Some very well done albums take time to build. I think that explicitly titled song was good, but it wouldn’t have made the radio. And its 60s era soul vibe just doesn’t clash with the commercial dance pop, hip hop and even Taylor Swift’s hugely popular album that’s the rage right now.

I got the album, but i only managed to listen to it once and then went back to listening to new Bilal (which i bought on the same day) who i think has made the best R&B album of the year along with Janelle Monae. I thought Cee-Lo’s album would be inventive and groundbreaking like Janelle’s, but gave me a very generic first impression. Fantasia’s Back to Me feels generic too, but at least the girl sings her heart and ass off. I love his duet with Fantasia on The Thrill is Gone from her album (he actually uses the same lyric “it was real, but the thrill is gone” in song #8 on his album). The album is retro like Raphael Saadiq’s 2008 effort The Way I See It. It’s sweet and bubbly, although Cee-Lo’s voice is better suited for gritty material. The retro element doesn’t hook you up like Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.
He can’t quite achieve the balance between retro and modern. “Wake Up” John Legend’s collaboration with The Roots is superior in that aspect. If you are looking for an inventive R&B album you should buy Bilal’s Airtight’s Revenge or Janelle’s Archandroid.

I skipped work to go buy The Lady Killer! I, too, was disappointed at the lack of buzz that was circulated around the album. Anyone who hears ANY of Cee Lo’s albums can vouch that this man is a musical & lyrical genius. The only stumbling block is his promotion team, I believe. Anyone who supports grand music should buy The Lady Killer

Because Kid Cudi’s fanbase is stoners, and stoners are the most loyal fanbase on the face of the planet.

Man cannot live on chart-topping ability alone. Cee-Lo is a respectable artist, and I’m sure his No. 9 debut doesn’t make him regret what he’s put into the last 15 years of RIAA, SoundScan, or Nielsen contributions. He still has what so many other artists do not: integrity.

Poor promotion. I am a fan – grabbed the remix version of No Ones Ever Gonna Love early and bought F*** You and even streamed the album on NPR – but didn’t know it had dropped. So, if I didn’t know I imagine many others didn’t either. Let’s hope that people cop it on the run-up to XMAS.

I’m really enjoying his new cd (and also liked both gnarls barkley releases). It’s a lot more original than most of what’s out there even though its heavily influenced by “old school” music. And as someone who was actually around for and grew up with what is called “old school” I appreciate that he didn’t just mimic the music but took it further unlike some of the other 60s/70s influenced releases mentioned by other folks. Listen and judge for yourself but I know I haven’t stopped playing it!

This album completely got by me. I had no idea it had been released until 3 weeks after release.
