Beastie Boys reveal updated 'Hot Sauce Committee' title, release plan

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Beastie-BoysImage Credit: Nathaniel HornblowerThe Beastie Boys are still working on the spicy project that was sidelined by Adam “MCA” Yauch’s cancer treatment last year.

The recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees revealed today that they plan to release an album titled Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 next spring, instead of Hot Sauce Committee Part 1, which was once expected this fall. It remains unclear whether there will be any tracklist overlap between Part 2 and the previously announced Part 1.

The Beasties’ cryptically worded statement in full: “Although we regret to inform you that Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will continue to be delayed indefinitely, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 will be released on time as originally planned in spring of 2011.”

Hot Sauce will be the Beasties’ first album since 2007′s instrumental The Mix-Up. Looking forward hearing it? Let us know in comments.

Kanye West posts 'banned' NSFW artwork for 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'

Filed under: Let's Argue!, Music, News and tagged: , ,

Kanye-WestImage Credit: Will Ragozzino/Getty ImagesKanye West has cooked up another controversy, this time over the cover art for his upcoming album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

“Yoooo they banned my album cover!!!!!” the rapper tweeted last night. He followed up with a link to the supposedly “banned” image, an NSFW painting with a bright red border in which a leering man clutches a green bottle in one hand while being straddled by a naked woman with white feathery wings, a polka-dotted tail, and menacingly sharp teeth. (See it after the jump.) “Banned in the USA!!!” West added via Twitter. “They don’t want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix… In the 70s album covers had actual nudity… It’s so funny that people forget that… Everything has been so commercialized now… So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings.”

One slight problem with West’s story: According to the Los Angeles Times, no one exactly “banned” the racy album cover. An anonymous Island Def Jam source tells the Times that while the label “strongly urged” West to ditch the image, he “was told if he wanted to do it, the label would stand behind him.” In other words, he’s almost certainly just trying to stir up some extra buzz for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy‘s expected Nov. 22 release. Can you blame him?

West’s reps have not responded to EW’s request for comment. Check out his “banned” album cover after the jump. What do you think? Are West’s critics making too big a deal about painted nudity, or is he the one wasting our time with a silly publicity stunt?

T.I. sentenced to 11 more months in prison

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

T-IImage Credit: Michael Loccisano/Getty ImagesA U.S. District Judge has sentenced T.I. to serve 11 more months in prison for violating his probation, reps for the rapper confirm.

T.I. and wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested in early September on suspicion of drug possession during a traffic stop. He was already on probation after serving a term behind bars for a 2008 weapons conviction.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, T.I. told the court that “I screwed up big time, and I’m sorry. I’m truly and sincerely sorry. I don’t want and I don’t need to use drugs anymore. I want them out of my life.” But U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pannell Jr. was not swayed, reportedly stating, “I think Mr. Harris had had about the limit of second chances.” T.I. was born Clifford Harris Jr.

A rep for Atlantic Records, T.I.’s label, released the following statement: “T.I. is such an important and valued member of our Atlantic family. We offer to him and his family our continued love and support during this very difficult time.”

Keith Richards claims Mick Jagger is 'unbearable' and has a 'tiny todger' in his autobiography

rolling-stonesImage Credit: Fabrice Coffrini/AFP/Getty ImagesKeith Richards describes his Rolling Stones band mate Mick Jagger as “unbearable” and also critiques the size of his manhood in the guitarist’s autobiography Life, which is published October 26. “It was the beginning of the Eighties when Mick started to become unbearable,” Richards writes in the book, according to the London Times. The guitarist also claims that Jagger’s onetime partner Marianne Faithfull, “had no fun with his tiny todger.” Richards adds, “I know he’s got an enormous pair of b—s – but it doesn’t quite fill the gap.”

Meanwhile, a more rounded depiction of the Jagger-Richards relationship is to be found in the excerpts from Life published in the current Rolling Stone. “I love the man dearly,” Richards writes at one point. “I’m still his mate. But he makes it very difficult to be his friend.”

In an interview with Richards which accompanies the Rolling Stone excerpts, the guitarist says that Jagger has read Life and was “a bit peeved about this and that.” But he also reveals that he and Jagger talked over the summer about the Stones returning to action in 2011.

EW will be reviewing Life at a later date.

Chairmen of the Board singer 'General' Norman Johnson dies at 67

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

General-Norman-JohnsonImage Credit: Gems/Redferns/Getty Images“General” Norman Johnson, lead singer of Detroit soul trio Chairmen of the Board, has passed away. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Virginia-born artist died Oct. 13 at age 67. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend and hero, General Johnson,” a message posted on the Chairmen’s official site reads. “He held a special place in his heart for each and every one of his family, friends, and fans. He will be surely missed, but his music will stand.”

The Chairmen were among the first acts signed to Holland/Dozier/Holland’s new Invictus label after the legendary songwriting team parted ways with Motown Records in the late 1960s. They scored a major hit with 1970′s “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” a classic of pleading, purring, trilling soul that remains in heavy rotation on many oldies stations today. While the group never again matched that song’s commercial performance, they continued to tour for decades with particular success in the South and were noted for their work in the Carolinas’ regional “beach music” scene.

Check out “Give Me Just a Little More Time” after the jump, and please join the Music Mix in sending sincere condolences to General Johnson’s family and friends. READ FULL STORY »

Ke$ha's raucous new single, 'We R Who We R': Listen here

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

KeShaYou hardly had a chance to miss her, did you? Though her platinum debut, Animal, has not yet celebrated its first birthday, the First Lady of whiskey toothpaste and  Glad-bag couture announced its companion followup, Cannibal, earlier this week. Less than 48 hours later, the album’s first single has landed online.

She is, you may be shocked to learn, still a connoisseur of glitter and good times. “We R Who We R” follows previous party-to-the-people anthems built on the talk-singer’s extra-enunciated consonants and chanty non-sequiturs (“and no you don’t wanna mess with us / got Jesus on my neck-uh-lace”).

As she told EW yesterday, the song’s inspiration was fueled by the recent spate of gay-related teen suicides, ”a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities” meant to “inspire people to be themselves.” (And a companion piece, perhaps, to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” released last week?).

Taylor-SwiftImage Credit: Christie GoodwinNearly everyone agrees that Taylor Swift‘s third album, Speak Now, is destined to be a hit. The only question is how big. Some people are openly raising the possibility that Speak Now could sell as many as one million copies in its first week — a feat no one has accomplished since Lil Wayne in 2008. Could she really pull this off? The Music Mix found out what a few retail experts have to say. READ FULL STORY »

T.I. apologizes to public on eve of probation hearing: 'I'm tired'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

TIImage Credit: Jamie McCarthy/Getty ImagesT.I. will face a federal judge in Atlanta this afternoon who could send him back to prison for allegedly violating his probation terms. With that moment of reckoning getting closer, the rapper sat down with CNN’s Don Lemon for a candid interview.

“I’m tired. I’m wore out,” T.I. told Lemon. “I don’t have the age, the energy or just the attitude to move forward and continuing in this cycle in this ongoing process of destruction and disparity in my life. I’ve got too many depending on me and counting on me. I can’t do it.”

He offered a heartfelt apology to those he has disappointed: “The only thing that I can say, man, is that all people who have supported me, who were behind me, who believed in me, who were disappointed and were let down, I just offered my sincerest apologies, and I will dedicate my life no matter how long it takes to earn your trust back and to make you proud yet again.”

T.I. also spoke on how he helped convince a man not to take his own life earlier this week: “I believe that I have been put here for a purpose, and I believe that I have an ability to reach people that most people can’t reach, that I can turn lives around that other people, they can’t have the same effect.”

T.I. and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, were arrested in September on alleged drug charges. He was already on probation for a 2008 weapons conviction. T.I.’s hearing in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia is scheduled for 2 P.M. today. Check back at the Music Mix for updates on his case.

What do you think of T.I.’s apology? Do you think the judge will send him back to jail this afternoon? Speak up in the comments.
