Jackie Evancho, child opera singer from 'America's Got Talent,' signs with Columbia

Filed under: Music, TV and tagged: , ,

Jackie-EvanchoImage Credit: Trae Patton/NBCJackie Evancho, the 10-year-old opera prodigy and runner-up from this season of America’s Got Talent, has signed with Syco/Columbia Records. It’s not too surprising that she’d sign with a label, given her viral popularity and obvious talent, and it’s even less surprising that she’d sign with Simon Cowell’s label, given her reality pedigree. Sometimes the world makes sense after all!

Evancho was a fan favorite on AGT, and week-to-week, the judges heaped more praise on her than any other contestant. It is a little creepy to hear what sounds like a fully matured operatic voice coming out of an adorable, tiny, blond child? It’s not…not creepy? But it’s also pretty stunning: READ FULL STORY »

Miami Police Department 'inadvertently' depicts Jay-Z as gang member: Whoops!

miami-police-site-jay-zJay-Z has been called the best rapper alive, the ultimate hip-hop entrepreneur, and one of President Obama’s favorite musicians. Would you ever confuse him with a dangerous gang member? The real Jay-Z is nothing of the kind, of course. Yet that’s the impression you might have gotten if you visited the Miami Police Department‘s website yesterday, where a PSA banner included two obvious sketches of the renowned recording artist next to the headline “REPORT GANG ACTIVITY.”

This bizarre faux pas was first discovered by the Miami New Times, which even identified the specific Jay-Z publicity shots that were ripped off for the anti-gang display. (By my estimation, the photos date from at least eight or nine years ago, back when Jay was still wearing throwback jerseys and t-shirts instead of bespoke suits.) After being brought to light by the New Times, the entire image featuring the ersatz Jay-Zs was promptly removed from the police department’s website. So what on earth happened here?

“It was something that was inadvertently done,” the Miami Police Department’s Officer Kenia Reyes tells EW. ”It was a mistake.” Reyes blamed the mix-up on the Miami PD’s computer department and declined to comment further.

A representative for Jay-Z had no comment on this story.

What do you think of the Miami Police Department’s odd mistake? Sound off in the comments.

Miley Cyrus' video for latest single 'Who Owns My Heart': Watch her vamp here!

Miley Cyrus‘ evolution into a pop-dance diva continues with the debut of the sexy new video for “Who Owns My Heart,” the latest single from her most recent album Can’t Be Tamed. Just like the perplexing lyrics in the song (“Who owns my heart? Is it love or is it art?”), the dancey, vampy video makes little effort to string together a storyline beyond Miley waking up in a bed, heading to the club to gyrate (complete with a head of crimped hair, scandalously low-cut gold lamé top, and lots of bangles), and then head back home. Truly, the theme of this video could be: hair! There’s a lot of it flying around! There’s almost a rave-y vibe to the whole thing, too. But who’s complaining? Not us! It’s fun! And really sultry! What more could you want? This song is a pulsy, possibly club-ready jam that deserves single status—and a frothy fun video like this, too. Catch the whole thumpa-thumpa deliciousness after the jump:

Lady Gaga and Elton John: Working together on the pop queen's new album?

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged: , , ,

lady-gaga-elton-johnImage Credit: Michael Caulfield/WireImage.comWill Elton John make an appearance on Lady Gaga‘s forthcoming album Born This Way? It seems very possible. EW recently spoke to Elton about The Union, his album collaboration with legendary pianist-songwriter Leon Russell, which hits stores Oct. 19, and the Rocket Man couldn’t help but bring up his love for all things Gaga. “I love her, and I love her ability to write,” he says. “I love the songs she writes.” A collab between the pair—who’ve become bosom buddies since performing together at January’s Grammy Awards (pictured here)—is a good possiblity. “I’d love to in the future,” John says of working with her. “I’d love to do that.” Then he elaborates: “There’s a chance I might do one track with her [for Born This Way], but it’s just, she’s so busy, and I’m so busy, we can never get together!” But, he adds, “I’ve already heard [Gaga's new album], so I think it’s more or less done. [Born This Way is expected to be released early next year.] Her record—it’s f—ing amazing. ‘Born This Way,’ which is the title song, will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive.’ This is the new ‘I Will Survive.’ That was the gay anthem. This is the new gay anthem. Actually, it’s not a gay anthem—it can apply to anybody.”

Auction controversy: Gallery owner tells EW about FBI raid on John Lennon item, rare Lady Gaga demos

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

john-lennon-immigration-appImage Credit: Henry S. Dziekan III/Getty ImagesComing across John Lennon’s signed and fingerprinted mid-1970s application for U.S. residence was a major coup for Gotta Have It! Collectibles CEO Pete Siegel. So he put a photo of the 10 inch by 10 inch cardboard form on the cover of a new auction catalog about a week ago — only to receive a phone call from the FBI within days. “They wanted to inspect the card, so we said, ‘Sure, come in,’” Siegel tells EW. Soon an FBI agent and someone from the Department of Homeland Security showed up at his midtown Manhattan gallery to ask questions about the item’s provenance. (Siegel says he got it from a consigner.) Yesterday morning, the FBI returned with a subpoena and seized the Lennon card.

“I don’t know why it was so important that they had to have it back,” says Siegel. Some reports have speculated that the card was government property, but Siegel says the federal agent mentioned nothing of the kind, only citing “an ongoing investigation” that he would not elaborate on. The FBI infamously put Lennon under surveillance during the 1970s, producing a lengthy file that was only released after a long court battle; it remains unclear what connection, if any, this unspecified current investigation has to do with that old one.

While Siegel complied with the FBI’s subpoena on his attorney’s advice, he still has his doubts about the raid. “My belief is that if it wasn’t John Lennon’s card, if it was anybody else’s, I would never have heard from authorities. I just think that the fact is, anything that has to do with the government and John Lennon, they believe shouldn’t be in the public’s hands.”

That said, the raid hasn’t exactly been bad for business. “I don’t know what’s going on,” says Siegel. “All I know is that I’ve never gotten more press in my life.” And he’s eager to hype the other 849 lots in his Gotta Have Rock and Roll online auction, which opened yesterday and will continue through Oct. 15.

Another particularly interesting item is a 2002 demo CD by Lady Gaga, who was still going by Stefani Germanotta at the time. Siegel says the pop star gave the disc in 2006 to then-manager Bob Leone, who is now putting it up for auction. The CD contains four previously unreleased tunes with names like “Kisses Are Quarters,” “Selfish Girl,” and “In a Dream.” No one besides Gaga, Leone, and the auctioneers has ever heard them.

“It’s a lot more subdued than the stuff she does today,” says Siegel. “She’s got a little bit of Jewel in her. She’s terrific.” He notes that the physical CD is being sold on its own as a collector’s item, not including the associated copyright, so whoever wins won’t be able to publish the rare tunes. “You can go ahead and put it on your iPod and love it and play the disc for your friends or whatever, but it’s totally illegal to [release the music] without the rights.”

Max Weinberg reveals he had open heart surgery in February

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged: ,

max-weinbergImage Credit: Carlos Marino/FilmMagic.comE Street member and longtime Conan O’Brien bandleader Max Weinberg has revealed he had open heart surgery in February, just a couple of weeks after the end of O’Brien’s stint on The Tonight Show. The drummer said that he first found out that had a problem with his heart 26 years ago, and that his condition became life-threatening a couple of years back. The surgery involved the repair of a valve.

“I can make a little news here, which I haven’t talked about to anybody,” the drummer told Fancast.com in an interview timed to coincide with tonight’s HBO documentary about the making of the Bruce Springsteen album Darkness on the Edge of Town. “On Feb. 8, I came to the end of a 26-year watchful, waiting odyssey that culminated in 12 hours of massively invasive open heart surgery.”

Weinberg intimated that this health issue was among the reasons why he is not joining O’Brien on his new TBS show. But the drummer also said that he has “never felt better. I thought I had energy before [but] I’m a thousand percent better. I’m playing better than I ever did. I’m not looking backward. I feel wonderful about where I’m at—physically, personally, professionally.”

Bruno Mars' 'Just the Way You Are' holds No. 1 spot on Billboard Hot 100 chart for third straight week

For a third consecutive week, Bruno Mars‘ “Just the Way You Are” is No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Far East Movement‘s techno party-starter “Like a G6″ flies up four spots to No. 2. Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” falls a spot to No. 3.

Nelly’s “Just a Dream” rises three to No. 4. Both falling one spot, Usher‘s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” is No. 5 and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” is No. 6. Eminem‘s Rihanna-assisted “Love the Way You Lie” slides back four places to No. 7. But the red-haired singer is at it alone on “Only Girl (in the World),” which holds at No. 8. Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It” stays at No. 9. And “Club Can’t Handle Me” by Flo Rida rounds out the top 10 at No. 10.

Have you been dancing to Far East Movement’s hit at the club? Is “Just the Way You Are” your song? Which song do you hope makes it in to the top 10 soon? Let us know.

'Glee' cast breezes past Beatles' 'Billboard' record

Filed under: Music, TV and tagged: , ,

glee-castImage Credit: Miranda Penn Turin/FoxThe cast of Fox’s Glee is officially bigger than the Beatles. That’s per Billboard, which notes that the TV cast will score six new entries on this week’s Hot 100 singles chart, bringing their career total up to 75 charting singles. The Fab Four made it onto the Hot 100 a mere 71 times back in the day. Still comfortably ahead of Glee (for now) are James Brown, with 91 charting singles, and all-time record-holder Elvis Presley, with 108.

Cynical types might observe that by sending all those cover versions to iTunes after each show airs, Glee has already released more “singles” than the Beatles did in their entire career. Also, it’s hard to compare the the many actor/singers who make up the Glee cast to a discrete band or solo artist like the Beatles or Elvis.

Still, numbers don’t lie, so let’s be happy for the Glee gang. What do you think of their latest chart accomplishment? Let us know in the comments.

Seattle man offers Weezer $10 million to break up; band says they'll do it for double

weezer-moneyImage Credit: Sean MurphyJames Burns so wants to see the permanent end of Weezer that he is willing to put $10 million (mostly other people’s, in $12 increments) on it.

The Seattle resident has mounted a pledge on DIY fundraising website thepoint.com, calling for the end of the band who, he tells local weekly The Stranger,”are everywhere 15 years after they’ve been musically relevant, whether you try to avoid them or not.”

“If I’m going to be really real,” he continues, “this is a roundabout effort to figure out why the media is still interested in this band despite them not releasing a decent album in over a decade (or I would say, ever.) … Even my girlfriend, the world’s biggest Weezer apologist, concedes that they should have packed it in after side one of The Green Album.

One Pitchfork re-post later, and Burns actually garnered a response from the band—drummer Patrick Wilson posted on his Twitter, “if they can make it 20, we’ll do the “deluxe breakup”!”

Burns has promised that if he fails to reach the full $10 million goal, he will refund all contributions, minus thepoint.com’s 5 percent fee; as of this post, he had raised approximately $194, or less than 0.002 percent of his total.
