Taylor Swift’s Speak Now has come through with a huge debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week. Selling 1,047,000 copies in seven days, she’s the first artist to sell a million that fast since Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III in 2008. Last week’s chart-topper, Sugarland’s The Incredible Machine, drops to second place with 89,000. Kings of Leon’s Come Around Sundown drops a rung to No. 3 with 67,000 units moved. Lil Wayne’s I Am Not a Human Being jumps up one spot to No. 4, selling 43,000 copies. Eminem’s Recovery moves up three places to No. 5, selling 38,000 copies.
Elton John and Leon Russell’s collab album The Union slips three places to No. 6 with 37,000 records sold. The Glee: Rocky Horror Glee Show soundtrack steps back one to No. 7 with 31,000 copies sold. Rod Stewart’s Fly Me to the Moon falls four places to No. 8 with 30,000 albums bought. Darius Rucker’s Charleston, SC 1966 climbs up one to No. 9 and sold 27,000 copies. Michael Buble’s Hollywood EP is the second-highest debut on the chart at No. 10, selling 26,000 copies and rounding out the top 10.
That’s this week’s top 10, folks. Are you surprised with Taylor’s success? Did you buy her album or anyone else’s? Let us know.

She deserves her success. She has a huge loyal fan base and she got that by being good to her fans. She comes off almost like an anti-celebrity in some ways. Other then her penchant for sparkly dresses she is not austintatious. She has a very down to earth vibe and I think that is what contributes to her success. Her fans don’t feel like they are below her. They feel like her friends.
I totally agree this album is the best one for 10 years its brilliant. Brilliantly written and sung by this lovely songbird!! Well Done Taylor!!!
taylor is amazing. she truly deserves all the success she’s had and will continue to have.
I’m not a fan, but I am not surprised. Her fanbase grew alot after opening with over 500,000 for Fearless. She was on the charts for a long time so I was expecting the fans she gained to help her reach the million in the first week. I doubt she will match the total sales for Fearless. However, this is a huge accomplishment for her especially in this day and age when you can just get it for free. It doesn’t hurt when your fan demographic is less likely to illegally download. I’m one of those people who always criticize her live singing but I’m kinda happy for her.
she can’t sing worth a damn
so she must have f–ked her way up
1,000,000+ music buyers thinks she’s doing better than you.
I don’t even like her music and I find your comment sickening.
And, if such were the case, the only thing her success tells me is that she is a MUCH BETTER lay than you.
+1 because I agree with the first part, and +5 for making me laugh with the second.
Taylor is amazing…her songs are from the heart…
Ummm… does this include sales from the Monday release?
Yes she`s an alright songwriter and I mean alright. But she is not a good vocalist. There are many other powerhouse singers who don`t get nowhere near the type of recognition the she gets. Why don`t talented and gifted singers don`t sell a million copies in a week. And yes most of them are black females. It`s been like this forever. PEOPLE PLEASE SUPPORT TRUE TALENT! There are some singers out today that absolutely don`t deserve record deals!
Dee, I’m mixed about your comment. On the one hand, the entire history of Modern Popular Music (starting with Jazz and proceeding through Rock and R&B) is littered with examples of black artists who have been ignored, even as their original music was ripped off by white artists making a ton of money releasing terrible “white-washed” versions of far more powerful originals. This trend largely ceased with the success of Rap (Eminem notwithstanding).
Where I diverge from you is your concept that “powerhouse” singing is so all-important. Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley — vital artists, but not great vocalists. In my book, the greatest black vocalist EVER was Billie Holiday. Billie hardly had “powerhouse” pipes, but she could MOVE people — get under their skin, touch their hearts and souls — like no one else.
No one would compare Swift’s background and experiences to Holiday’s, but Taylor’s fans love her singing because of its EXPRESSIVENESS, not it’s perfection.
It’s okay that she’s not to your tastes. But you shouldn’t attack someone just because they’re different from you.
Usually I slam her because I don’t buy her sweetness but I would rather have her whin…huh, singing about her ex-boyfriends than cutting her wrists.
Taylor’s success is b/c people relate to her music & enjoy her sound. As someone in my 30s, I still relate to her song “Tim McGraw” from her first CD. Glad for Taylor & look forward to hearing all of her new disk
well ok i’m sorry about what i wrote about this …whore
Alicia Keys has sold 30 million albums. Taylor Swift has sold 10 million. Yeah, people only buy white girls’ albums. Good point, Dee.
I bought Taylor’s album and I think it’s really good. The more I listen to it the more I like it. I haven’t always been a big fan of her in the past, but I was intrigued about this album so I decided to get it and I’m glad that I did.
