Lady Gaga buys back auction items

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

lady-gagaImage Credit: Fred Dufour/AFP/Getty ImagesLady Gaga‘s past is no longer for sale. MTV News reports that the star has intervened to buy back several items that a former manager had put up for auction through Gotta Have It! Collectibles.

The items included several rare demo CDs dating from 2002, 2005, and 2006, back when Gaga was still known as Stefani Germanotta. At least one of the discs contained early Gaga tunes that have never been heard by the public. The amount paid by Gaga’s management for the lots has not been disclosed.

These are not the first items to be pulled from the “Gotta Have Rock and Roll” auction. Last week, the FBI seized John Lennon’s 1976 application for U.S. residence before it could be sold.

Disappointed that you won’t have a chance to bid on Lady Gaga’s old demos? Let us know what you think of this story.

Katy Perry, Sugarland, Nicki Minaj announced for special 'Vh1 Divas' tribute to the military

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

vh1-divasVh1′s long-running annual Divas event will take a new tack in its thirteenth year: honoring the military, rather than themselves, through spangled lady-song.

Featured performers Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Sugarland, and Keri Hilson are scheduled to tape the event before troops at San Diego’s Marine Corps Air Station Miramar while Paramore satellite in from a military base in the Middle East.

For two participants it’s a family cause: Hilson’s father served in the Army, and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles’ brother is currently in the Air Force.

Nettles had already made a joking threat to don a historic talisman of diva/military relations for the show: She told press that she’s “hoping to wear” Cher’s butt-floss body stocking in 1989′s battleship-set video for “If I Could Turn Back Time,” which the now-64-year-old Divas alum famously revisited last month at the VMAs.

Vh1 Divas Salute the Troops premieres December 5 and will also be broadcast internationally on the Armed Forces Network.

Actor/director Adam Goldberg's new musical project: Hear new single 'Don't Grow' exclusively here

adam-goldbergHound dog-eyed Actor Adam Goldberg (Entourage, Dazed and Confused, The Hebrew Hammer) dipped a thespian toe into music-making under the name LANDy with last year’s woozy art-pop effort Eros & Omissions, featuring friends Steve Drozd of the Flaming Lips and Earlimart’s Aaron Espinoza.

After discovering that LANDy’s Google real estate was already occupied by, as as Goldberg notes,”Taiwanese pop sensation Landy Wen, Mexican troubadour Landy, Landy Insurance Company, Landy Cognac, a song about Landy cognac by Snoop Dog, and MySpace rapper Landy who you might know from the holiday favorite, ‘I Wanna F—,” that moniker has been been replaced with the newly-christened Goldberg Sisters.

Watch the “girls” explain themselves in Goldberg’s super-indie ultra mega quirky EPK here, and stream “Don’t Grow,” from the eponymous album due February 8, below:

Taylor Swift, vinyl lover: She tells EW why she's releasing 'Speak Now' as an LP

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

taylor-swiftImage Credit: Joseph Anthony BakerTaylor Swift has emerged as one of the biggest pop stars of the MP3 age, but deep down, the 20-year-old singer is an old-fashioned vinyl collector. Swift personally made sure that her third album, Speak Now, would be available as a vinyl record as well as a CD and a digital download. The double LP will arrive Nov. 16, a few weeks after the album’s Oct. 25 release date in other formats. “The vinyl is really important to me,” Swift tells EW, “because I’m so in love with the concept of an album — a collection of memories from your life that you’re giving to people. It’s a piece of you. Buying them on vinyl is just taking that one step further and acknowledging that albums are important.”

Swift’s love for vinyl is no joke. She says she has a record player in a “central, prominent location” in her kitchen at home, and she brought a turntable with her on tour so she could rock out on the road. At a recent trip with EW to Nashville’s Great Escape Music Store, she snapped up LPs by Bruce Springsteen (Working on a Dream, Magic), Ryan Adams (Easy Tiger), the Black Keys (Rubber Factory), and more. (Check out the latest issue of EW, on stands tomorrow, to read the full story of Swift’s record-buying expedition.)

Big, beautiful cover art is one reason why Swift loves vinyl. “There’s something so fascinating about the cover art — every single one of those was a decision by somebody and people put a lot of time and effort into it,” she says. “With my albums, I have a lot of fun with the art direction and a lot of what I do is trying to visually express what the song says. You take the lyrics and you see what picture it paints and you try to do a photo set up that looks like it… We’re incorporating the same art in the vinyl album as we do in the CD, but it’s done in a different format. It’s really put forth in its own way.”

Shortly after that record-buying spree, EW was with Swift when she tore off the brown paper covering and sees Speak Now‘s vinyl edition for the first time. “It’s like Christmas,” she says. “Oh my God, whoa! This is so crazy. It feels unreal. I’m so happy about this.” —Reporting by Eileen Finan

Bruno Mars leads Billboard's Hot 100 chart for fourth straight week

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Bruno Mars won’t be budging from the Billboard Hot 100 chart’s throne this week. His “Just the Way You Are” sits at No. 1 for a fourth straight week. Far East Movement’s “Like A G6″ remains at No. 2, while the No. 3, Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” seems to be creeping up to No. 1. It exchanges spots with Katy Perry‘s “Teenage Dream,” pushing it to No. 4.”DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” by Usher keeps its spot at No. 5.

Rihanna‘s “Only Girl (In The World)” skips up to No. 6. Dropping a spot is to No. 7 is Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” Making a huge debut on the top 10 is Taylor Swift, whose “Speak Now” opens at No. 8. It’s the title track from her upcoming album. Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me” moves up a rung to No. 9, and Eminem‘s “Love the Way You Lie” falls three spots to No. 10.

Are you at all surprised at what this week’s numbers revealed? Let us know.

lil-wayneImage Credit: Ray Tamarra/Getty ImagesLil Wayne was recently moved to solitary confinement in Rikers Island after being caught with MP3-playing paraphernalia, but that won’t stop him from communicating with fans. The rap superstar just posted his ninth letter to the public at his website WeezyThanxYou.com.

“I admit, I f—ed up and now I must deal with the consequences,” he writes. “As I write this, I only have 25 days left, and it’ll be even less than that when you read this. So honestly, I’m fine.”

Lil Wayne is scheduled to be released on Nov. 4. His latest message reiterates plans to release his new album I Am Not a Human Being in stores when he gets out. Check out the whole letter, then let us know what you think.

Ke$ha talks to EW about upcoming album 'Cannibal': 'It's fun as s--!'

keshaImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesTrash-loving pop star Ke$ha announced yesterday that, a mere 10 months after the release of her debut album Animal, she’ll drop a second album titled Cannibal on Nov. 22. She spoke to EW exclusively about the new recordings, which she’s been working on for the past two weeks. “I don’t want to go away!” she said of her decision to return to the studio so quickly. “I feel like I’m creating this hopefully very youthful and irreverent movement of the kids, of like adolescence. I feel like the parents don’t get it, but the kids get it. And they deserve to have more good, positive music.”

That “good, positive music” launches with anthemic new single “We R Who We R,” which will go out to radio stations across the country today. Ke$ha penned the topical tune in the wake of the news about bullying that has led to multiple suicides of gay youth lately. She hopes that the song, in particular, will be a pride anthem. “I wanted to inspire people,” she says, “to be themselves. It’s a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities.” Of the album as a whole, she adds: “It’s fun as s—! So I wanted to give [my fans] that.” Cannibal will feature nine tracks, including a remix of “Animal,” the title song from her first album. In addition to being sold individually, the album will be repackaged into a special deluxe edition with her first record to be called Animal + Cannibal. Look for more from Ke$ha about recording Cannibal in the issue of Entertainment Weekly that hits stands Oct. 29.

Justin Bieber tells Patriot Tom Brady to get a haircut in new rap freestyle: Watch here

brady-bieberImage Credit: Winslow Townson/AP Images; Pamela LittkeyThis kid just does it all, huh? Justin Bieber is known for eliciting squeals from tweens by way of singing and dancing. But last night the Biebs made his debut as a rapper. Over Cam’Ron and Vado’s “Speaking in Tungs,” a huge hip-hop record in New York’s tri-state area, Bieber confidently steps to the mic in a short Youtube clip. Honestly, he’s pretty good. Lyrically it’s pretty light on substance. But that’s okay. He’s only 16! And rich. He rhymes about buying a girl diamonds, being on fire, and being fly. But there is one line that’s a cut above the rest, where he takes a shot at New England Patriot Tom Brady – who’s been getting a lot of heat for sporting Bieber’s hairstyle. Apparently there can only be one mop cut king.

“Call up Mr. Brady,” Bieber spits as he gets into quarterback stance. “Tell him leave his hair to the guy who sings ‘Baby‘.” It’s all in good fun, of course. Don’t expect a rap album from Bieber any time soon. “I just wanted to do this just to prove that I have skills on the rap game,” he says when the track winds down. Mission accomplished. Check out the clip after the jump and let us know what you think of it. Is it time for Brady to meet a pair of scissors now?

Rihanna's 'Only Girl (In the World)' video: Finally, fun RiRi returns!

rihanna-only-girl-worldRihanna has made it through the rain. Or, at least that’s what her flouncy, candy-colored video for her latest, delicious and dancey single Only Girl (In The World) seems to suggest. After a year of dropping dark videos for heavy songs like “Hard” and “Russian Roulette”—clips so brutal they could have made a Kremlin guard rethink his steely gaze—RiRi seems downright elated and happy to be living life in Only Girl. There is little storyline for the video, but it near-perfectly mimics the care-free lyrics to the song, which suggest that, for one person, she is the “only girl in the world.” In fact, there’s not a backup dancer in sight! Not one other living soul appears in the clip, making it as if Rihanna is speaking directly to you, the viewer, and she is your one and only amid swallowing rolling, beautiful, swallowing landscapes. It’s an effect that makes you focus squarely on RiRi, who’s ensconsced in flirty outfits and sporting that fire-red ‘do she wore to the VMAs last month.

Rihanna recently spoke to JustJared.com about the video and explained the concept a bit more. “It’s really, really beautifully shot in these crazy, crazy, crazy places,” the 22-year-old said. “We shot landscapes that we found a couple hours outside of L.A. It looks so unreal. It looks fake, like something out of a postcard with the beautiful hills… We had a lot of sunshine those couple of days, so it really worked with the whole essence of the video. But really, the video just shows this big landscape and the only person there is me.”

The single comes from her upcoming studio album LOUD!, which hit stores worldwide on November 12. Until then embrace the beauty of Only Girl (In the World) here:
