Coldplay sparks hope with new 'Christmas Lights' video: Watch here

coldplay-christmasColdplay has a potential Christmas classic on their hands. Today the English rock band debuted their video for “Christmas Lights.” In true Coldplay fashion, it begins as a sullen ballad about a couple breaking up but then swirls into rousingly anthemic cut. In the video the foursome plays on a small stage as if starring in a play with no audience. The show closes with an array of fireworks, signaling all lost loves to return home. It’s a great spin on the Christmas music genre–stocked with jingling bells, lyrics about Santa, and heroic tales of a red-nosed reindeer.

Check out the video after the jump and let us know what you think of Coldplay’s yuletide plea.

Grammy nominations: Five things the Recording Academy got right...and wrong

grammys-gaga-arcade-fireImage Credit: Erik Kabik/Retna Ltd; David Atlas/Retna/Retna LtdThe list of Grammy Award nominees announced last night included more than a few surprises, of both the pleasant and head-scratching varieties. Here are the Recording Academy’s five best and worst calls this year. We’ll be thinking about them as we look forward to the Feb. 13, 2011 live awards show on CBS. In the meantime, let us know what you think.

RIGHT: Arcade Fire‘s Album of the Year nod for The Suburbs was a major coup for indie rock…

WRONG: …but what were Academy voters thinking when they included quintessential singles artist Katy Perry‘s uneven Teenage Dream in the same category?

RIGHT: Bruno Mars‘ fingerprints were all over the pop charts this year, so it’s fitting that he received seven nominations…

WRONG: …but with a résumé that impressive, he should have been a lock for a Best New Artist nomination. His absence there is a strange snub.

RIGHT: The Fame Monster put pop royal Lady Gaga in contention for Album of the Year for the second year in a row…

WRONG: …but “Bad Romance,” the best song from that disc, was relegated to female pop vocal and music video categories. No Song of the Year or Record of the Year nods? Rah-rah-ridiculous!

RIGHT: The Academy recognized worthy lesser-known acts like the Black Keys and Mumford & Sons with multiple nominations…

WRONG: …but filled out the list with too many predictable choices like John Mayer, whose most recent album underwhelmed even some fans.

RIGHT: Gorillaz“Stylo” got a much-deserved spot in the music video category….

WRONG: …but the cartoon band’s only other appearance was in Best Pop Instrumental Performance, for a minute-long album intro. That’s just weird.

Jackie Evancho: Watch 'America's Got Talent' star's 'Silent Night' music video (EW exclusive First Look!)

Jackie-Evancho-Talent-videoNothing says the holidays like a tiny opera-singing prodigy! EW has the exclusive first look at 10-year-old America’s Got Talent runner-up Jackie Evancho’s music video for “Silent Night,” the latest release from her holiday album, O Holy Night, which surprised the music world by selling 239,000 copies during its first week in release and debuting at No. 2 (behind Susan Boyle’s already-released Christmas disc The Gift) back in November. The video is white-backdrop simple and features Evancho playing with (apparently fake) snow around a Christmas tree with her older brother, Jacob. “Making the video was really fun,” Evancho tells EW. “There was a lot of snow—it got in our mouths! But it was still a lot of fun, especially because Jacob was there to enjoy it with me. Usually my siblings don’t get to come along while I’m working.”

Evancho wanted to do the music video for “Silent Night” because it’s one of her favorite tunes on the album. “Actually both the English songs on the album—this and ‘O Holy Night’—are my favorite,” the pint-sized singer clarifies. “‘O Holy Night’ is a very beautiful song, and it’s my favorite Christmas song to sing. I sing it a lot around the house, and I just like that song a lot.”

Considering she made a whole album about it, Christmas—and everything that goes with it—is very important to the classical crossover singer. “We do whatever normal kid does,” Evancho says of her family’s holiday traditions. “We try to sneak a peek of Santa, we go to our Grandma’s house, have Christmas dinner, and then go to bed and wait for Santa to come.” So, what’s Evancho hoping Santa brings her this year? You might be surprised. “I want these vampire fangs,” she reveals. “I’m really into vampires. You put them in your mouth. They’re small at first, but there’s a lever, and when you push the lever with your tongue, they grow bigger.”

Boyz II Men accused of lip-syncing at live Christmas special

Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com

Boyz II Men have found themselves in a bit of controversy after their performance last night at NBC’s annual Christmas in Rockfeller Center tree-lighting special. The trio sang the holiday classic “This Christmas” without a problem. But after their set the next act, singer Charice, was introduced, and Boyz II Men’s melodies began to play again. Oops. But after watching the clip again, it appears that the only vocals that played were their background ones, which is common and doesn’t mean they lip-synced the entire way.

Also, if you listen closely during their performance, you’ll hear that their microphones are on. When Shawn Stockman claps his hands, the muffled beat on the mic is audible. So what do you think, Mixers? Did one of the most successful groups of our time try to pull the wool over our ears last night? Or did some sound guy at NBC just make a mistake? Check out the incident here and sound off in the comments.
