AMAs: Justin Bieber brings out the gospel choir

Filed under: Music, TV and tagged: ,

Just like Miley, Justin Bieber brought it down a few notches tonight during his American Music Awards performance of “Pray.” Beginning the song sitting at the piano, Bieber didn’t choose to hide behind his dance moves, instead belting out the inspiring tune with impressive strength. But the production got even bigger — surrounded by images of the troops, children, and religious symbols, Bieber was bolstered by a gospel choir to make the second half of his song even more powerful. And the audience seemed to dig it — Usher proudly showed his support for his mentee with an enthusiastic round of applause following the performance.

Did you did it, Music Mixers?

AMAs: Katy Perry literally brings the fireworks

Filed under: Music, TV and tagged: ,

Normally, I would never think that the oft-scantily clad Katy Perry belongs in the same sentence as little kids. (Especially after the Sesame Street debacle.) But the singer appeared alongside a children’s choir to kick off her “Firework” performance — and the results were sizzling. But things got even hotter as soon as Perry shed layers of clothing (who else figured there had to be something under that mesh mess?) and brought out the pyrotechnics. Dangerous!

Did her performance burn you up, Music Mixers?

AMAs: Taylor Swift picks up third consecutive award for Favorite Country Female Artist

Yet another award belongs to Taylor Swift: The young country singer continues to be an awards show darling, picking up her third — that’s right, third — consecutive American Music Award for Favorite Country Female Artist. And though she’s not nominated in any other categories for the evening, she should make an impression later in tonight with her performance — and her newly straightened locks.

AMAs: Miley Cyrus goes goth

She’s gone for shock value before during awards shows, but tonight, Miley Cyrus went demure — and goth — for her performance of “Forgiveness and Love” during the American Music Awards. Though the singer was reportedly set to sing her cover of Bret Michaels’ “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” during the awards show, Cyrus instead chose the ballad “Forgiveness and Love,” which certainly seemed to at least nod at her parents’ recent divorce: “The only thing that our hearts are made of / are the acts of forgiveness and love / the only thing real when push comes to shove / are the acts of forgiveness and love.” Indeed, the show’s cameramen were aware of the tabloid-worthy news of Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus’ split — right after the young singer finished her performance, the cameras panned to her mother in the audience.

Tell us: What did you think of Miley’s grown-up (in a different way this time) performance?

Tim McGraw: When a concert video is acceptable

Tim McGraw premiered his new video, “Felt Good On My Lips,” on CMT.com today. First thing you need to know: He’s talking about a woman’s name, a song, a drink, and a cherry lipgloss-coated kiss. Secondly, it’s a concert video. Normally I find those a bit boring. This one, however, kept my attention. Because McGraw performs in large venues, in order to keep us experiencing the massive crowd, the camera has to repeatedly shoot McGraw from behind.

Accuse me of objectifying him. You’re right. But if he didn’t want to be admired in those skin-tight jeans, he would’ve a) worn darker denim and b) asked for the footage at the following timecodes to be trimmed: :8, :17, :34, :53, 1:04, 1:34, 2:25, 3:19, 3:35, 3:40, and 3:49.

To the director’s credit, McGraw was actually shot from the waist up a lot, too.

Watch the video below (the song is good, did we mention that?): READ FULL STORY »

Arcade Fire debut Spike Jonze's dramatic video for 'The Suburbs': Watch here

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

The new video that Spike Jonze directed for Arcade Fire‘s song “The Suburbs” begins, fittingly enough, with teenagers horsing around in an anonymous suburb. They ride bikes! They send their bikes crashing into things for fun! Then things take an unsettling turn. Why are those kids shooting some sort of weapons at trucks? What’s with all the military troops hanging around?

You’ll have to watch the clip for yourself to see where it all ends up, but let’s just say Arcade Fire seem interested in exposing the darkness and violence underneath those cheery suburban appearances. Take a look at the video after the jump and let us know what you think. READ FULL STORY »

T.I. calls current prison stint 'truly a pain I've never felt before'

Rapper T.I., born Clifford Harris, recently returned to an Arkansas state penitentiary to serve 11 months for parole violation, and he is calling the experience “truly a pain I have never felt before and that’s saying a lot for a n—- who’s been down locked up as many times as I have.”

I see this as a real ass whoopin’,” he writes on his blog of serving the sentence, four months longer than the one he finished earlier this year for a 2007 felony weapons charge. “I don’ t know what effect this will have on my life moving forward but I’m certainly sick and mother f*cking tired of going to jail, juvie, prison, the pen, correctional facilities or whatever else you want to call it.”

“I’d have been better off doing a 5-10 year bid one time than going in time and time again for days, weeks and months for the last 15 years of my life,” he continues. “Even though it’s been a long road, I’m still standing, barely but nevertheless still standing.”

“At one time I thought my motivation for continuing was for my fans, my partna Philant, my pops, my grandmama, even for the haters or the people I let down. But nah… I got to do this s— for me!!! I’ll be God damned if I’ve come all this way and made it through so much hell to let it go down like this! F*ck that! If an hour in the dark is worth a second in the sun then pass me my mother f*ckin’ shades cause I’m ready to cash my darkest hours in…ASAP!!”

Greyson Chance tells us why he's a huge KISS fan

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Here’s something you might not know about Greyson Chance, the 13-year-old Oklahoman whose YouTube covers of artists like Lady Gaga are so popular: He’s a big fan of ’70s rockers KISS.

“I actually watched the Glee episode where they did Gaga and KISS,” says Chance, who just stopped by EW’s office. “I was like, ‘Wow, I’m going to start getting into this.’ I bought the KISS biggest hits record on iTunes, and it just started blowing my mind.”

His favorite KISS tunes are the two performed by the Glee cast this May: “Shout It Out Loud” and “Beth,” both originally released in 1976. “I love them because they can get up on stage and they can party so hard with these big rock party songs [like 'Shout It Out Loud'],” he says. “With their makeup and all, they’re so dramatic. I love theatricality. The way that they can do that and then go into a slow ballad like ‘Beth,’ it’s very inspirational.”

Chance is currently busy recording his debut album for release next spring on Ellen DeGeneres’ eleveneleven record label. Seasoned music industry professionals including Ron Fair and the Matrix are helping him in the studio. Despite his KISS fandom, he says his album is more likely to draw inspiration from contemporary bands like Snow Patrol and Coldplay.

Are you surprised that Greyson Chance is a KISS fan? Looking forward to his album? Let us know.
