Jay-Z discusses shooting his brother when he was 12: News to you?

Categories: Jay-Z

Jay-Z‘s new interview with the U.K.’s Guardian includes some juicy quotes about the day when, at age 12, he shot his drug-addicted older brother in the shoulder for stealing a piece of jewelry. “I thought my life was over,” the rapper says of the incident, which took place 28 years ago in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects. “I thought I’d go to jail for ever.” His brother recovered from the shooting and declined to press charges, but for obvious reasons young Shawn Carter remained shaken. “It was terrible,” he tells the Guardian. “I was a boy, a child. I was terrified.”

It’s a gripping story — but is it a new one? While the Guardian states that Jay-Z “has never publicly talked about [the shooting] before,” and other publications have repeated this claim, a quick Google search reveals 2003 pieces by CBS News, Time, and the New York Observer that all mention the event. Last year, he went over it with Oprah Winfrey. And of course, as the Guardian acknowledges, he rapped quite movingly about shooting his brother way back on 1997′s “You Must Love Me.” The point here isn’t to play “gotcha” with the Guardian‘s interview. It’s a good read, and it’s true that none of those older articles include such vivid quotes from Jay-Z about the shooting. But serious fans had been aware of this chapter in his past for many years. Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Ke$ha lead off a huge music Monday: What albums are you buying?

After months of ever-quotable interviews, ballerina adorned performances, defiant rap verses, and some hilarious tweets, the day has finally come. Kanye West‘s highly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is out today! The grade A album delivers on all fronts, with rhymes that are both brash and heartfelt and maximalist beats rich with strings, horns, and bass. In a year that’s seen stellar hip-hop albums from Eminem, Rick Ross, and Drake, this one reigns supreme.

Also out today is feisty newcomer Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday. Her debut set, boasting her soft rap ballads “Right Thru Me” and “Your Love,” also features appearances from Kanye West, Drake, and Eminem. And after  scoring several No. 1 songs at the top of the year, Ke$ha’s Cannibal EP with eight new songs hit stores as well. Its lead single “We R Who We R” topped Billboard‘s hot 100 chart a few weeks back.

The loaded Monday continues with The Rolling Stones releasing their The Rolling Stones 1964-1969 box set, R&B titan Ne-Yo letting Libra Scale loose  and Justin Bieber going simple, releasing his My Worlds Acoustic.  So this question is simple: What albums are you buying this week? Let us know.

On Sunday, November 28, MTV will feature her story in My Time Now, an hour-long documentary following Minaj as she returns to her homeland of Trinidad, spends time with her family in Queens, and prepares for the launch of her debut album. Says the now-25-year-old, “For the first time people will see Onika—that’s all I’ve ever wanted. This film is my heart and soul, the visual component to Pink Friday.”

AMAs: Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block knock our socks off

Mazur AMA 2010/WireImage.com

To quote Usher: Oh. My. God. The American Music Awards got a blast from boy band past tonight when the Backstreet Boys took the stage with New Kids on the Block, forming one powerful, parenthetical song title-loving group called NKOTBSB. (The two groups are slated to tour together next summer. Squee!) They sang some of their greatest hits during the well-choreographed performance: Backstreet’s “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” “I Want It That Way,” and “Larger Than Life,” and New Kids’ “Step By Step,” and “You Got It (The Right Stuff.)” The two groups clearly rehearsed more than any other artist who took the stage tonight, and the audience, in turn, loved it. Anyone old enough to be a child/teen/music lover of the 1990s could be seen mouthing along to most of the lyrics. (Watch the performance after the jump.)

AMAs: Artist of the Year goes to...

Baby, baby, baby, oh, did Justin Bieber have a big night at the American Music Awards! The tween sensation picked up three awards during the evening (and a fourth off-air), including the night’s biggest honor: Artist of the Year. (Fun fact: Bieber is officially the youngest to take home the top prize.) And though he dedicated his first two awards to God and Michael Jackson, he saved the third win for his mentor — taking the stage for his acceptance speech, Bieber said, “You know, I really got this opportunity really about a year-and-a-half ago, and really was embraced by a man named Usher Raymond. And I don’t know, but I feel like he’s had such an amazing ride, and it would only be right if I invited up here to share this with me. Not only my mentor, but my best friend and my big brother. I love you man.”

Sweet gesture?

AMAs: Ke$ha brings destruction, glitter

Predictably, Ke$ha brought along plenty of glitter and confetti for her American Music Award performance — but she also surprised the audience by bringing along instruments as well. Starting on the keyboards for “Take It Off,” the singer channeled C-3PO with some robotic attire, then invited a pack of dancing, shirtless, mullet-sporting men to join her for a rendition of “We R Who We R.” Naturally, Ke$ha had to end the performance with some sort of a shock moment — she capped it off by destroying her very pretty, very expensive-looking guitar. Eek — and the shredder in me shudders.

What did you think of Ke$ha’s eclectic performance?

AMAs: Taylor Swift covers OneRepublic. Who was she singing to?

Taylor Swift went back to basics for her American Music Awards performance of “Back to December” — at first. Sitting at a piano, Swift brought vocals a tad somber for the Christmas-y set — but the singer stood up in the song’s final moments and switched gears, performing a brief cover of OneRepublic’s “Apologize.” I’ll leave whether or not her vocals were on point to you, Music Mixers, but, surely, many will also be wondering: Who was Swift singing to? (Please don’t tell me we’re about to open up this whole Kanye thing up again.) And more importantly: Straight or curly?

AMAs: Justin Bieber wins second award of the night, thanks Michael Jackson

He might have thanked God in his first acceptance speech of the night, but Justin Bieber took the opportunity to thank another legend during his second speech: Michael Jackson. Said Bieber after accepting the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, “I want to thank Michael Jackson because without Michael Jackson, none of us would be here.” Of course, before moon-walking off the stage, Bieber made sure to make everyone watching feel old. Said the young singer about fellow category nominee: “I have been singing Eminem since I was three.”

AMAs: Pregnant Pink takes it easy for once

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images for DCP

The usually death-defying performer Pink let her back-up dancers do the heavy lifting during her performance of “Raise Your Glass” at the American Music Awards. Surrounded by skateboarders and gymnasts, Pink, wearing a pair of harem pants hiding her burgeoning belly, mostly walked around the busy stage. But can you blame her? The singer just announced her pregnancy! (And acknowledged it again by rubbing her tummy as exiting the stage.) Still, Pink showed off her powerful vocals — and her tendency to include the bizarre in her performances. What was up with that glitter guy?

Did you enjoy Pink without the bells and whistles?

AMAs: Nicki Minaj interrupts award to pimp 'Pink Friday'

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images for DCP

It’s not quite pulling a Kanye, but Nicki Minaj did interrupt tonight’s American Music Awards to promote her upcoming debut album, Pink Friday. While presenting the award for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist, Minaj interrupted fellow presenter Taio Cruz — who was seconds away from announcing the winner in the category, Rihanna — in order to announce the Nov. 22 release of the album. Sure, it might have been rude, but then again, there are far more obnoxious ways to promote your work.
