Chris Brown apologizes for homophobic Twitter tirade, sort of: Are you convinced?

chris-brownImage Credit: Jordan Strauss/WireImage.comChris Brown has issued a statement regarding his angry Twitter exchange with former B2K member Raz-B, in which he directed a stream of homophobic insults toward the other singer. “Yesterday was an unfortunate lack in judgment sparked by public Twitter attacks from an attention seeking Raz-B,” Brown says in a statement provided by his publicist. “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and frustrated I am over what transpired publicly on Twitter.”

That’s a pretty piece of pseudo-apologetic doublespeak. Brown blames the target of his hateful outburst in the same breath as he expresses regret for “what transpired,” an evasive phrasing meant to spread the responsibility around instead of owning it himself. Sure, Raz-B was probably seeking attention when he tweeted about the true fact that Brown brutally assaulted an ex-girlfriend in 2009. But no one forced Brown to respond with those nasty gay-baiting epithets or to mock Raz-B’s past allegations of sexual abuse. He went there all by himself.

Brown’s statement continues with some slightly more direct thoughts: “I have learned over the past few years to not condone or represent acts of violence against anyone,” he writes. “Molestation and victims of such acts are not to be taken lightly; and for my comments I apologize — from the bottom of my heart. I love all of my fans, gay and straight. I have friends from all walks of life and I am committed, with God’s help, to continue becoming a better person.”

What do you think of Brown’s latest comments? Do you think he’s genuinely contrite about the obnoxious things he said, or just sorry that it happened in public view? Sound off in the comments, below.

Kanye West's gory 'Monster' video leaks, full of half-naked corpses: Amazing or appalling?

kanye-vid1The version of Kanye West‘s “Monster” video that you may have seen today is an unfinished, unsanctioned leak. The video quality is fuzzy, some of the images appear to be watermarked placeholders, and the clip is currently available only as a YouTube stream that will no doubt soon be yanked by West’s label. Even as a rough cut, though, the “Monster” clip already has the entire Internet talking and debating. After all, “Monster” is an all-star selection from the year’s best album, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the video treatment for this incredible song since August.

Does the leaked video live up to the hype? That depends on your tolerance for arty shots of dead women in various states of undress. The clip as it stands now is full of half-naked female corpses — hanging from the ceiling by their necks as Rick Ross reclines, slumping over in bed next to West, sprawled face-down on a couch behind an uncomfortable-looking Jay-Z. At one point, West stands casually holding a woman’s blood-dripping severed head in one hand.

These are intentionally ghastly images, meant to disturb. In addition to being a fantastic posse cut, “Monster” is all about ugliness. West’s chorus proclaims that “Everybody knows I’m a motherf—ing monster.” Now you can see that metaphor played out quite literally. But to what end? Images of models who look like they’ve been murdered are nothing new in the fashion world. America’s Next Top Model centered a whole episode around this morbid theme in 2007, drawing deserved criticism from feminist commentators. Jezebel.com elaborated on “The Problem With Fashion’s Obsession With Death” (link contains NSFW images) over a year ago. Glamorizing violence against women this way as we enter 2011 isn’t just potentially pretty offensive to a lot of people — it’s played out and boring. I expect better from an artist as boundlessly creative as Kanye West.

It’s no coincidence that the leaked “Monster” video’s best sequence, wherein Nicki Minaj diabolically interrogates herself, doesn’t rely on the stale dead-model motif. I only wish the rest of the video were more like Minaj’s part — unsettling and edgy, dangerous and sexy, but also original. In fairness, the video does include several other non-corpse-strewn scenes, and again, this is only an unfinished leak, so it’s possible that West’s final version will be substantially different from what’s out there now.

In the meantime, have you seen the leaked “Monster” video? What do you think of its controversial imagery?

Britney Spears to release new single, 'Hold It Against Me,' next week

Filed under: Britney Spears, Music, News and tagged:

Britney-SpearsImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comPrepare yourselves, Britney Spears fans: She’s about to release a brand-new single called “Hold It Against Me” in just over a week. Sharon Dastur, program director for NYC’s Z100 radio, has heard the new single, and she loves it.

“It’s produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, and the beat that they give her is really unique compared to other artists — this infectious bass beat beneath the song,” Dastur says in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on newsstands tomorrow. “Plus, the hook is just amazing.”

Dastur tells us that “Hold It Against Me” will premiere on Jan. 7, next Friday. It will presumably precede Spears’ seventh studio album, about which little is known aside from a March release date.

Excited yet? Spears doing her thing over an “infectious bass beat” from pop maestros Dr. Luke and Max Martin sounds pretty enticing, no? Let us know if you’re looking forward to hearing “Hold It Against Me.”

Chris Brown launches into homophobic Twitter feud with former B2K member Raz-B

Chris-Brown-Raz-BImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Koi Sojer/PR Photos Chris Brown launched into a profanity-laced Twitter feud for several hours today with former B2K member De’Mario Thornton — a.k.a. Raz-B — in which both Brown and Thornton employed homophobic slurs and taunts. The exchange began after Thornton tweeted, using the Twitter handles for, respectively, Eric Benet, Brown, Halle Berry, and Rihanna, “I’m just sittin here Thinking how can n—-s like @ebenet & @ChrisBrown disrespect women as Intelligent as @HalleBerry11 [and] @Rihanna.” Brown quickly tweeted in response, “@razb2k, n—- you want attention! Grow up n—-!!! D— in da booty a– lil boy,” and followed up with several tweets taunting Thornton over his accusations that he was molested by his ex-manager and one of his former group mates. Thornton replied by accusing Brown of being on the down-low (i.e. in the closet).

By the end, both Brown and Thornton had apologized for using homophobic slurs and appeared to have moved on to tweet another day. It was all a masterful display of debate at its finest.

Q-Tip talks 2011 plans: A multilingual new album, collaborating with Drake, and more

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , , ,

Q-tip-musicianImage Credit: Johnny Nunez/WireImage.comQ-Tip is making big plans for the coming year. The sometime A Tribe Called Quest rapper phoned the Music Mix earlier today to fill us in on all the projects he has on the way, including a new solo album recorded in English, Spanish, and French. He’s calling it The Last Zulu, and ideally he hopes to complete three separate versions of the set (one for each language).

“I feel like my fans have been so gracious over the years,” Q-Tip says. “They’re so smart that I want to extend the grace back to them and speak to them in their tongues.” One slight problem: The Abstract Poetic is fluent in neither French nor Spanish. “I’m going to have to brush up!”

He plans to start seriously focusing on The Last Zulu in February, with a tentative release target of late 2011/early 2012. Here’s hoping it doesn’t fall victim to the label shenanigans that delayed 2008′s The Renaissance for so long.

So far Q-Tip has a few rough ideas for songs and a general concept involving vintage rhythms. “It’s going to take us back to the days of when it was breakbeats, when [Grandmaster] Flash and [Afrika] Bambaataa was throwing on them hard beats. It’s going to have a lot of that energy, and it’s going to feel really big and anthemic. It’s going to be unlike anything I’ve done before.” READ FULL STORY »

Kennedy Center Honors recognize Merle Haggard, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, more: Watch here

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged: ,

kennedy-center-awardsImage Credit: John Paul Filo/ CBSThis year’s Kennedy Center Honors recipients are an illustrious bunch, including country legend Merle Haggard, Sir Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Broadway composer Jerry Herman, and choreographer Bill T. Jones. Earlier this month they gathered in the nation’s capital for a gala ceremony that aired last night on CBS.

The show included lots of A-list performances as usual. Among them were Jennifer Hudson singing a song from The Color Purple for Winfrey, No Doubt rocking “Penny Lane” for McCartney, Mavis Staples and James Taylor topping that with a “Let It Be”/”Hey Jude” double-whammy, and country heavyweights like Vince Gill, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Miranda Lambert all tipping their hats to Haggard. Other highlights were humbler in scale, like when Alec Baldwin gave McCartney a wry spoken introduction.

Check out Baldwin’s speech after the jump (note that the clip will auto-play) and let us know: Did you watch the Kennedy Center Honors on TV last night? Which were your favorite parts? READ FULL STORY »
