Kenny Chesney tops the 'Billboard' 200 album sales chart

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

Kenny-ChesneyImage Credit: Melanie DuneaRaise a tumbler of Hemingway’s Whiskey (or another congratulatory beverage of your choice) to Kenny Chesney, whose album of that name just landed atop the new Billboard 200 album sales chart. It sold a healthy 183,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. This is Chesney’s sixth trip to No. 1; as Billboard notes, Garth Brooks is the only country star to top the album chart more often, with eight No. 1s. Cheers to Chesney!

Lil Wayne‘s I Am Not a Human Being made it to No. 2 with 110,000 copies sold. That’s a step down from the 176,000 his Rebirth debuted with earlier this year, and an even bigger one from the million-plus Tha Carter III managed for its 2008 bow — but bearing in mind that I Am Not a Human Being is a digital-only release thus far, this is actually a pretty great showing. The physical CD, scheduled to arrive next Tuesday, could boost sales further.

At No. 3, it’s last week’s chart-topper, the Zac Brown Band’s You Get What You Give, with 70,000 copies sold. Gucci Mane’s The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted comes in at No. 4 after moving 60,000 units — substantially less than the 90,000 his previous album bowed with, but a higher chart position since this is a quieter week. No. 6 goes to Eric Clapton, whose Clapton shifted 47,000 discs.

Those are the only notable debuts in the upper region of this week’s chart. What do you think of these results? Happy for Chesney? Any Lil Wayne fans who skipped the digital release but plan to buy the CD when it’s available? Sound off in the comments if you please.

Justin Bieber: Has he 'Punk'd' us with his entire career?

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Bieber-and-KutcherImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Glenn Harris/PR PhotosThe news that pop megastar Justin Bieber might host a rebooted version of MTV’s hoax show Punk’d did not surprise me one jot. I have long suspected his entire career to be an elaborate practical joke being played on America by Ashton Kutcher. How else, after all, to explain Mr Bieber’s unfeasible success? Or, for that matter, his hair?

Here’s my theory: On the first episode of the new Punk’d, Kutcher will reveal that “Bieber” is really a fictional character who, for the past two years has been “played” by Bruce Willis. The Kutch and Bruce are always talking about how well they get along, and we know the Die Hard star enjoys a good laugh. Hell, just this week he demonstrated his willingness to wear a meat wig in the name of comedy. Sporting a “Justin Bieber” toupee wouldn’t be that much more embarrassing.

Kutcher will then pay a visit to every person in the country and declare “You got Punk’d!” Oh, will we have egg on our faces!

Yep. never mind I’m Still Here. I’m saying Kutcher has pulled off the media stunt of the century. Do you agree?

Pink unveils new song for greatest-hits collection, 'Raise Your Glass'

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

pinkImage Credit: Marc Broussely/Redferns/Getty ImagesPink may be rowdy, but she’s punctual. The cockatiel-coiffed pop star’s official website promised fans a surprise at 6pm EST today, and at 6pm it was duly unveiled–a new track for her upcoming, modestly titled Greatest Hits … So Far!!, due November 16.

“Raise Your Glass,” a raucous NSFW ode to those who are “wrong in all the right ways,” toasts the “dirty little freaks” (with a glass full of … juice? kombucha?); stream it here.

The song already made news today when gossip sites reported a casting call for the upcoming video, which read, in part: ”REAL GAY COUPLE Lead Male or Female / 18 to 30 / All Ethnicities Seeking real gay couples. Pink is going to be marrying you!”

Taylor Swift releases 'Speak Now' single: Like it?

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Taylor Swift released the title song from her upcoming Oct. 25 album Speak Now earlier today. It promptly sped to the top of the iTunes Music Store chart, where it has remained all afternoon. There’s a good reason for that: This is one of her best tunes yet.

“Speak Now” is an expertly catchy pop composition whose twangy, up-and-down hooks might remind you of “You Belong With Me.” Like that hit, it’s a classic Swift story song. Our narrator is at a wedding that she feels compelled to interrupt because she inconveniently loves the groom. (Her very own “I’ma let you finish, but…” moment!) Swift fleshes out this sketch with sharply observed details: the bride’s “snotty little family all dressed in pastel,” a bridesmaid’s “gown shaped like a pastry,” a church organ playing “a song that sounds like a death march,” and so on. Her expressive delivery of the lyrics makes up for any shortcomings as a technical vocalist: Check out how her voice falls on the last two words of “You wish it was me, don’t you?” and rushes anxiously over “There’s a silence/There’s my last chance/I stand up with shaking hands,” both intentional choices that make the words feel more immediate.

I can’t stop replaying “Speak Now.” How about you? Which do you like better, this or “Mine”? Download “Speak Now” from iTunes, then let us know how you like it.

Kanye West announces new album title: 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Kanye-WestImage Credit: D Dipasupil/FilmMagic.comKanye West took to Twitter this morning to announce the name of his upcoming fifth studio album: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The title Dark Twisted Fantasy had been rumored for months, but now West has made it official with the addition of a personal pronoun and another descriptive adjective. (Allow us a brief interjection from the grammar police: Shouldn’t there be a comma or two in there somewhere?)

West has also said on Twitter that the album will arrive on Nov. 22, a Monday, though his label has yet to formally confirm a title or release date. Can’t wait that long? Look out for the final version of “All of the Lights,” a track that recently leaked in unfinished form and that West promised will be the next single from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. West added that the album will include some of the songs he’s given away for free in his “G.O.O.D. Fridays” series this summer and fall.

What do you think of the name My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy? Looking forward to hearing it? Let us know.

John Lennon's solo years: A major reissue campaign marks what would have been the Beatle's 70th birthday

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

John-LennonImage Credit: Globe PhotosJohn Lennon‘s 70th birthday this Oct. 9 ought to have been a chance to absorb whatever new sounds he was making as he entered old age. Since that is sadly impossible, why not honor his memory by listening again to the eight albums he recorded under his own name? A handsome if pricey new 11-CD box set presents all eight in freshly remastered form, plus another disc of slipshod demos and one more of non-album singles. (Also available is a separate new four-disc set that groups 72 songs thematically, as well as yet another one-disc hits compilation.) The reissues are also sold individually — or maybe you’d prefer to dig out the perfectly serviceable remasters that each album already received over the past 10 years. But however you choose to consume it, the time has never been better to rediscover the unpredictable, challenging music Lennon recorded in his 30s. READ FULL STORY »

Matador 21 in Las Vegas: three nights of all-star indie rock with a heavy dose of Gen-X nostalgia

PavementImage Credit: David Becker/WireImage.comWhen you think of live music in Las Vegas, you think of names like Manilow, Dion, and Newton, not Superchunk, Yo La Tengo, and Sonic Youth. But all that changed this past weekend when legendary indie-rock label Matador Records threw a huge three-night party at the Palms casino in celebration of its 21st anniversary. Since 1989, the label has had a hand in launching and nurturing along some of the leading lights of indie rock–including Pavement, Liz Phair, Guided by Voices, Belle & Sebastian, and The New Pornographers, all of whom were on hand to celebrate. The hipsters-meet-elderly-slot-jockeys setting certainly felt odd, but when you think about it, when you hit 21, where better to celebrate than Las Vegas, where 21 wins at Blackjack and you’re officially able to drink? Plus, around midnight on the last night, between sets by Yo La Tengo and Guided By Voices, I found myself seated at a Blackjack table next to Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel, and where else is that going to happen? Some other highlights after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
