Ask not what the London-born Jessie J can do for your country (she co-wrote Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA”; you’re welcome)—ask what your country can do for her when her debut arrives Stateside in January.
Judging by the 1.6 million-plus pageviews her “Do It Like a Dude” video has gotten in less than a week, it do pretty well. The 22-year-old’s aggro style, Clockwork Orange eyes and general aversion to pants are already garnering comparisons to Gaga, Ke$ha, and Nicky Minaj—though her bedroom a cappella covers and songs like “Sexy Silk” (from the recent Easy A soundtrack) showcase a girl who is less yelly, AutoTuned rasp-talker than full-on R&B belter.
But shoot first with the leotards and black-rhinestone lips, and ask questions later. Watch the borderline-NSFW “Dude” clip after the jump, then tell us what you think—excellent addition to the like-a-boy pantheon (see: Ciara, Beyonce) or lady Fight Club nightmare?

I sort of agree. Lady Gaga looks like she’s some ugly guy in drag. Whenever I see her without the bizarre costumes and the superheavy makeup, I’m surprised at how pretty she actually is underneath it all.
Exactly! I caught the “Bad Romance” video again a week ago and there’s a really short scene when she doesn’t look as made up and she ventures in to beautiful.
I don’t care if a singer is “beautiful” or “ugly”, all I care is that they are talented and make great music, period. You want “beautiful”, go pick up a fashion magazine. And while I have nothing but huge admiration and respect for the classic singers you named, I’m not so sure I’d want to harken back to an era where singers were only allowed to look one certain way. I happily welcome the Lena Horne and Peggy Lee type of singers whenever they pop up, but at the same time I embrace those who are individual and fearless enough to have their own image and style, even when it’s not in compliance with what is deemed cool or socially acceptable. At this point, we should know better than to judge an artist solely on their image. Besides, I wonder if you feel the same way about male singers as well. Can you only stand to watch the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin types, or are you more accommodating to different when it comes to male artists?

omg yes! i discovered jessie j a few weeks ago and i really hope she becomes big soon. i’m starting to see her more and more on different websites. OBSESSED with do it like a dude. hate the video, but whatever. also LOVE price tag and her song sexy silk for the movie easy A. and her singing is AMAZING. go watch any of her youtube videos. the girl’s got crazy vocals.

There is good stuff in the Top 40. You can’t just dismiss something because it’s different. Otherwise we’d never have heard the Rite of Spring.

Top 40 is for posers! The real music is out their they just don’t play it because they feel that the general public want’s club music that is so over rated! It’s sad but it’s also a good thing you can find music yourself and be exposed to a wide variety of music out their that you have never heard of before that is actually amazing and wonderful to the ears!
I didn’t say all of Top 40 is bad. Just a majority. There are only a few bright spots in the current state of Top 40 music. And Usher’s most recent albums weren’t good.

Seriously, only pretty people should be talented enough to deserve our attention! Fat people, too! While we’re at it, no one with a disability should even THINK about being aloud to be an entertainer; what if we have to SEE it?!?!

I appreciate this girl but really the best music coming out of the UK right now is from the band Westlife. Their new song “Safe” is beautiful!!
What really makes me sad is that I know her from that Easy A song Sexy Silk and thought she was great, so I checked out her youtube channel and loved her cover songs. But this song – it does not showcase her real talent AT ALL. I mean, she can do quite some justice for Whitney Houston songs and this is what they gave her? An auto-tuned, meaningless crap that’s aiming to be sold on shock value? And you know what – that’s totally gonna happen. It really will succeed because of that. Success and fame are so detached from quality nowadays that when people with talent want to succeed, they end up choosing being a crazy ho over a real singer even when they can really sing. I don’t really blame her, and I don’t have the energy in me to cry how we are getting things fundamentally wrong; I’m only in my early twenties and I feel I’m already outdated and old-fashioned and cranky for the current wave of “entertainment”. Well, best wishes to you Jessie, hopefully one day you will have earned enough money so you can actually make a good song (that won’t sell).

My biggest Brit obsession right now is Ed Drewett. He is hot as hell, with an incredible voice. YouTube his single “Champagne Lemonade”…hate that I can’t stream his actual video on there, its blocked in the U.S. but the song is a pop smash!
And as for Jessie…she looks like they spent an entire year making Lady Sovereign learn that she is actually a female, dressed her up in sexy slutty clothes and told her to slow down her rapping to just auto-tuned vocals. I mean this is what Lady Sovereign would be like if she were pretty right?

I think she’s trying to continue where Kesha left off, use the same January album release formula that Kesha used this year and have multiple hits from her album. Kesha did, and she had 4 hits from it. But there’s an audience that likes a salacious, sexual, naughty kind of dance pop that avoids the restrictions of pop radio and Jessie J might do well with her album.
“Price tag”, “Mama knows best”, “Who you are”, “Sexy silk”…
If you don’t like the way she looks, close your eyes and just listen… Dynamite voice!!!
