Sarah Palin calls 'American Idol' contestants 'talent deprived'

Sarah Palin’s latest book, America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag, won’t be released until next Thursday, but fightin’ words from it have already leaked—and her American heart does not reflect fondly on the likes of Lee DeWyze.

“Did you ever wonder where the producers of American Idol come up with the seemingly endless supply of people who can’t sing but are deluded enough to get in front of a national television audience and screech out a song anyway?” Palin asks, according to a report on MTV.com.

Contestants on reality talent shows like Idol, she says, are victims of “the cult of self-esteem. No one they have encountered in their lives—from their parents to their teachers to their president—wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth.”

Simon, however, gets a pass: “Cowell can be a little harsh at times, but he upholds the highest standards and something in us recognizes and responds to that,” she writes. “Unfortunately Cowell is almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths.”

Without hard-truth tellers like him, she writes, “a growing chorus of voices is trying to convince our kids that hard work isn’t necessary anymore.”

And with that, her daughter Bristol, currently a controversial finalist on Dancing With the Stars replied: [step ball change thud] “Shazam!”

Taylor Swift is still busy selling her new album, Speak Now. You may have heard that she’s got an hour-long concert special airing on NBC Thanksgiving night at 8 p.m. ET that will find her performing in Central Park and on top of a tour bus on Hollywood Boulevard. She’ll do nine songs: “Mine,” “Sparks Fly,” “Story of Us,” “Long Live,” “Haunted,” “Mean,” “Back to December,” “Enchanted,” and the title track. We’ll also get behind-the-scenes footage of her recording and promoting the new album.

To promote the special, she’ll be stopping by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday, and visiting E!’s Chelsea Lately on Wednesday. I’d say that the Chelsea Handler interview is what I’m looking forward to most. Handler is brazen enough to ask Swift the questions we all ponder quietly. The question is: Will Swift cut loose and answer them?

DMX arrested in Arizona for violating probation

Rapper Earl “DMX” Simmons, 39, was arrested last night in Arizona for several probation violations, reports Radar Online. He reportedly possessed cocaine, Oxycontin without a prescription, and was driving on a suspended license. DMX, who in the late ’90s and early oughts was considered one of hip-hop’s elite, is no stranger to such legal run-ins. He’s been arrested many times for issues involving assault and drug abuse.

Akon vows to never release any more Michael Jackson tracks

Whether you like it or not, Michael Jackson‘s first of many posthumous albums, Michael, is just weeks away from release. Earlier this week, “Hold My Hand,” produced by and featuring Akon, hit the Net as its official single. Even though he let this track out of his vault, don’t expect Akon to release any more M.J. collabs ever again. As he tells MTV in a recent interview, the only reason “Hold My Hand” is featured on Michael is that it’s actually a finished track.

“‘Hold My Hand’ was one of the records that was actually fully complete,” Akon says. “The rest of the ideas aren’t fully complete. They’re just ideas, concepts, and harmonies which the world will probably never see, because I would never put it out unfinished. So I might just burn it after this interview… We’ve done plenty of records outside of this. But they were just incomplete.” ‘Kon’s sentiment is similar is the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am, who refuses to release any of the work he and Jackson did during the latter years of his life.

Michael is reportedly mostly comprised of several unfinished and scrapped songs from prior albums. Are you looking forward to the album?

Cee Lo: Why wasn't his album a hit?

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

cee-loImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty ImagesThe great Cee Lo Green limped on to the Billboard 200 chart this week with just 41,000 copies sold of his new album The Lady Killer. That got him to No. 9, but it’s hard to see this as anything but a  weak opening number, especially considering how much Cee Lo had going for him in the year of “F— You.” What went wrong?

The simple fact is that all the buzz around “F— You” didn’t translate into album sales. That isn’t entirely surprising. Thanks in part to the profanity in its chorus, it was only a medium-sized chart hit, peaking at No. 17 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, so it never achieved measurable ubiquity. Still, it certainly felt like “F— You” and its inferior sanitized version, “Forget You,” were everywhere this summer and fall. Just in the last few weeks, Cee Lo performed the song on Late Night With David Letterman and The Colbert Report. Unfortunately for him, the episode of Glee where guest star Gwyneth Paltrow sang it didn’t air until this Tuesday, too late to affect his first-week Nielsen SoundScan tally. Still, this was a pretty well-run media campaign. Cee Lo worked hard to keep himself in the public eye as his album release date approached, and none of it seems to have mattered. READ FULL STORY »

Susan Boyle pushes Taylor Swift to No. 2 on Billboard 200 chart, 'The Gift' reigns supreme

Almost a year after releasing her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, Susan Boyle is back atop the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her holiday album, The Gift, sold 318,000 albums in its opening week. Last week’s No. 1, Taylor Swift’s Speak Now, drops to No. 2 with 212,000 copies sold. Kid Cudi‘s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager opens at No. 3, selling 169,000 copies. That’s 65,000 more copies than his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day sold last year with its No. 4 charting. Check out the rest of the top 10 below.

Beyoncé's Heat ad too steamy for UK daytime TV

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged: , ,

beyonce-heatImage Credit: George Napolitano/FilmMagic.comBeyoncé‘s ad for her new Heat perfume is sexy. It’s suggestive and sultry. But it’s certainly not X-rated. Still, the commercial’s getting too-hot-for-TV treatment from the U.K. Advertising Standards Authority. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the ad has been pushed to only airing after 7:30pm. The minute-long clip starts off steamy, with her in a bathtub and then slipping into a red dress that exposes a healthy portion of her chest. Though they didn’t give it the dreaded “explicit” tag, the A.S.A. did decide it could be harmful to kids.

“We considered that Beyoncé’s body movements and the camera’s prolonged focus on shots of her dress slipping away to partially expose her breasts created a sexually provocative ad that was unsuitable to be seen by young children,” the A.S.A. said Wednesday.
