Smashing Pumpkins frontman and general unstoppable quote machine Billy Corgan took to his official twitter.com/billy# page over the weekend, unleashing a series of persnickety butterfly-winged tweet bullets after receiving the news that he would be sharing a festival bill with the recently reunited Pavement at Brazil’s Planeta Terra Festival next week.
Below, his thoughts, presented in unexpurgated real-time form:
1:50 PM Just found out SP is playing with Pavement in Brazil. It’s gonna be 1 of those New Orleans type funerals
1:51 PM I say that because they represent the death of the alternative dream, and we follow with the affirmation of life part.
1:53 PM funny how those who pointed the big finger of ‘sell out’ are the biggest offenders now…yawn. they have no love
2:00 PM by the way, we’ll be the band up there playing NEW songs because we have the love xx
It’s so Mothra vs. Godzilla, if Mothra’s band had no other original members, and Godzilla kind of never cared about Mothra in the first place! Or as my colleague Simon says, “It’s like Billy just finally got around to hearing the third verse of ‘Range Life” … again.
But what do you think, readers—should this (generally one-sided) feud continue, or should they meet up backstage in Sao Paulo, have a pitcher of caipirinhas, do some capoeira, and finally call it a truce?

Pavement at Central Park: Oh, stormy night

Get over it Corgan! Pavement was always a better band and will always be no matter how many new songs SP comes out with.
Or rather what Billy refers to as “the Smashing Pumpkins,” and not “the Billy Corgan Happy Hour”.
Smashing Pumpkins are about as “alternative” as Target. Pavement had about 13 fans who bought their records. I would say that makes them the rarity, not the multi-millionaire rockstar/whiner. I guess the irony is that people are far more excited now to see Pavement then they are to see the same old same old from Moby Corgan.
Corgan’s head is a funny shape. It’s ah…I don’t know…funny lookin’.
Pavement > Smashing Pumpkins
Malkmus > Corgan
Is Billy still upset about “Range Life?”
I don’t understand what Corgan means and I could really give a f***. Pavement is the alternative dream.
Pavement has nothing on Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan was the band, and I don’t think Pavement can hold a candle to SP hem it comes to which band had a farther reach and more influence. Can Billy be a douche? Sure. Still, I find anyone who tries to act like he is nothing without the other SP members to be a bit douchey as well. SP was more about a sip d than it was who was backing Corgan on stage.
“sellout”, cries the singer in between Stevie Nicks lyrics. Then he turns to kiss Jessica Simpson.
stranger than fiction, that Billy.
and shouldn’t these 2 bands be on the SAME side?
IDK, I love SP and can’t stand Pavement. But if that’s against your all’s rules, then I must be punished. Also, please tell me what food to like, what color to like, and what clothes to wear.
Please do like veggie food, the colour black and wear grungy clothes as if you don’t care. But choose them wisely and carefully.
Who is Pavement? Really! Pumpkins is the main act to all those festivals with those guys, and you all know why… we must bury the hipster crap soon enough!
Thank God the best guys are the less known! Majority usually sucks, you know?
Pavement is something you stomp and Pumpkins is something you smash…Pavement will get stomped and Teh Pumpkins will being smashing!!!
I feel that Mr. Corgan’s sentiment would resonate more if the music created by Smashing Pumpkins didn’t suck root.
oh my god, why is this happening….
Well, you wait Mr. Corgan, wait until Malkmus figures out how to work the internet. Prepare for 140 character of seething…slightly irritated…okay, Pavement probably doesn’t care.
Exactly! I bet if Malkmus even hears of this he will have a slight laugh and move on with his life. Meanwhile it will consume Corgan’s life…FOREVER! Corgan’s ego is even bigger than the size of his head. Immense.
pavement is such a great band and the smashing pumkins are so mediocre comparatively
billy corgan pls stfu dbag
