Guns 'n' Roses to release new album, promise it won't take nine million years

Filed under: Let's Argue!, News and tagged: ,

axl-roseImage Credit: Landmark/PR PhotosYes, an entire Bieber was gestated, raised, and brought to saucily-coiffed stardom in the time it took to make Chinese Democracy.

But Axl’s bandmates swear that infamously delayed album’s followup will arrive sooner–much sooner. Guitarist DJ Ashba told rockitoutblog.com that the group is “throwing around a bunch of ideas” for a new album, and that Axl has “a lot of good s— up his sleeve”: “It should be good. We got a lot of good stuff on the plate coming out,” he said, emphasizing that it “won’t take as long, I promise” as Democracy.

He also assured fans that the current incarnation of G’n'R will tour the States again next February, after running a number of dates in Asia and Canada through January. So the boys are staying active, and apparently very busy.

What do you think, readers—can whatever new music the band releases reward fans’ expectations at this point? Or is it finally time that Axl make like Phil Collins and quit this bitch?

Kanye-WestImage Credit: D Dipasupil/FilmMagic.comKanye West has canceled a scheduled performance on NBC’s Today show in the wake of his unpleasant interview with Matt Lauer. “I’m not performing on the Today Show for obvious reasons,” the rapper tweeted early this morning. “I’m so happy the world got to see just a small piece of ‘the set up.’…I blatantly said I’m not performing on a tweet and to everyone around me and the next day they still announced a performance….Do you guys see what I’m saying now?”

West was widely expected to back out of the performance after airing his concerns with Lauer’s interviewing techniques. “I don’t hate Matt Lauer,” he added on Twitter today. “We don’t promote hate. Fiery Furnaces exclusive news: Ten new albums on the way from band members

matthew-friedbergerBig news for fans of the Fiery Furnaces! Both core members of the eccentric indie-rock sibling act are working on various solo projects, and they’re also reconvening soon to record another album together. All told, the next calendar year could quite possibly see a grand total of ten new Furnaces-related releases, most of which have been top-secret until now. Read on for exclusive details on the exciting developments in the Friedberger family.

The bulk of the ten upcoming releases will come from the Furnaces’ Matthew Friedberger, who is planning no less than eight solo albums for a series he’s aptly titled Solos. Friedberger phoned the Music Mix recently from Marseille, France, to explain. “Playing rock — except for driving around and carrying equipment in and out of a van and getting bedbugs from the motel and that kind of thing — you don’t have to work very hard, so it seems,” says the sardonic musician. “So I thought it would be fun to have way too many things to do.” READ FULL STORY »

The Music Mix recommends: Tennis (the band)

pat-and-alainaThis year’s Endless Summer award for for special achievements in garage-pop revivalism has probably already gone to L.A.’s Best Coast, a band who bled from the blogosphere to Billboard’s Top 40 album chart in July, and have been comfortably ensconced in the iPod shuffles of baristas and Urban Outfitters visual merchandisers ever since.

I’m smitten, though, with married Denver duo Tennis, recently signed to Fat Possum and due to tour this winter with labelmates the Walkmen.

In place of Best Coast’s stoned Trapper Keeper lyrics about weed, boyfriends and cats, Tennis’s crisp, finger-snappy ditties drag sweet surf jangle into the fresh open air. (Literally: Pat Riley and wife Alaina Moore, above, spent eight months sailing the North Atlantic, writing songs along the way).

Listen to the duo’s calling card “Marathon,” a song that sounded merely delicious on a summer mixtape, but feels like a shot of pure sunshine serotonin in the dark slog of post-Daylight Savings November:

Michael Jackson controversy: Estate attorney cites proof that he sang 'Breaking News'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Michael-Jackson-240.jpgImage Credit: Tim Whitby/Getty ImagesWhen “Breaking News,” the first single from Michael Jackson‘s posthumous album Michael, hit the Web this week, some fans immediately began questioning whether it really featured Jackson’s vocals. Now a lawyer for the late King of Pop’s estate has responded to the rumors with a detailed account of the evidence that “Breaking News” is legit.

In a letter directed to fans and subsequently published online today, attorney Howard Weitzman says the estate contacted a long list of producers, engineers, and other collaborators who had worked with Jackson in his lifetime. All of them, he says, agreed that “Breaking News” and two other songs from the same 2007 sessions were indeed sung by Jackson. The estate and Sony Music also hired two forensic musicologists to compare the a cappella recordings with other known examples of Jackson’s voice. They, too, certified the tracks. Finally, the letter states that Jackson soundalike Jason Malachi told the estate he had nothing to do with these songs.

“Sony decided that, given the overwhelming objective evidence resulting from the exhaustive investigations outlined above, they wanted to release a record that included three of [the 2007 recordings]—because they believed, without reservation, that the lead vocal on all of those tracks were sung by Michael Jackson,” Weitzman writes. “Although there still seem to be concerns being expressed in some quarters about the authenticity of the lead vocals, notwithstanding the opinion of those who worked with Michael, and two independent forensic analysts, ultimately, Michael’s fans will be the judges of these songs, as they always are. We take all fan comments very seriously, and as I’d stated above, there is nothing more important to the Estate than Michael’s music, his legacy and his fans.”

A representative for the Jackson estate noted that Weitzman’s letter is not an official press release, but vouched for its authenticity. The full letter can be read after the jump.

What do you think? Does the letter convince you that Michael Jackson sang lead on “Breaking News”? Speak up in comments. READ FULL STORY »

Kanye West on 'Today' show: Watch the interview he called 'brutal'

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged: ,

kanye-west-today-showImage Credit: NBCThe Today show interview that Kanye West called “VERY BRUTAL” on Twitter yesterday aired in part today, letting the world see the exchange that made West tweet, “I feel very alone very used very tortured very forced very misunderstood very hollow very very misused.”

After introducing the segment this morning, Today host Matt Lauer played West’s remarks about accusing George W. Bush of racism after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “As far as it being the worst moment of his presidency, you know, I can’t really speak to that,” the rapper said. “But his take, his explanation, I completely agree with and I empathize with totally.”

The trouble in their interview began a moment later, when the Today show cued footage of Lauer’s recent interview with Bush. “I didn’t need you guys to show me the tape in order to prompt my emotions or whatever,” West said in an annoyed tone. “I don’t need all the jazz…Can we be quiet for a second?”

Pressed by Lauer to further explain his thoughts on the Bush incident, West went back on message. “I want to give it the exact perfect wording, because everything I say gets taken and drawn into headlines,” he noted. “I’m here to man up to different mistakes that I made, and speak to the moment when I pegged George Bush as a racist. I came here to say that I made mistakes and I’ve grown as a person.”

But when Today cued another clip of West interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs, he complained again. “Yo, how am I supposed to talk if you’re going to run the thing in the middle while I’m talking?…Please don’t let that happen again. It’s ridiculous.”

In this morning’s segment, Lauer defended the practice of showing old footage during interviews as standard. Watch the interview after the jump and let us know what you think: Was West right to be bothered by Lauer’s interviewing technique? READ FULL STORY »

Bruce Springsteen booked for 'Jimmy Fallon': Who should his backing band be?

Bruce-SpringsteenImage Credit: Solarpix/PR PhotosBruce Springsteen will visit Late Night With Jimmy Fallon next Tuesday night, Nov. 16, NBC has announced. The Boss is always an engaging interview subject, and with the awesome deluxe reissue of his classic 1978 album Darkness on the Edge of Town hitting stores that very day, he’ll have lots to talk about. Even better, Springsteen is planning to perform some of the rarities that are being released for the first time on that deluxe reissue and its two-disc counterpart, The Promise. But which band will he be playing with? The network won’t say.

The obvious choice would be Springsteen’s trusty E Street Band. A younger version of the same gang recorded Darkness back in the ’70s, of course, and anyone who’s seen Springsteen in concert with the E Street Band in the last few years knows that they still have an incredible on-stage rapport. This option would be a great one, no question.

But what about the Roots, who will be sitting just feet away from Springsteen on the Late Night stage in their role as house band? They’re one of the most versatile live crews in the land, capable of adapting to virtually any style required. I’m not exactly sure what the Roots would sound like playing Darkness outtakes, but as a fan of both acts I’d be very curious to find out.

Then again, maybe he’ll just be playing solo, or leading some crazy supergroup made up of members from both bands. (Dueling solos from Clarence Clemons and Tuba Gooding Jr.! Garry Tallent locked in a rhythm-section groove with ?uestlove!) At the moment there’s no official answer. So which band would you rather see backing Springsteen on Fallon? Hit the jump to vote in our poll. READ FULL STORY »
