BET helped YouTube sensation Antoine Dodson add about three minutes to his designated 15 minutes of fame last night. Dodson, who became an Internet celeb after his rescue rant about a Huntsville, Ala., rapist on the loose was remixed and auto-tuned this summer, surprised an audience of the rap world’s elite at the 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards last night. He and Michael Gregory — creator of the “Bed Intruder Song” — appeared at the ceremony, much to the delight of the audience. Shots of the crowd reveal more than a few laughing faces — though it doesn’t appear that Keri Hilson was amused. And really, neither was I. It was one of the cornier moments of the night. Looked to me that most of the people doubled over were laughing at Dodson and not with him. I just changed the channel. Did you?
Check out the clip — and the original viral video starring Dodson — after the jump.
How much longer do you think Dodson has in the limelight?

Whatevs, I love this guy!
Can you pretend you’re there and be suicidal? PLease
I stole your hateraid jacknut, now what the hell you gonna do?
first off why don’t you start by proof reading you idiot . “uncomfortable and suicidal “is” I was there” your dumb ass
sorry brad wete, but you’re an idiot and clearly can’t read people. these awards shows are supposed to be fun, and clearly everyone was highly tickled by the mini-performance. way to project your own mean-spirited reaction onto a whole audience of smiling and laughing people. they all wanted to be there, and they were all having a good time. the song, like the newscast, is hilarious. get over yourself.
I think that’s the trend to get a very out of left field out of nowhere song to get out to the public. Maybe one of the major hip-hop artists heard the song, was immediately hooked and booked Antoine to the awards. It’s really the infectiousness of the song. Maybe this is the way to get a record deal with YouTube instead of the long meetings with record execs in $5000 Armani suits in a boardroom to have them play your demo or tape.
Considering how many of those audience members were singing along, it looked like people were actually enjoying that little “performance.”
andrew garfield (social network, spidey reboot) sang this in an interview– it was hilarious! check it out if you haven’t seen it
oh and i don’t understand why you’re saying they were laughing at him, because it looked like quite a few people actually knew all the words to the song. it was comedic, and you can’t please everybody. i certainly don’t understand why anybody would think it is bad enough to write an online article about it… although i do appreciate it because i thought it was pretty hilarious.
I freaking LOVED that clip. He’s so embarrassed that he knows the words, but totally proud at the same time. God it was funny. He also succeeded in bumping up his ‘doable’ status at least 3 or 4 notches.
It rides on that Autotune trend so common in mainstream music these days and he sounds like a mix between Lil’Wayne and T-Pain with his voice. The music is similar to any of Lil’ Wayne’s songs with the beats and music.
Antoine, you seriously rock! Keep it up!
Antoine, get all the mileage you can out of it. Maybe this is the start of a music/acting career! Take advantage of the opportunities that may come with this success.
He also bought a home and moved his family out of the projects thanks to proceeds from this song. And he says he’s going to college and wants to open his own business. But hey, let’s try to be as negative as possible about this.
thank you.
Wow, that’s really cool. Thanks for the postive update.
I know right!?
that’s awesome!
awww… I love Antoine. I’ll watch anything he does.
In the brief shots of audience members reacting, people were singing and smiling, and you can obviously hear the cheers of the audience throughout. No one seems to be laughing AT the guy. You’re seeing what you want to see, and running with it just to fill up web space. Are you so desperate to get copy on EW.com that you have to try and put a negative slant on it?
I feel as if this wasnt the brightest idea of a white and a black man but i will Antoine this, at least he is trying to do something with the proceeds, no need to be negative and if youre white and being negative well remember that a white boy decided to take this and run withit Antoine didnt ask for it, it just happened so get it together. Either way i dont think anyone was embarrassed because he wouldve said no if he wasnt interested on doing the song on BET. Also many people in the audience were singing along I mean who doesnt know the bed intruder song. I cant even lie I laughed my behind off when I first saw it…
I laught at Antoine.
But I don’t see what’s corny about his BET performance.
He’s not “going off tune” here. The autotune is obscuring his actual pitch and beat at the end of each downbeat. If you listen to the actual news coverage, his voice is naturally lyrical all while being pissed off about this brainless, real crime that happened in his own home. That’s why they chose to use the clip for autotune, not just because it was unusual. The song is awesome not because it’s funny, but because it’s true, and he wasn’t afraid to tell the camera what he thought. People who think it’s popular only because it’s good to laugh at don’t know much about life.
(Was rsp to larry david. hit the wrong resp link.)
People were definitely laughing @ him not with him, but thts kinda the point
I don’t understand why people are getting so heated about this. He made good of a bad situation. he didn’t make the song, people approached him to do it. as a result, his family was blessed and were able to move out of the projects, where the crime happened. people make stupid songs all the time (soulja boy, waca flocka etc) and that’s ok. at least everyone knows antoine’s song is a joke…a very CATCHY joke. so stop with the hateration
Wow, what an incredibly jaded article from someone who’s never been in the projects nor experienced the raw emotion that comes from there. Brad, you sound like an uber-liberal uptight dick who thinks that black people can’t laugh at themselves, or make the best of adversity and tragedy. The people in the audience “got” Antoine. Antoine “gets” Antoine, and laughs along with everyone. Too bad you have such a narrow view of the world that you can’t think that someone from the projects with an outspoken and animated way of expressing himself is too stupid to be in on the fun.
