Taylor Swift apologizes (to Taylor Lautner?) in 'Back to December'

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

Taylor-SwiftImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com“Back to December,” another new song from Taylor Swift’s upcoming album Speak Now, has hit iTunes, and it’s making headlines because, for the first time, she’s the one who needs to apologize for her behavior in a relationship. Swift, known for her autobiographical songwriting, has already admitted it’s “almost word-for-word” a conversation that she had with a young man whose heart she broke. She wouldn’t name him, but fans are assuming it’s Twilight‘s Taylor Lautner. In the tune — a melancholy mea culpa with the kind of driving chorus and age-appropriate yet universal honesty that makes Swift’s songs hits – she says she’s sorry for the last time he saw her (“You gave me roses, and I left them there to die”) and that she wishes she realized what she had (“I’d go back to December, turn around, and change my own mind/I go back to December all the time”). At the risk of going Teen Beat on you, here’s why the Lautner guess isn’t a bad one: READ FULL STORY »

Adam Lambert to make 'minor adjustments' to concert after Malaysian group says he promotes 'gay culture'

Filed under: Music and tagged:

Adam-LambertImage Credit: Taylor Hill/WireImage.comHow did celebrities ever respond to controversy before Twitter? The latest celeb to tackle a big issue on the micro-blogging site is Adam Lambert, who tweeted a response this afternoon to complaints made by a Malaysian opposition group leading up to his scheduled Thursday night performance.

The Pan Malaysian Islamic Party recently called for the cancellation of Lambert’s concert in the country, saying he and his show promoted “gay culture,” according to reports. Lambert responded today, tweeting: “While I don’t believe that my glamnation tour is in any way offensive I have agreed to make a few minor adjustments out of respect for the Malaysian government.”

He followed up his (rather mild) response with:

Does my show ‘promote the gay lifestyle’? It promotes living ANY lifestyle that includes the freedom to seek love and intimacy. Gay, straight, bi, young or old. It’s all inclusive….Plus, what’s THE gay lifestyle? There isn’t just one. There are so many different kinds of gay people. We have a variety of different lifestyles. There’s not only one lifestyle lived by straight folks. Generalizing….

Lambert is no stranger to criticism here in the States, either. Last year, his racy performance on the American Music Awards — in which he simulated a sex act on stage — resulted in backlash from the FCC and the network. (He later kind of apologized for the incident.)

Keeping in mind Lambert’s tendency to push the envelope, do you think he can hold himself back enough to please the group opposing his concert? Should he have to? Sound off, Mixers!

Solomon Burke: An appreciation of the late 'King of Rock and Soul'

Solomon-BurkeImage Credit: Gilles Petard/Redferns/Getty Images; Trish Tokar/Getty ImagesSolomon Burke—who died in the Netherlands on October 10 from natural causes, aged 70—was once hailed as the best soul singer of all-time by producer Jerry Wexler. Obviously, that assessment is open to debate, although it’s not one I would have cared to argue about with the legendary Wexler. Certainly, Burke deserved his status as one of the bona fide greats thanks to his richly soulful performances on the likes of “Cry to Me,” “Tonight’s the Night,” and, of course, “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.”

Wexler might also have nominated Burke as soul’s most colorful singer. Who else can claim that, during an early lull in their career, they took a job in a mortuary? And who else brought sandwiches on tour so he could make some money on the side selling them to hungry musicians? It was also not unknown for the so-called “King of Rock and Soul” to appear on stage wearing a cape and jewel-encrusted crown.

'Glee' Exclusive: Elton John to work with Matthew Morrison on actor's debut album

elton-john-Matthew-MorrisonImage Credit: Solarpix/PR Photos; Adam Rose/Fox Elton John recently revealed to EW exclusively that he’ll be working with Glee star Matthew Morrison—aka Will Schuester—on the actor’s forthcoming debut album. “I’m supposed to be doing something with Matthew Morrison for his album,” John told EW, when he called to talk about The Union, John’s album collaboration with legendary pianist-songwriter Leon Russell, which hits stores Oct. 19. “[Matthew and I] had a little meeting together, so hopefully that’s going to happen when I get to L.A.” John says the collaboration with the Glee star will likely happen sometime this month. John also recently fanned rumors that he may contribute to Lady Gaga’s upcoming album, Born This Way. “There’s a chance I might do one track with her,” he told EW, “but she’s so busy, and I’m so busy, we can never get together!”

Considering his upcoming collaboration with Morrison, though, could an all-Elton episode of Glee—or even an appearance on the show—be that far off? It’s not in the works…yet. “I love Glee, but no, no, no,” the legendary singer said. “Of course, I’d be into that. It’s always great when someone covers your songs, no matter how good or bad the version is. You know, I started out as a songwriter, so I always get a kick out of that.”

Gorillaz run wild at NYC's Madison Square Garden with help from Lou Reed, Mos Def, and many more

GORILLAZ-DamonImage Credit: Taylor Hill/FilmMagic.comLou Reed might have been the only person in all of Madison Square Garden who did not crack a smile at the Gorillaz concert last night. As a legendarily curmudgeonly rock deity, Lou’s got a reputation to uphold. Scowling is his thing. But virtually everyone else in the arena, especially Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, burst out in un-self-conscious glee when Reed showed up for a mid-set cameo. The guest of honor ripped through a harsh, metallic guitar solo; recited the lyrics to “Some Kind of Nature” off a sheet; unleashed some more screeching White Light/White Heat-style feedback at the end of the song; and raised his arms in a curt victory sign. It was spellbinding. Albarn wrapped him a slightly awkward hug before he moseyed off stage. READ FULL STORY »

John Lennon's 70th birthday: How will you mark the day?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

On this day 70 years ago, Oct. 9, 1940, John Lennon was born in Liverpool. It’s undeniably tragic that he is not around to celebrate his birthday today. But this can also be a happy occasion for fans, a time to reflect on all the joy that this great artist brought into the world before his senseless murder in 1980.

The 70th anniversary of Lennon’s birth is being marked around the globe in all kinds of ways. EMI rolled out a major reissue campaign of his solo catalog earlier this week — read all about it here. Last fall’s complete Beatles remasters still sound amazing as well. If you’re not up for buying any of those CDs, iTunes is offering a free download of “(Just Like) Starting Over” from the new Double Fantasy Stripped Down. This fresh version of one of his best-loved tunes, without some of the studio dressing from the original 1980 release, is well worth adding to your iPod.

There’s plenty of Lennon love elsewhere on the Web, too. Google‘s homepage has been decorated since yesterday with a cute animation based on Lennon’s drawings. Over at YouTube, you can check out video tributes to Lennon from his widow Yoko Ono, his old bandmate Ringo Starr, and fans from Brian Wilson to Jeff Bridges to the Jonas Brothers. You can also submit your own clip paying homage to Lennon if you like.

If you live in New York City, consider heading to Central Park’s SummerStage Theater tonight for a special free screening of a new documentary about Lennon’s years in the city, LENNONYC. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. screening. (If you’re not based in NYC or you can’t make it, don’t worry — PBS will air the film Nov. 22.)

Those are just a few of the many options available for honoring Lennon today. Will you be celebrating his 70th birthday? Let us know how in the comments.

Taylor Swift's ex-manager is suing for millions

Taylor-SwiftImage Credit: Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty ImagesTaylor Swift’s former manager Dan Dymtrow is suing for millions he claims to be owed in commissions for helping launch the career of the country star. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the legal wrangling dates back to 2007 when Dymtrow initially sued Taylor Swift and her parents, claiming they breached a management contract by paying him only $10,000. Dymtrow, who has also represented Britney Spears, signed Swift in April 2004, but stopped overseeing her career in July 2005, the year before she broke big with her single “Tim McGraw.”

Dymtrow claims that he should have been paid a commission for his work. The Swift camp argues that Dymtrow failed to obtain the required court approval of his management contract with Taylor, which was necessary because she was a minor.

Linkin Park shoots for the stars in 'Waiting for the End' video: Watch here

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

This morning Linkin Park debuted the video for their their latest single, “Waiting for the End.” Almost like peering through a telescope at the stars, the band appears in the clip as starry, living constellations. Each member’s stars light up and twitch as they perform the reflective rock cut. Deers, rabbits, and dinosaur heads morph into each other throughout as well. It’s an abstract video. All I can gather of it is that their within a machine of some sort. But hey, your guess is as good as mine.

What do you make of the “Waiting for the End” video? The song doesn’t really scream, “Rage against the machine!” Are they dying slowly inside it? Let us (me) know. Watch the video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
