Kanye West's busy news week: Diamond teeth, suicidal thoughts, multiple album covers, and much more

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

kanye-west-teethImage Credit: George Napolitano/FilmMagic.comIt’s only Wednesday, and already this week seems to be yielding more Kanye West news than the entire first quarter or two of 2010. Remember those long-ago months when West was in hiding from the media and details about his next album were a closely guarded secret? That era is so over. With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy‘s Nov. 22 release date coming up soon, he’s in full press cycle mode.

West started on Sunday night by claiming that his NSFW cover artwork for Fantasy had been “banned,” possibly indulging in a bit of hyperbole. Since then he’s been revealing tasty news bits left and right. Read on after the jump for your essential guide to The Week in Kanye. READ FULL STORY »

Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel perform at the baseball playoffs: Watch the videos

Zooey-Deschanel-Ben-GibbardImage Credit: Todd Williamson/WireImage.comIndie-schmindie power couple Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel were good sports this weekend—literally—bringing their insufferable adorability to game 3 of the National League Championship Series yesterday in San Francisco, Giants vs. Phillies.

Neither of them hails from the Bay Area, but perhaps they were splitting the difference? Death Cab for Cutie frontman Gibbard grew up in Bremerton, Washington, and Deschanel is a native Los Angeleno. Watch him sing the National Anthem in a jaunty blazer after the jump, and Zooey warble “God Bless America”: READ FULL STORY »

Taylor Swift takes on a bully (and John Mayer?) on new album

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

taylor-swiftImage Credit: John Shearer/WireImage.comAfter showing some remorse (and apologizing to Taylor Lautner?) on the track “Back to December,” the latest song from Taylor Swift’s upcoming album Speak Now to hit iTunes, “Mean,” has her once again the wronged party. As she explains in this video preview, “There’s constructive criticism, there’s professional criticism, and then there’s just being mean. And there’s a line that you cross when you just start to attack everything about a person… This happens no matter what you do, no matter how old you are, no matter what your job is, no matter what your place is in life, there’s always gonna be someone who’s just mean to you. And dealing with that is all that you can control, how you handle it. This song is about how I handle it.” The track’s bluegrass vibe (banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and harmonies) is a nice touch: It brings a sincerity to her pain and lets you focus on the words, which do, near the end, turn cheeky (proving she handles it with a sense of humor): “But all you are is mean/All you are is mean/And a liar, and pathetic, and alone in life/And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean.” The song also seems at least partly directed toward people who’ve questioned her singing ability. “And I can see you years from now in a bar/Talking over a football game/With that same big loud opinion but nobody’s listening/Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things/Drunk and grumbling on about how I can’t sing.” (Okay, that wasn’t exactly veiled.)

Another track, “Dear John,” which has yet to hit iTunes, is also making headlines. Writing for Our Country, the Y! Music Country Blog, EW contributor Chris Willman is confident that the track confirms her rumored relationship and breakup with John Mayer. He points to the first chorus: ”Dear John/I see it all now that you’re gone/Don’t you think I was too young/To be messed with/The girl in the dress/Cried the whole way home/I should’ve known.” And a second version of the chorus that includes the lines: “It was wrong/Don’t you think nineteen’s too young/To be played/By your dark, twisted games/When I loved you so.” He also notes these lyrics: “My mother accused me of losing my mind/But I swore I was fine…” and “You’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand/And I’ll look back in regret I ignored what they said/’Run as fast as you can’.” Just reading those, you understand why Willman claims we’ll be cheering when Swift sings, “I’m shining like fireworks over your sad, empty town.” It’s nice to see someone turn the tables on Mr. Overshare, isn’t it? Who else can’t wait to hear that track? (Willman says it’s six and a half minutes long.)

Rihanna tells EW about her high-tech new video, a possible duet with Katy Perry, and the most personal song on her new album

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

Remember that Rihanna video for “Who’s That Chick” with David Guetta that got leaked on the internet a few weeks ago? Well, now we know what it was all about. Turns out it’s a special project she’s doing with Doritos. If you buy a specially marked bag of the chips and head to DoritosLateNight.com, you and your smartphone can create an “augmented reality performance” with the “Who’s That Chick” clip. We quizzed the singer on what that means—and asked her to spill a little bit on her upcoming new record (Loud) and movie (Battleship).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I’ve read through the Doritos Late Night info several times and I still don’t think I fully understand it. So what’s the deal?
RIHANNA:
This is the first time my fans will be able to interact with me in one of my videos. We shot the video for “Who’s That Chick”  in two versions: day and night. With the Doritos bag you’ll be able to change back and forth between the two videos and it will be different every time.

The description of the project says that the experience “showcases the multiple facets of Rihanna’s personality and style.” So how would you describe those facets?
Hmmm. I would say fun, fearless, and hard.

The track is a lot of fun. But it does seem like there are a lot of songs out these days that are just about being in a club. Were you hesitant to do one now?
Yeah, I know. And that’s why it’s a bonus track and not on Loud. It’s a great song but it’s safe. It’s like a lot of other songs out there.

My favorite moment is when you say “Urrbody” instead of “Everybody.”
You’re funny. I think it was J-Kwon who came up with that first.

There’s a track with Nicki Minaj on Loud, right?
It’s called “Raining Men.” It’s about how if things don’t work out with one guy, there are always many more other guys out there.

What would you say is the most personal song on the record?
“Fading.” It’s about the end of a relationship and how you deal with it and move on.

Since it’s coming out next month, there’s no way you have the time to fit a duet with Katy Perry on there, right?
We’re actually in the studio talking about that right now. So you never know!

You’re in the middle of filming Battleship now too. So who’s the most bad-ass: you, Alexander Skarsgard, or Liam Neeson?
Me. Well, the most bad-ass in the whole movie is Taylor Kitsch. But I get to kick some ass too.

Willow Smith's 'Whip My Hair' video: Watch it here

Filed under: YouTube Delights and tagged: ,

willow-smithImage Credit: Solarpix/PR PhotosWhen did nine-year-olds get so very saucy? When I was nine, I had no sauce. Then again, my dad was neither fresh nor prince.

Will and Jada’s child empire continues to rise with the release of the video—leaked early today, then continually pulled until its official debut on 106 & Park tonight—for young Willow’s breakout single, “Whip My Hair.” And whip it she does, like Corey Glover minus the agit-rock politics and the scuba shortie suit.

I confess I was inclined at first to dismiss her quick rise as the worst kind of showbiz nepotism, and the pop stage as an entirely inappropriate and overly sexualized place for one so young. (Exception!) But this clip is about to put a boom in the chiropracting industry (with possible ancillary benefits for housepaint), because girl can snap it: READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber hints at a holiday release for potential acoustic album

justin-BieberImage Credit: Gerardo Mora/WireImage.comJustin Bieber hit it big after being discovered on Youtube playing his guitar. Now with millions of albums sold, it appears he’s planning to take it back to simpler times and release an acoustic album. On Saturday (Oct. 16), the teen sensation asked his fans what their favorites are from his first two albums through his Twitter page.

“curious…,” he started. “What is your favorite song on MY WORLD and MY WORLD 2.0?? If you could remix any song with another artist which would it be?” Then Justin shot his music director Dan Kanter a line suggesting they, “make an UNPLUGGED album for the fans for the holidays….or maybe we already did…hmmmm ;)

“maybe we need to give everybody an UNPLUGGED acoustic album with that new song I cut in Hawaii for the holidays…thoughts???” he continued. “..so an UNPLUGGED album for the HOLIDAYS????” That he’s playing a cruel joke on his almost six million followers is highly unlikely. Bieber’s rep declined to comment on the possibility of an acoustic album. But he apparently has a date for its release set. “On November 23rd the Unplugged Acoustic album comes out! Taking it back to how we started,” Bieber tweeted Oct. 23. “Spread the word.”

Is the Bieb’s acoustic album on your wish list? What songs do you hope make the cut? Let us know.

Kanye West: Walmart denies banning his racy cover artwork

Filed under: Let's Argue!, Music, News and tagged: , ,

kanye-westImage Credit: Jun Sato/WireImage.comWalmart had nothing to do with nixing Kanye West’s NSFW cover artwork for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, reps for the retail giant tell EW.

West referenced the chain in a snarky tweet last night, writing, “In all honesty … I really don’t be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers #Kanyeshrug!” A report in the Los Angeles Times cited concerns within West’s label about “whether or not mass-market retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart would carry an album featuring venomous nudes.” But Walmart is doing its best to stay out of this story.

“We’re excited about Kanye West’s new album and we look forward to carrying it in our stores on November 22nd,” a Walmart spokesperson says in a statement provided to EW. “As always, it’s our standard practice to carry the edited parental advisory version. We did not reject the cover artwork and it was never presented to us to view.”

Note especially that last part: Walmart never even saw the cover artwork, let alone “banning” it. So any internal Def Jam debate involving the store must have been a strictly hypothetical one.

Ingrid Michaelson's 'Parachute' video: An EW exclusive premiere

ingrid-michaelsonImage Credit: Shervin LainezIndie songstress and TV and film soundtrack mainstay Ingrid Michaelson released her most recent album, Everybody, last August. But one standalone track she co-penned, “Parachute,” took an unusual detour—becoming a European pop hit for former Brit girl-group star and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole earlier this year.

“It didn’t feel like something I could put out because it was so poppy, [so] we shipped it off for people to take a gander and see who would pick it up,” Michaelson says of the song, which eventually made its way to Cole’s camp.

It took producer Dan Romer, who worked with Michaelson on Everybody, to convince Michaelson to record “Parachute” herself: “He kind of jumped on the project, did this really interesting, funky production, and sent it to me. It was rad and cool and different. We put some new vocals on it, and I was like, ‘I love it!’
