Black Eyed Peas party 'Dirty Dancing' style in 'The Time': Hear their new single now

BEP-dirty-dancingThe Black Eyed Peas sure do enjoy life. Their brand new single “The Time (the dirty bit)” takes a sample of Dirty Dancing jam “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” — already one of pop history’s tastiest slices of cheese — and turns it into an even more over-the-top dance party. “‘Cause I’m! Having! A good! Time! With you!” chant the Peas in unison. At this point, it’s fair to wonder, are these guys and gal ever not having a good time?

This appears to be the first single from The Beginning, the Peas’ upcoming follow-up to last year’s smash The E.N.D. I’m a Peas fan, but I have to admit that “The Time” didn’t give me the same immediate euphoria I experienced upon first hearing “I Gotta Feeling” or “Boom Boom Pow.” Those songs made me feel like I’d never encountered anything quite so transportingly catchy; in this case, of course, we’ve all heard the original sample a billion times, and the Peas’ additions come straight from their playbook of the past 18 months. But so what? “The Time” still has “hit” written all over it. No one does mindless fizzy fun like the Black Eyed Peas, even when they’re possibly slightly treading water.

But what do you think? Take a listen to “The Time” after the jump and let us know how you like it.

Sounds like someone should have followed their own advice before posting this comment.

I know Will.I.Am thinks he’s the most innovative person in the world, but this song is pretty lame. It sounds like a B-Side on The E.N.D

  • ryan

Not a fan of the song. Its not as “get up and partay and enjoy life” as their previous songs. Honestly, I was kind of bored.

  • Phil

I know it going to be torn apart for how they use the Dirty Dancing sample, but it is a typcial Peas dance party jam! And I really do wish Fergie would release another solo album, mainly because I love when she gets to showcase her vocal talents like singing the hook here & when she sang “Meet Me Half Way” off “The E.N.D.” This will hit #1 before Thanksgiving, guaranteed.

    • Jase

Agreed! More Fergie, less Peas please.

  • elevendcc

seriously, someone should slap the guy who invented autotune.

    • Carly

So agree. If I hear one more techno/club/autotuned song I think I’ll go crazy. Thats all top 40 radio is anymore. Can’t some pop artist get creative and swing music in a different direction please. More Fergie, for sure, less BEP. They need to take a break.

  • Kim

I didn’t think I could hate them more until I heard this song.

    • jack

this track is amazing maybe wont get to number one but still a top ten for sure

  • pat

horrid…and I’m a BEP fan. This is soo 2000 and late

  • graeme

    Love it.

  • Amy

It’s not the best BEP song, but I like it. I can definitely see myself dancing to it at a club. Additionally, I love any song where Fergie gets to showcase her amazing vocals.

  • Vicky

This just makes me want to download the original. I’ll PASS on this BEP dancey version.

  • Preston

I think this is very timely to Jennifer Grey competing on Dancing With the Stars. I liked the Bill Medley Jennifer Warnes song of 1987, but maybe the Black Eyed Peas wanted to take out the sentimentality and even the cheesiness out and put some funkiness into that original song in their update. I thought they wouldn’t put anything out until 2011, but they’re starting with this new song now.

  • Preston

Seems like a lot of the big names are putting out new singles. I don’t know why I’m not hearing it on the radio yet in my area. I can’t wait to hear the Black Eyed Peas’ new single. They had an unbelievable 5 hits off their last album in a year’s time! I hope they can continue that with Beginning!

    • Phil

The song was released on Will.i.am’s website yesterday, not even serviced to radio until early next week, unless they rush release it to stations before the close of business today to be put in rotation this weekend. Its a very bold gamble on behalf of Interscope Records in assuming they could release a new single and drop the album 5 weeks later..but since there is no actual model for how to release a successful album these days, maybe the gamble will pay off. People argue how annoying the Peas stuff gets after a few plays, but their digital sales stamp & weeks at #1 are undeniable. As I said earlier, I really hope Fergie gets some songs to really let loose on “The Beginning”. She is the best part of this single.

  • Ry

i thought it started off promisingly enough… the best part of the song is fergie singing the original tune… but the stuff in the middle doesn’t have much of a melody…. as a fan, i’m disappointed. hope they pick a different single!

  • Danielle

Oh…starts off really cool and catchy and then becomes unlistenable. The middle part is horrible, but, the beginning and ending are ace.

  • Biah

sriosly, i’m a BEP fan, but this song, i’m completly bored, i’m the only person in my class then like BEP , this , make me question about my music style.I thing I’ll be a metal fan!
