Lil Wayne is home! What music does he need to hear ASAP?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

lil-wayneImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comLil Wayne came home from Rikers Island prison today. At the moment, he is no doubt celebrating with his closest friends and family, maybe starting to think about hitting the studio later. Sometime soon, though, he’s going to have to start catching up on all the new tunes he missed out on during his eight months behind bars.

Weezy is known as a voracious music fan. This is the guy who got put in solitary confinement for keeping MP3 equipment in his cell. Leaving out whatever he might have heard before that gear was confiscated last month, he has an entire spring, summer, and fall of new music to get through.

EW’s Brad Wete and I were in a helpful mood, so we came up with 10 suggestions to start with. Check out our list after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Hear Pink's newest single, 'F***in' Perfect'

Pink already has a fantastic single, “Raise Your Glass,” out right now. But the pop star has released a second original tune off her Nov. 16 album, Greatest Hits…So Far. The new track is called “F***in’ Perfect” and I think the same could be said for the tune. It’s another great anthem from Pink, showcasing her throaty vocals and rebel punk attitude. I just love this lady! Listen below to (the very NSFW) “F***in’ Perfect”…

What do you think Music Mix-ers? Is this song better than “Raise Your Glass?”

Taylor Swift sets Hot 100 chart records

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , ,

Taylor-SwiftImage Credit: Joseph Anthony Baker; Apple CorpsTaylor Swift‘s amazing week just keeps getting better. The latest edition of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart features an incredible 11 appearances from Swift, all songs from her new album, Speak Now. This is a record on three counts.

First: Swift is the only female artist to have that many songs on the Hot 100 at once. Her only competition, per Billboard, comes from David Cook, who also notched 11 charting singles right after he won American Idol in May 2008, and the Beatles, who had 12 songs on the Hot 100 for two weeks in April 1964 and 14 charting songs for another week in the same month.

Second: The Beatles’ charting singles came from multiple projects (Please Please Me, With the Beatles, and the soon-to-be-released A Hard Day’s Night). Cook’s were individually sold tunes that he had sung on Idol. This makes Swift the first artist ever to have this many simultaneously charting singles all drawn from a single album.

Third: Cook didn’t write his Idol songs, and the Beatles’ record-setting weeks included a number of covers like “Twist and Shout” and “Roll Over Beethoven.” Swift famously wrote all the songs on Speak Now by herself. So she’s also the only artist to have this many Hot 100 appearances all of which were written by the artist in question.

Pretty impressive, no? Let us know what you think of Swift’s latest accomplishment.

R.E.M. reveals details of 'expansive,' guest-packed new album: Should we be worried?

Filed under: Let's Argue!, Music, News and tagged: ,

REMImage Credit: Erika Goldring/Retna LtdR.E.M. has finished recording Collapse Into Now, its fifteenth studio LP, according to a new interview with Spin. This is excellent news for R.E.M. fans—maybe. The previous decade was a bumpy one for us, as the numerous awesome R.E.M. albums of the ’80s and ’90s (several of which remain severely underrated) led into 2001′s Reveal and 2004′s Around the Sun, both generally regarded as subpar. Many fans, including myself, began to believe in R.E.M. again after 2008′s much better Accelerate. Will Collapse Into Now be a worthy follow-up or another turkey? Let’s look at the clues from that Spin interview… READ FULL STORY »

Ke$ha tops Billboard singles chart, while Willow Smith makes a big debut

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , , ,

Far East Movement’s “Like a G6″ has landed on an unfamiliar runway this week. After a few weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, it’s been knocked to No. 2 by Ke$ha‘s “We R Who We R,” which debuts huge at the top spot. In turn, Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are” also steps back one spot to No. 3. Aside from Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me” falling from No. 9 to No. 12, the rest of the top 10 is filled with those who comfortably sat there last week. There are some interesting happenings just outside of it, though.

Willow Smith’s debut single “Whip My Hair” debuts at No. 11, which is huge for someone just taking their first crack at this. And Taylor Swift’s remarkable week continues. Her highest charting track may only be “Sparks Fly” at No. 17. But she has 10 other singles in the Hot 100 as well–all from her Speak Now. Check out the entire top 10 list below.

1. Ke$ha, “We R Who We R”

2. Far East Movement, “Like a G6″

3. Bruno Mars, “Just the Way You Are”

4. Rihanna, “Only Girl (In The World)”

5. Nelly, “Just A Dream.”

6. Usher, “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love”

7. Trey Songz “Bottoms Up”

8. Katy Perry, “Teenage Dream”

9. Taio Cruz, “Dynamite”

10. Pink, “Raise Your Glass”

Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block to tour together. Let the fainting commence

Rumors of this union made in former teeny-bopper heaven have been swirling since summer, but Ryan Seacrest confirmed reports of the cleverly titled NKOTBSB tour this morning on his radio show. You may scream now.

The tour will kick off in summer 2011, about one year after the two bands merged on stage for a performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York. (Clip below.) In fact, rumors of the bands’ joint tour started shortly after the Backstreet’s surprise appearance during the NKOTB concert in June. They’ll reunite next on Nov. 21 for a performance on the American Music Awards. Viewing party at my place.

Now, I have made no secret of my undying devotion to one band on this tour, but two for the price of one sounds even better to me, Mixers. But what about you? Are you as excited as I am for this musical merger? (You can be honest. I’m in no place to judge.) Feel free to join me in a squeal, a gasp of excitement, and a day-long NKOTB/BSB music marathon to celebrate.

Kanye West responds to George W. Bush about Katrina controversy: 'I definitely can understand the way he feels'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Kanye-West-BushImage Credit: Will Ragozzino/Getty Images; Janet Mayer/PR PhotosKanye West has responded to former president George W. Bush’s recent statement regarding his controversial post-Hurricane Katrina remarks. West’s surprising reply: Now that five years have gone by, he can sympathize more with the man he once said “doesn’t care about black people.”

Bush recently told Matt Lauer that hearing West say those words during a Hurricane Katrina benefit telethon was “a disgusting moment.” He recalled telling his wife at the time that West’s comments were in fact the single worst moment of his presidency. Today, an interviewer from a Houston radio station asked West for his thoughts on the matter.

“I definitely can understand the way he feels, to be accused of being a racist in any way, because the same thing happened to me, where I got accused of being a racist,” West replied, referring to the aftermath of his run-in with Taylor Swift last fall. “For both situations, it was basically a lack of compassion that America felt in that situation. With him, it was a lack of compassion of him not rushing, him not taking the time to rush down to New Orleans. For me, it was a lack of compassion of cutting someone off in their moment. But nonetheless, I think we’re all quick to pull a race card in America. And now I’m more open, and the poetic justice that I feel, to have went through the same thing that he went [through] — and now I really more connect with him on just a humanitarian level.”

That’s an extremely gracious way of looking at things, to say the least. Listen to the radio clip after the jump (via Rap Radar), then let us know: What do you think of Kanye West’s new attitude toward Bush? READ FULL STORY »

Ke$ha's 'We R Who We R' debuts at No. 1 on 'Billboard' Hot 100

Tagged: , ,

KeshaIn a triumph for armchair grammarians and high school English teachers everywhere, Ke$ha has proceeded directly to the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 with her latest LOL-speak single, “We R Who We R.”

The speedy ascent of the lead track from her upcoming Cannibal makes her the first female to debut at No. 1 since Britney’s “3″ took group-sex arithmetic to the top spot in 2009, and only the 17th artist in the chart’s overall history to achieve that feat.

Can she sustain it? And will Cannibal ultimately outperform Animal? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
