So sad! such a blow to the beach music scene! Do not think it will ever be the same… Gonna be weird not seeing General Johnson not singing at the beach anymore!
Without the General, we would not have beach music as we know it. He and Joe Pope were true pioneers. We are truly blessed for the sharing of his gifts.
I am so saddened by the loss of General Johnson…what a voice he had! Chairmen of the Board always rocked no matter where they were (best beach band in eastern North Carolina). My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Melissa Rouse – Grifton, NC
What a tragic loss. You will be missed terribly…but you will always STAND.
WILL SURELY MISS HIM…WHAT A SHOW THEY COULD DO. WENT TO SEE EVERY CHANCE I COULD.BEACH MUSIC LOST THE BEST
Back in the day, being a runaway-you would want to go to the Johnsons. There was lots of love, nurturing, and guidance-esp.from papa Johnson(Pete) Looking back and remembering Gen. N.J. thru the yrs. is like looking @ his father. Heartfelt wishes to family and Chairman family. Gone but not forgotten-(homegirl,Leah)
one of the greatest artists of all time!!!!!!!my husband and i will miss hearing his music . so sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We all were saddened to hear of the death of the maker of many of the memories from our college (The Citadel)and Ocean Drive days. We will never forget The Showmen or The Chairman and his songs will play at our parties forever. Thanks Norman.
Please pass along our condolences to his Family!
just a lost, he was the greatest, dance laugh cut up always could make you laugh, can remember first time I seen them in Myrtle Beach, what a lost but so much music lefted behind I play it to my grandbabies and teaching them how to shag, rest in peace and I am sure still singing with that wonderful, sexy voice
I met General standing in line for the bathroom at a Beach Music Concert in Emerald Isle back in the 1980s. He was one of a kind and always will be the king of beach music. This Carolina Girl will remeber him always.
Listened many years to them and use to travel with them driving for the band and Danny Woods. He will be missed by all. Have lots of many good memories and fun traveling with them all the different places. Deborah
