes of you make me annoyed with what you think clever writing, to try and leave people speechless just so you can think your point of view is right. Well tough you’ve not left me speechless and you go on about my whiny run-on sentences look at your massive paragraph and all you do in whine. Get a grip and take my opinion as it is, if you want to take it as rubbish fine but there’s no need to insult my intelligence.

    I LOVE GLEE.

  • Renaton

“Glee” got all those Madonna covers in because they are a hot show on tv, I agree, but they still were only Madonna covers.

The merit and and sucess of those Madonna songs existed way before the whole “Glee” thing, and the same can be said about every other song they entered the chart with.

It’s an American Idol performance. It happens once, and that’s it. The performance has it’s merit of the week, but it only got there in the first place because the song had an impact before.

In the end, what I mena is… THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

    • Renaton

*It’s LIKE an American Idol performance.

      That’s what I meant to say, sorry…

  • Renaton

    *mean

ok, I must try typing slower, lol

  • Jim Lynes

When they release their own “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “The Beatles(the White Album)” I will be impressed. Until then, stop with the ridiculous comparisons!

  • annie

omg, no way are they bigger than the Beatles. Yeah, in 40 years, or even in 20 or 10 years, they will be over. The Beatles will go on forever. And yeah no original songs.

    • Jose

Glee is a musical, week after week, they have a theme, they cover songs

  • Nicole

Well, at least Glee have paid their respects to the Beatles by completely butchering two of their songs.

  • Joe in Philly

It’s an utterly meaningless “accomplishment” — between the methodology used to compile the charts then and now, and the new technology (there was no iTunes to “release” singles, for one) and the many changes in the music business, not to mention what others have said about the Glee cast releasing all covers — and it’s every song from every episode. I love Glee but this is ridiculous.

    • Eric in Racine

Let’s face it (using your example of Billboard’s changing methodology) those 70 Glee hits were on the chart for one, possibly two weeks. Take 10 of the Beatles hits and they probably spent a 70 WEEKS on the charts. THAT’S an accomplishment!
