Rihanna feat. Eminem, 'Love the Way You Lie (Pt II)': Hear the sequel to their smash duet

rihanna-eminemImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage.comEven while the original still lingers at no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100—where it spent a chart-busting seven weeks in the top spot this summer—Rihanna and Eminem have released a sequel to their combative-love ballad “Love the Way You Lie,” this time flipping the “featuring” credit to make the pop star its main player, and the rapper her guest.

Aside from several new Rihanna-led verses and more atmospheric, Ryan Tedder-esque synths in place of the first song’s harder instrumental charge, the melody and main hook on “Love the Way You Lie (Pt. II),” which will appear on her upcoming album Loud, is essentially unchanged; stream it here:

Still, listeners looking for insight into the two stars’ famously turbulent personal lives will find more fodder here from both. Rihanna’s new verses, including “On the first page of our story / The future seemed so bright / then this thing turned out so evil / I don’t know why I’m still surprised” and “So maybe I’m a masochist/ I want to run but I don’t ever leave,” continue to conjure thoughts of her relationship with Chris Brown, and Eminem brings his own considerable history to lines like “Try and touch me so I scream at you not to touch me/ Run out the room and I’ll follow you like a lost puppy/ Baby without you I’m nothing/ I’m so lost/ Hug me and then tell me how ugly I am/ But that you’ll always love me” spins the first song’s story of domestic violence further forward. Stream it here:

Rihanna actually told MTV News recently that she initially thought a sequel shouldn’t be done at all: “When I first heard the idea about doing a part two,” she said last week, “I was just completely against it. I just felt like you couldn’t beat the original. There’s no way you can outdo that, so why compete with it?”

Later, she changed her mind: “We heard a broken-down version that was stripped down, just piano … that’s going to be a bonus on iTunes,” she said. “I fell in love with it. We recorded it, then we did another version to the stripped-down version with drums, then we did another version with drums and Eminem. And then that was the one that just felt really good.”

Wow, this is amazing. I love when artists take on the challenge of allowing something really personal to pour from them for the sake of their art. It can be difficult but when done well it is absolutely beautiful.

    • Sara

she still can’t sing, but this is not bad.

  • Caroline

This song is just as good as the first part. I love it!

  • rey

this is just like empire state of mind. there is one by jay-z featuring alicia keys. then there is one with alicia keys featuring jay-z.

    • graeme

This isn’t quite as good as Key’s ESOM Part II, but it’s still pretty great. Could have done without Eminem on this though.

      • graeme

And Jay-Z isn’t on Keys’ Part II

  • Michael

    Love it!!!

All this shows me is that Rhianna is nothing without Protools/Autotune. I love Em’s verse, the lyrics are powerful, but hearing her attempt to sing Pt. 2 sounds as fake as her Ronald McDonald wig.
Wouldn’t it have made more sense to credit THIS as Em’s track considering the drums and let Rhianna have credit for Pt. 1? Just another marketing ploy to get young kids to buy this crap from iTunes – you can tell it is just a half-assed attempt to capitalize on Pt. 1. Would have been more impressed if they were recorded simultaneously, shows more creativity IMO

your opinion doesn’t matter, so STFU

      • ImStillToni

HAHAHAHAHA oh Jasper “Hug me and then tell me how ugly I am/But that you’ll always love me”

    • john t.

agreed. eminem, again, carries the song.

the song itself feels dragged. if they sped it up just a bit, but enough to still keep it a ballad, it would work for me.

It is ridiculous for you to say that Rihanna is nothing without Autotune…have you heard her perform live and in person?!? If not, then you have no idea what you are talking about. She is an incredible singer and will blow you away with her pure voice. This is just a song used with other technology.

      • u

        Then you must be hearing-impaired.

      • True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue

I’ve heard her perform live more times than I should have allowed myself to… she can’t sing, PERIOD. Her vocals are weak, she can never hit all the notes that she does in the studio version of her songs, her voice cracks VERY often, and on top of that she sounds more like a goat than she does a human being. She has an extremely limited range. Her voice is “incredible” alright, as in incredibly BAD.

      • Miss Talk

Breezy, stop defending her and tell us what really happened in the Lambo.

      • D2

Ok idiots. We mean have you actually been to one of her concerts? She.is.mindblowing. Her vocals are great, seriously in the recent months her vocal performances have been great

  • Preston

This will be even hotter when it appears on her album. She made smart timing to have a hit with Eminem months before her fifth album came out. I’d really like to hear her revenge track to Eminem’s biting and hurtful lyrics to his ex on the earlier song.

    • Wait..What?

Please this is yet another attempt to exploit the fact that she started a fight, lost the fight and the lesbian man hating feminists have dubbed her victim. She pulled the same stunt last year with that fake 20/20 interview. This year she is using wife beater Eminem as her new media prop! Don’t think ppl are going to buy this go around but hey some ppl are just slow!

  • CESAR

EMINEM IS SO EMOTIONAL…R.I.P LOVE THE WAY PART 1…..

  • ejk

brilliant was worried at first cos i heard therd b less eminem but happily suprised

  • anya

I really like this, I think they both do really good. Like it almost as much as the original. With a couple more listens I might like it better then the original.

  • lem

This is so emotinal from eminem, best rapper SAY NO MORE. No.1 hottest mc kills em alll go em !

  • ERIC DUNCAN

SHOULD HAVE PUT EMINEM IN AT THE START OF THE SONG.

  • G

It’s okay I still perfer the original.

  • Wait..What?

@Leah Greenblatt, Why does this song not remind you of SERIAL WIFE BEATER Eminem’s LONG HISTORY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE with is ex-wife Kim Mathers? Why mention a one time fight between a 20 yr old and a TEENAGER boyfriend but fail to speak on the ADULT MALE who married and CONSTANTLY BEAT ON HIS WIFE?

  • Wait..What?

ALSO @ Leah Greenblatt, if you are going to quote words why don’t you pay attention to Rihanna’s confessions! But through it all…she still sees him as her “HERO”!… the “battles are what SATISFIED her”. When is someone in the media going to focus on the truth about Rihanna’s abusive past instead of trying to always decalre her as a victim. This song is complete crap but will be #1 because is has WIFE BEATER Eminem on it! Of course his wife beating is just “PEACHY KEEN”!

  • lexo

When will people realize that she is going to milk the situation as along she can. The situation is old, and Chris is trying to move on from this mess. She keeps trying to push him down over and over again. I just dont get it at all. I mean there is nothin wrong with her making a song about him, but she needs to make a song that will not make her look like a “Victim”. Although the song is good, I still think that she should stop it already. She should go to meetings herself and speak to women who have been a victim of abuse and give them the secret on how she moved on ever so fast and is already in love again after being so “badly” beaten.. smh
