AMAs: Taylor Swift covers OneRepublic. Who was she singing to?

Christopher Polk/AMA2010/Getty Images for DCP

Taylor Swift went back to basics for her American Music Awards performance of “Back to December” — at first. Sitting at a piano, Swift brought vocals a tad somber for the Christmas-y set — but the singer stood up in the song’s final moments and switched gears, performing a brief cover of OneRepublic’s “Apologize.” I’ll leave whether or not her vocals were on point to you, Music Mixers, but, surely, many will also be wondering: Who was Swift singing to? (Please don’t tell me we’re about to open up this whole Kanye thing up again.) And more importantly: Straight or curly?

Haven’t seen it yet, but my money’s on Taylor Lautner. (And curly. Always curly.)

    • me

      no straight! definately straight

      • Melina Q

Of course she was singing about TL and I just loved loved loved her straight hair. So international fashionista and she reminded me of that one girl that got to the final of America’s Top Model but her name escape me at the moment. It was the one where they had the final in China and her competition was that girl that looks like Rihanna. Ugg! I hate it when that happens.

      • Cassandra

You’re thinking about Chantal and Saleisha. In my opinion, I think Taylor is prettier than Chantal. Something about Chantal’s eyes that aren’t as alluring as Taylor’s. Anyway, it was Cycle 9 of ANTM that you were thinking about hope it helps.

      • Calliope

Straight hair for me too. Taylor looked her age for a change. I don’t think she should ever go back to curly again. JMO.

      • Danii

Curls are her trademark so I don’t thik she’ll ever keep it straight on a definite basis. I like her changeup, but I feel she looks more country when in her curls.

      • Selena

Chantal so deserved to win cycle 9 of ANTM. So far I’ve only agreed to the wins in 3 cycles among all of them.

      • Selena

Oh yes and Taylor ruled the straight precision cut look!

    • Marlene

Curly or straigt, Taylor always looks flawless as a fashion icon. It’s no wonder she appears on all the magazine covers from Seventeen to Elle.

      • Anita

I’ve got most of her covers. She’s just so beautiful in all of them. She should do modeling at the same time but with her busy schedule I think it would be impossible.

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

I am content to see her with curls or flattened out golden tresses, but it must be awfully hard to flatten those curls and make it hold all day long. *o*

      • Selena

Latina here and I wholeheartedly agree with straightening curls is a chore within a chore. I think it’s safe to say that Taylor has the best professionals to work on hers to make sure it doesn’t burn in the process. Her hair was so sleek and shiny that night.

    • Corina

Her straight look was incredibly sexy.

      • Melina Q

I so agree and it kind of makes me want to straighten my hair but it’s such a hassle. Takes an hour at least and then you hit humidity and then it’s all for nothing.

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

Taylor once said she would never ever straighten her hair again just to impress a guy. I so totally agree with that and I’m sure that whenever she does flatten it out, she’s doing it for herself and only herself!

        *-*

      • Danii

I laughed so hard when I saw her with the BIG hair in the Target commercial with all the barnyard chickens flopping around and that one little hen Barred Plymouth Rock looking at the phonograph was just so cute!

      • Selena

The hens were so cute and I loved her Dolly Parton hair!

    • Jaden

Taylor was hella hot last night. Oh yeah and her looks were’nt bad either.

      • Anita

        hehehe

        :)

    • Tricia

Her lovely locks looks great curly or straight. She had a high fashion look last night and looked just like she just walked on to the runway of a fashion show.

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

Photographers just love her at all the photoshoots she does and says that she is so easy to work with and highly professional like a true supermodel.

      • Selena

She’s America’s top supermodel without even going on Tyra’s show to compete because she has the most magazine covers of anyone in the entertainment industry right now. Actual models don’t have much cover time nowadays as more and more celebrities take the covers. Are supermodels becoming extinct?

    • Kenley

Is there any question that this is about the other Taylor? @@

The straight look for Taylor is so different, she may not get recognized if she strolls around in public sporting that hairdo. Curls are her trademark.

  • candacetx

i hate to beat a dead horse… but really… why cant she sing better? There called ‘singing lessons’. Take some.

    • candacetx

      whoops *they’re

      • David

        Haha can’t spell.

      • candacetx

david…that wasn’t a misspelling.. it was simply a typo (that I corrected seconds after, btw). Feeling superior, are we?

  • Ted Sheckler

Prob to whoever made her gag while she was blowing him.

    • Marlene

      Tacky remark.

      • D

True remark. For 20 she’s really gettin around. Maybe it’s how she finds material.

      • Marlene

D must stand for dorky because that’s the quality of your reply.

    • Jaden

      You’re a turd and that’s a compliment Teddy Heckler.

  • Kelly

    1. She was good till she switched.
    2. Taylor Lautner
    3. I kinda like straight..

    • LOL

      Straight over curly every time.

      • Corina

Taylor has the versatility of having both curly or straight, although it must be a chore to straighten all those natural curls.

      • Melina Q

LOL you wouldn’t say that until you’ve tried to straighten curls. It takes forever. LOL!

      • Lynne

The straightaway with wispy bangs was a winner look for her. I hope she keeps it up.

      • Calliope

Me too. She would win any modeling contest with her straight sleek look.

      • Selena

Raises hand in agreement here. Her straight sleek look was so awesome.

  • ?????

“Lets not open up the kanye thing for discussion but seriously, wasn’t she singing to kanye?” Thats what I basically got off of this article. Really Kate Ward? Really?

  • Adam

“I’ll leave whether or not her vocals were on point to you, Music Mixers.”
God forbid that EW should ever criticize precious Taylor Swift. Face it, she is not a good live vocalist. End of story.

    • Kelly

Umm… EW usually rips her apart..

      • Adam

Really? Because EW gave her performance an A-. Go look through the AMA performance gallery.

    • Nerwen Aldarion

If you think EW is soft on Taylor Swift’s performances, you are crazy…

      • u

Really? Go sift through the AMAs Best/Worst performances gallery, they gave this girl a freakin’ A, the highest grade among all the performances (although the majority weren’t much better). And I think Adam was referring to the Taylor Swift fanatics who go batsh-t insane anytime someone dares to mention what a terrible singer she is.

      • Marlene

And U repeat ad nauseum over and over again how horrible she is every time she gives a performance. If you dislike her so so much, why do you keep watching and listening to her sing? Why don’t you take your hate back down to Hades with the rest of your minions? Oh yeah I forgot you like messing with 12 year olds and younger. Sicko!

      • u

        @ Marlene:

Says the person who stalks me on messageboards. I think you are representative of the IQ of the average Taylor Swift fan, which is equivalent to a shoe size. I don’t go around searching for Taylor Swift performances, however if I’m watching an award show and I’m forced to suffer through that non-singing hack, I will voice my opinion about her, and tough if you don’t like her. No go back to your milk & cookies.

      • u

        * tough if you don’t like IT.

      • Kenley

Says the imbecile who stalks Taylor posts with every given opportunity to spread caustic hatred upon her.

        @@

      • Marlene

haha. Look who’s placing the stalking card on the table. ‘U’ stalk every single performance post of Taylor’s whining about her vocals. If you don’t like her, get your lazy behind off the couch and turn the channel or mute the volume. It’s not difficult!!! I truly believe you “want” to listen to all her performances because no normal person would listen to a singer they don’t like time and time again when you know you’re not going to like the performance. I could care less if you post about any other singers or subject matters and I only reply back to your idiotic rants when you vilify Taylor on her posts so don’t even go there. You’re truly pathetic, even commenting at the wee hours of the morning on Taylor when you’re not even a fan. No one’s “forcing” you to watch Taylor. You have a choice and you CHOSE to view her performance. Haters are sooooo pathetic! Now descend down to Hades where you belong!

      • Queen Elizabeth II

        @ Kenley and Marlene:

Um, would you guys grow up and accept that people have opinions different from yours? If you love Taylor so much, then surely someone commenting negatively about her won’t affect that admiration, will it? And I highly doubt Taylor loses sleep over it with all the money she makes, so unless you’re on her payroll, stop being so melodramatic with your defenses of her. And since when is posting at 9:30 PM in the “wee hours of the morning”? You guys are just as pathetic as the “haters”.

  • Jack

The song was written as an apology to Taylor Lautner.

    Her straight hair looked sexy.

And, she is is a stronger artist than she is a vocalist. She can sing, but she is no Kelly Clarkson or Mariah Carey.

    • Jaime

Okay I love that you say KC!!! I love KC & her VOICE IS AMAZING~

    • Marlene

How many artist do have the powerful attacking vocals like Kelly or the hummingbird style of Mariah? They’re both special, but so is Taylor. She brings something intimate to her performance every time she sings.

    • Corina

Kelly is the most successful Idol and Mariah has the most #1s of any solo artist. You cannot compare Taylor to these two women.

      • Abbe

Actually, Carrie Underwood is the most successful Idol…

      • Danii

Well it depends on how you look at it. Carrie has sold a little bit more albums here in the US than Kelly, but Kelly is the digital singles download leader and radioplay leader among all idols. If you’re speaking of worldwide sales, Carrie lags behind Kelly by 10 million albums. Billboard ranks Kelly as the most successful amongst all Idols.

      • Torrin

That’s untrue. Underwood is “not” more successful than Clarkson at all. Billboard ranks the Top 100 Artists of the Decade (taking album sales and digital single sales and radio play all into consideration) and Kelly ranks 12th amongst all artists and 6th among women while Carrie ranks 50th amongst all artists and 17th among women. Both Taylor and Faith Hill are above Carrie in rankings coming in at 12th and 13th among women and 38th and 39th amongst all artists.

Carrie fans daydream too much about her actual success.

    • Jaden

Taylor doesn’t need to be Kelly Clarkson or Mariah Carey. She’s a Taylor Swift and her name rings just as loud or actually it’s much louder than those two previously mentioned talented women.

    • Melina Q

Oh gosh I really hate these comparisons. They’re all great artists that have done a lot of good with their music and each should be respected for their contributions to music. They’re all different but they’re all excellent in their own way.

    • Lynne

Kelly has power. Mariah has versatility. Taylor has songwriting mad skills with a vocal presence that comes from her heart to ours. She connects with her audience in a way most artists never are able to do with their fans.

      • Danii

I agree with your whole statement.

    • Kenley

Why do individuals that don’t care for Taylor feel the need to come to her posts and make comparative assessments with other artists? Taylor is a unique artist as are the other two women mentioned and I am sure they do not like their name being thrown about either. Just simply do not comment or read her articles if you don’t like her! Easy as apple pie.

      @@

      • Marlene

” Why do individuals that don’t care for Taylor feel the need to come to her posts and make comparative assessments with other artists? ”

        Because they’re:

        1. Jerks with nothing better to do
        2. Jealous of her success
        3. Pathetic haters
        4. Liars to make their singers look better
        5. Complain for the sake of ranting

CHOOSE 1 or all my apply!!!
        5.

      • Marlene

        * may instead of my

    • Seraphina CloudBurst

There’s only 1 Kelly Clarkson and 1 Mariah Carey and there’s the one and only Taylor Swift. When an upstart comes along in the future, you all will appreciate the talent that is Taylor Swift.

    • Selena

Why would Taylor want to be anyone else but herself? Her distinct style is one that others emulate now.

  • Sara

She looked great with the straight hair – a nice change. She looked very mature. I totally agree. She is a respectful artist who isn’t trying to be overly sexy. It’s strictly about the music. Her performance was great. Loved the unexpected change. It certainly seems that everyone from the AMAs had to do a song mash-up. She rocked it though.

    • Jaden

Yeah Taylor rocked it, both with her performance and her ashy golden straight locks.

      • Melina Q

Yes she did! Brava to her performance but I would’ve been scared to death coming down with those 4 thin wires supporting me.

    • Andrea

I thought she had a great performance and she deserved her A rating. It was so awesome how they lowered her down into the stage area and then she really stepped it up at the end. Loved it.

      • Selena

I do too because she brings something special to each of her performances and you never get a lip synch from her.

      • Andrea

Taylor fails to impress her fans. I loved her special last night. How many artists let you into their world and be a part of it? Hardly any in my opinio. Taylor is truly special.

      • Andrea

Oh fail. What I meant to say is Taylor “NEVER” fails to impress her fans. My bad.

  • Stephanie

She is cute as a button,BUT she was horrible(well at least she was after the switch)!

  • Ted Sheckler

    What would Jimmy Norton do?

    • lunaburning

      Ohhhh, the pope isn’t a pop-country fan. Toodely-doo!

  • Jess

Can we please get off the Kanye thing. The whole thing happened in 2009. It’s over and done. Move on world.

  • kathy60

She looked much better tonite than she did on the CMA’s. She looked more her own age – and not like a 1920′s flapper. As for the singing – still not there yet. She continually goes off key when singing live. She does not have the benefit of the auto-tune and you can hear it.

    • Melina Q

I agree. I don’t think the short Charleston look is good for her either. She looked so awesome last night.

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

Taylor’s a chameleon and she can adorn many looks and still be beautiful because her beauty comes from within. :)

      • Selena

        Good reply!

  • lola

WHO CARES?! why are we constantly speculating about this girl, what she sings about, and who she is singing to?
    UGH! that’s my rant lol

  • Beth

I loved her performance. She is getting better every performance. The straight hair was nice for a change.

    • Corina

I disagree. She sounded much better at the CMAs. I think there was problems last night because most of the perfomers were singing bad notes and not just Taylor.

      • Kenley

I tend to agree with that as I noticed most of the singers had issues with their respective performances also. Wonder what happened to cause this, but this certainly was not a specific issue that only Taylor had.

      • Calliope

Better stage effects at the AMAs but she did sound better at the CMAs gotta admit.

  • carrie

Seriously, Taylor seems like a sweet person so I won’t be disrespectful but she writes better than she sings. She is not good live. I get it. People love her personality and she has catchy songs, but she is not a good vocalist.

    • KC

And neither is Bob Dylan. Not that I am comparing Taylor Swift and Bob Dylan…I’ve always felt that she has a (writing) voice that resonates with girls of a certain age. She is the voice of her generation (for now), so I say give the kid some credit. She’s not some untalented schmuck who is a “superstar” like some other young ones out there (even though I agree, she is not a good vocalist).

      • carrie

I agree that she is talented no doubt. She is a good writer and some of her stuff is catchy, thats why I will not be disrespectful and slam her. At least she is not writing songs that have to have every word bleeped out.

    • Marlene

Perfect vocals are so overrated. I’ll take Taylor’s heart to heart emotional performances any day over pitch perfect monotonous music.

      • carrie

I disagree. I want music that sounds so incredible that it touches you, like Carrie or Martina. I am a fan of both of these ladies. I get it, she seems like a perfectly nice girl, and some of her songs are really catchy, i will admit, but to say perfect vocals on a singer is overated is like saying a skilled docter is overated.

      • Corina

No one seemed to be “pitch perfect” last night and that makes you wonder what was going on with the sound or mixing or whatever made the performers sing bad notes.

    • Marlene

If you feel that way, then please go worship your goddess namesake on her own forums and leave Taylor posts free from your negative rants.
